KEY BLOCK----- *Main Topics:* Jerome Corsi book, Russia-Georgia conflict, Rick Warren Candidate Forum Summary of Shift: The newly brokered cease fire in the Russia-Georgia conflict led the news today. In the Presidential race, there was much media anticipation of the Saddleback Church forum tomorrow with both Senators John McCain and Barack Obama. In addition to charging non-church members $500-$2,000 dollars to come see the event, Rick Warren is using the event to gain significant publicity, making appearances on virtually every network. MSNBC was the only station that aired debate surrounding the Jerome Corsi book. In other political news, Howard Dean's comment on NPR about the Republican Party being the 'white' party was mentioned on CNN. In nonpolitical news, the Olympics continues to dominate in terms of coverage. Other stories include a penguin being knighted, a tough curfew imposed on a small Arkansas town gripped by crime, an FDA report on hormones in baby formula, and a tropical storm forming in the Caribbean. Highlights: 1. Jerome Corsi coverage a. MSNBC: David Shuster discusses 'swift boating' effect on current election b. MSNBC Maddow skewers book, remarks on other inaccuracies 2. McCain overstepping his role, speaking too tough on Georgia-Russia conflict a. CNN: Cafferty speaks about McCain over playing his role in Georgia-Russia conflict b. MSNBC: Maddow talks about McCain's presumptuous foreign policy, interfering with current foreign policy, and Phil Gramm's return 3. ABC: Jake Tapper speaks to Rick Warren about the upcoming 'civil forum' 4. CBS: Bob Schieffer analyzes McCain's openness to a pro-choice running mate 5. FNC: Pfotenhauer defends McCain's commitments to the middle class, talks VP speculation Clips: *Highlight #1* *Shuster Discusses McCain's Response To Question About Jerome Corsi Book, Hypocrisy Of McCain's Silence On Smear Campaign* (MSNBC 08/15/08 7:55pm) [clip of McCain being asked about Jerome Corsi book, McCain responding] DAVID SHUSTER: Gotta keep your sense of humor? Michell? MICHELLE BERNARD: *Maybe he really didn't hear the question because there's nothing humorous about the book. I haven't read the book, I've seen what people have said about it and it appears to be a pack of lies and innuendo*. So I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he didn't properly hear the question. [...] KEN VOGEL: Well even if he did hear the question, his-McCain's response was kind of offhanded as so many of his comments are and you know he could have been saying that you know you just have to shrug off these kinds of outlandish attacks during a Presidential campaign, even still though I think he would be wise to come out a little more forcefully, either denouncing it or at least distance himself from it. *Because the Obama campaign, as that statement says, has done a really effective job of kind of demonizing both this book and this author, as representative of this type of dirty politics that both these guys are working very hard to show that they're not associated with it and they don't condone - they're both trying to present themselves as kind of reformers* [...] SHUSTER: They had an opportunity to condemn the book and they chose not to. They chose simply to focus simply on --well McCain had a hearing problem. [...] And yet, four years ago as we all know John McCain took a very strong stance against the swift boat book and the swift boat ads that were being used against John Kerry. I kinda wonder if that makes the story stick around for a little while because it becomes clear that McCain in the eyes of many is nakedly political by not condemning the book this time. VOGEL: *Perhaps, and even in this cycle he has not come out as strongly against 527s as he has in 04 when Kerry was a victim and in 2000 when there were these types of independent groups that were very aggressively out there *. [...] SHUSTER: Ken that's what I dont understand. Why is it so difficult for McCain to condemn this and say look this book is filled with inaccuracies, I didn't support it four years ago, I condmned it then, I condemn it now, let's talk about real differences in policy. VOGEL: I think he should [...] *Maddow And Kofinis Discuss Jerome Korsi Book, List Errors Mentioned in 'Unfit For Publication'* (MSNBC 08/15/08 8:40pm) RACHEL MADDOW: There's something about a hardcover book that connotes authority, sourcing, evidence, it's a symbolism imprinted in your developing brain from your first encounter with encyclopedia brown and therein lies the problem. [goes on to list errors mentioned in Obama's anti-Jerome Corsi document, Unfit for Publication] CHRIS KOFINIS: *Well when you look at Jerome Corsi this is a guy whose become a poster child for lies and smears. I mean he did in 2004 against Senator Kerry, and he's doing it again. You know I should say he should be ashamed but I'm unsure if he has a soul - evidently he sold his soul in order to get this book published*. I mean its just tragic irony here. I think the Obama campaign did a very smart thing, they didn't just say these are lies and falsehoods, they went out in excruciating detail and made it very clear all the various mistakes, falsehoods, and gross distortions in this book. It's unfortunate that this stuff gets any press attention, but it's the reality of kindof the world that we live in- this book is being pushed by the right wing as heavily as it is. RACHEL MADDOW: They learned in 2004 nobody has the luxury of ignoring these things any more. If you want to take account of their political impact [...] *Highlight #2* *Cafferty Highlights McCain's 'Overplaying His Hand Here' On Georgia Conflict* (CNN 08/15/08 6:30pm) JACK CAFFERTY: Well I think there's a risk that John McCain is going to over play his hand here. He's starting to remind me of Al Hague back when Ronald Reagan got shot, Hague raced over to the White House and quickly informed the world – 'I'm in charge here.' Well, get over yourself you're not in charge. We have a President, granted he's on vacation. *Now there's talk McCain's going to send his own emissaries to Georgia, Senators Lieberman and Graham, which will probably only serve to muddy whatever waters are over there. Not that they're not muddy enough already. I'm not so sure that he hasn't already overdone it a little bit and maybe it's time for him to back down a peg or two*. […] DAVID BRODY: Well I agree with Jack, I'll say this though: let's remember this was somewhat of a machismo moment a little bit for John McCain. You know the foreign policy, matters of war, it all really plays in very very well to what he wants to do. It's right in his wheel house. It's kind of a situation where he can't help himself to a certain degree. That's one part of it. The other part is let's remember the last time John McCain would want is to follow George Bush – they want to be out in front of this rather than the President coming out and all the sudden John McCain going yeah I agree with Bush on that. They don't want that narrative at all. *Maddow and Korb Discuss Presumptuousness of McCain, His Interjections In Foreign Policy, Influence of Gramm and Scheunemann* (MSNBC 08/15/08 8:16pm) LARRY KORB: Whenever you have a crisis, we can only have one voice in the country. We have one President at the time. And what should happen is he is the one sending the signals, sending the people around, so that this country speaks with one voice. And what's happening is McCain actually spoke before Bush did he's sending much stronger messages, almost like he's shooting from the hip- sending messages to Russia and Georgia. And it could be very dangerous if either side overreacts in this very very delicate time. RACHEL MADDOW: John McCain, thus far in this Presidential campaign, he has been delivering weekly radio addresses [...] KORB: *Well I think it is rather ironic because when he goaded Senator Obama to taking a trip over there overseas and then Senator Obama gave a speech in Berlin, he accused him of being presumptuous and acting Presidential. I'm much more concerned with what he's done now to upset American foreign policy. I think voters can decided if he's being presumptuous. But what he's doing is very dangerous for the security of this country*. [...] MADDOW: Another member of the pretend Cabinet made a surprise appearance last night. Pretend Treasury Sectary Phil Gramm. It was Gramm's first appearance with McCain since he supposedly [...] *Like Randy Scheunemann, Gramm is another lobbyist who has helped shape McCain policies that just happen to be in line with their clients. In Gramm's case, defending banks from laws that might help homeowners in the mortgage crisis, a crisis Gramm himself contributed to by deregulating banks much like he deregulated energy trading, a move even s*ome Republicans admit let speculators drive up gas prices. *Highlight #3* *Tapper Discusses Candidate Forum With Rick Warren, Religion In Election*(ABC 08/15/08 6:40pm) JAKE TAPPER: [...] Both Senator Obama and McCain are both Christians who have struggled to convey their faith in a country where faith is important and often controversial. VOICEOVER: *John McCain has not always appeared comfortable talking about his faith. McCain has also had a rocky relationship in the past with some conservative Christian leaders. And he's not doing as well in the polls with evangelicals. Barack Obama seems more comfortable talking about religion*[...] TAPPER: What does it mean when a politician explains their relationship with Jesus Christ? As a voter, what do you need to hear? RICK WARREN: Well I want to hear a person say that it's not a religion, it's a relationship. I've had a personal relationship with Christ for now almost 50 years- he's my best friend. I talk to him all the time. VOICEOVER: Warren says he wants to probe the candidate's values and vision and why they want this job. WARREN: *There's a fine line between egotism and ambition. In Psalm 72, Solemon is the wealthiest, wisest and most powerful leader in the world, and he praised for more influence and he says so that I may help the sick and the poor, defend the defenseless, care for the oppressed.* * Highlight #4* *Bob Schieffer Discusses Perils In Possible ProChoice McCain VP* (CBS 08/15/08 6:35pm) BOB SCHIEFFER: Well if John McCain was trying to run this out to sort of market test it to see how it sat with religious conservatives, I think he found today that there's not much market out there for this. Basically they just went nuts. Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, said if McCain put a prochoice person on the ticket with him he thought a lot of conservatives, especially evangelicals, would simply stay home. You also have to remember evangelicals kind of suspect John McCain-he's never been all that popular, thats not where his strength is. Remember the run in he had with Jerry Falwell in 2000. So I think if McCain was trying to see how this played, he found out today it does not play out very well with a very large part of the Republican base. *Highlight #5* *McCain Policy Adviser Defends McCain's Commitments To The Middle Class*(FNC 08/15/08 5:10pm) NANCY PFOTENHAUER: Well usually Heather they leave out the important parts of our proposal. First of all, We keep taxes at the low rate that they are right now because the last thing you wanna do right now is raise taxes in an economic downturn. It's really a recipe for recession. We also double the dependent deduction so that the American families who have children- that's a pretty big deal. That's taking it from 3,500 to 7,000 dollars per dependent. And we offer families a 5,000 dollar refundable tax credit to purchase health insurance. That's 2,500 dollars for individuals. They usually leave out those two pieces when they try to claim we don't do anything for the middle class. But the most important thing we can do for economic growth in general, job creation and that's what Senator John McCain's plan will do. HEATHE NAUERT: […] How do you compete when Barack Obama has a whole lot of money and you guys are limited? PFOTEHNHAUER: Well Heather we're going to have enough to prosecute this campaign. It's going to be a very tight race. The polls are already tied right now. Keep in mind Senator Obama dramatically outraised Hillary Clinton and then lost like 6 of the 9 last primaries. The person with the most money doesn't necessarily win. And certainly Senator McCain has beaten folks before who had much bigger war chests like maybe Governor Romney, ha. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the "big campaign" group.
