The purpose of the series is to create a well-connected interdisciplinary community of common purpose by facilitating a regular forum for discussion around public policy and political strategy. Maureen White, Gail Furman and I ran a series like this for 2 years in advance of 2008 and it proved to be incredibly popular and quite productive. We will hit a variety of topics over the course of the next 18 months – and will do so through the breakfasts as well as through other forum like book parties, salon dinners, and private movie screenings. We have a great host committee funding the series (if you scroll down to my initial email to you, you will see the list). We also have a great group of leaders in our “kitchen cabinet” advising us on topics and speakers and invitees (Michael Waldman, Cecile Richards, Rev. Dr. Katherine Henderson and several others). I am writing on behalf of David desJardins, Gail Furman, Anne Hess and Craig Kaplan, Larry Hui, Christal Jackson, Sarah and Victor Kovner, Rebecca Mai and David Mitnick, Keith Mestrich, Morris and Barbara Pearl, Great Neck Richman, Vin Roberti, Paul Rudd, Claire Silberman, and Lisa Steglich to invite you to speak at the Kick-Off of the (NEW) New York Breakfast Series sometime in the next few weeks – we can schedule at your convenience. This series marks the return of an incredibly successful effort that Gail Furman and Maureen White and I ran from 2006-2009, engaging and connecting New York influencers in advance of the 2008 presidential race. That series included a monthly breakfast as well as salon dinners, book discussions, and private movie screenings. Notable gatherings from the last series included: a dinner with President Clinton the evening he returned from negotiating the release of the North Korean hostages; a breakfast with Gen. Paul Eaton, Gen. Rick Sanchez, and Gen. Wesley Clark around torture and national security; and a series of strategic electorally-oriented discussions with top organization leaders including: Cecile Richards (Planned Parenthood), David Brock (Media Matters), and Greg Speed (America Votes). This new Series promises to be equally engaging, and we are certain it will become a pivotal hub for discussion and engagement leading up to 2016. As with the last Series, a monthly breakfast will serve as the anchor gathering for the event, which will also include small dinners, book receptions, and private screenings. We were lucky enough to have John Podesta speak at a breakfast during the last series. I have contacted his office as well (and have cced Eryn Sepp above). I was thinking it would be wonderful if you all could speak together at this first breakfast – or, if John is not available, perhaps we could pair you with Michael Waldman from the Brennan Center. Your participation would be such a wonderful way to launch this new effort. An important note, the host committee members fervently hope the series will provide an opportunity for the various elements of our political coalition to come together towards the larger goal we all share. Your participation at this first breakfast will be a wonderful way to set the stage for unified engagement and activity. Can you please let me know soon if you will be able to join us?
