Service Corps. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group: The U.S. Public Interest Research Group is a network of independent state-based organizations working for social change throughout the United States. Since 1972, the PIRG network has worked for social justices, a fair and sustainable economy, a healthy environment, clean energy, greater personal freedom and a more democratic society. Our goal is to sustain a strong public interest movement by recruiting and training the next generation of organizers and leaders on college campuses. The U.S. PIRG runs the largest and oldest campus-based civic engagement program in the country. Our professional staff teaches college students to engage their communities around pressing environmental and consumer issues. Last year we hired 2,300 interns who then mobilized 11,000 volunteers nationally to educate 350,000 people in their campus communities. AmeriCorps Energy Service Corps Program Energy Service Corps is a joint project of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (USPIRG) Education Fund and AmeriCorps that works to improve energy efficiency in Colorado, New Jersey, Wisconsin and California. The project will run from 2010 to 2014, and may renew beyond the current commitment. We are additionally looking to replicate this model in other states. The nine-month program will employ 19 full-time college graduates and 235 part-time college interns who are smart, service oriented and driven to make a difference. Full-time AmeriCorps volunteers are overseen by experienced in-state lead organizers and receive comprehensive hands-on training on social change strategies and tactics including coalition building, grassroots organizing, media work, research and staff management. AmeriCorps volunteers are given significant responsibility, a demanding workload and are expected to get results. The AmeriCorps Energy Service Corps Program will make significant immediate impacts on energy efficiency through community service projects organized at 36 college campuses as well as instilling long-term attitude shifts through community education. AmeriCorps volunteers will conduct 5,500 educational home energy assessment surveys for college students and community members to highlight their home energy use and opportunities to decrease this use through behavioral changes and participation in local weatherization programs and educate more than 30,000 K-12 and college students in classrooms about the importance of environmental stewardship. Job Description The Energy Service Corps Program Director will oversee the execution of the AmeriCorps Energy Service Corps in Colorado, New Jersey, Wisconsin and California. The program director will develop and manage AmeriCorps volunteers and represent the program externally to the media, members of the service community, donors and to the Corporation for National and Community Service. The program director reports to the Student PIRGs’ National Political Director, and oversees four state lead organizers, who in turn oversee 254 AmeriCorps members. Responsibilities: Develop the skills and Leadership Potential of AmeriCorps Volunteers * Directly oversee four lead organizers, who, in turn provide training and oversight for 19 full-time AmeriCorps volunteers and 235 part-time AmeriCorps volunteers. * Participate in recruitment of AmeriCorps Volunteers, including message development, interviewing, and hiring decisions. * Manage AmeriCorps Program classroom trainings (August and January). Work with U.S. PIRG staff to plan content, secure trainers and manage logistics. * Upgrade trainings. Review Program Curriculum and methodology to analyze the quality of classroom training, and the improvement of individual and class skills. * Meet with AmeriCorps volunteers to facilitate development of career goals post-program.
