Date: Sat, 27 Nov 2010 18:53:47 +0000 Dear Jeff, Before 6am this morning, of a TG weekend, I was awakened out of a deep sleep to a most upsetting phone call between you and Al :-( The nature of the call was exceptionally upsetting to me, and of course, to Al. I must tell you that I have personally read all the McIver transcripts and sat in on many of the lawyer conferences, discovery process, and sworn depositions with Al and other witnesses, about this most egregious case of slander and libel that they (the lawyers) had seen in all their 30 years of lawyering, and this was a high class LA law firm. I was horrified that such libels could be perpetrated for years in the secretive way they were and the level of sickness and pure evil that could emminate from one pathetic person and his little group. He knew quite well how to get others to propagate his lies. In one letter we got in the discovery process, McIver and his group openly discussed among themselves, "What fat, hairy lie can we make up about Seckel today," (!!) and cackled together at the tremendous damage they were causing Al :-( And so it went on, with literally thousands of letters going out over 20 years, the use of the net, etc. In the end, Tom McIver agreed to pay all Al's lawyer fees and substantial compensation (Al is not allowed to release the amount he got), and McIver is to cease and desist from all communications ever again about Al Seckel in any form whatsoever. He was enjoined from opening his mouth again in any forum, or starting up his lies again, because if he did, he would go to jail. The case did not actually go to trial per se because Al's lawyers said it would close McIver down EFTA00751437 immediately and be less immediately expensive to us (We really had no more funds to pursue a court route as it would have 'ruined us' before we could get the fees back! :-O. The trauma to Al was very intense during this whole period as we saw through discovery, the extent of damage and sheer volumes of lies and forged documentation that this man had spread over the years, through friends, colleagues, associates, and family, and still seem to float around even today, and continue to cause damage to his reputation and hard earned work. Al won such a settlement against McIver because he had an overwhelming preponderance of evidence that totally backed his claims and completely denied Mcliver's... We demonstrated how McIver actually forged letters in the names of Al's professors and mentors, and then, sent them around, including all over Caltech. It was that bad! McIver's lawyers and McIver asked to settle (rather than go to trial). In regard to the matter of Cal Tech, and the implication that Al lied/s about his academic credentials, that is truly outrageous. I personally know from Dr. Christof Koch himself and others, backed up by their own sworn depositions in the McGiver case, that Al was a true "Research Fellow" in the lab of Dr. Koch and Dr Shin Shimojo. To be given such a fellowship, Al had to go through a battery of interviews and pass faculty department review. "Janitors" do not pass such reviews, nor remotely get to apply! This kind of description of Al as getting what any janitor could get at Cal Tech is insulting and frankly just plain false. It saddens me to realize that the Registrar's office at Cal Tech now itself needs to get Dr. Koch's sworn legal deposition about Al and literally place it in the top of his file, together with the legal ending of the McIver trial in which McIver is enjoined legally from uttering one more word about Al or he will go to jail. It's really very problematic as Al is not supposed to discuss the case in any venue either or show any internal documentation connected to the case - but it seems he must do so forthwith in order that random checks at Cal Tech Registration, such as the one you EFTA00751438 appear to have engendered, do not end up perpetrating academic lies that are themselves FALSE. :-( Al has been a tireless supporter on your side - believe me he has!
