If you're in "basic," previous messages are copied to your reply only if you check an "include" box; but that box shows up inconsistently, depending on the address you're replying to. In any case, you need to be in standard & not basic. Just above the copyright line, click "Gmail view: standard," & that should switch you from basic into standard; in standard, prcv messages texts are included automatically.
