Dear Ms. Jilek,
Thank you for your e-mail and the information about your Institute and AJ.
This would be a terrific summer for AJ to intern at The Institute for Music & Brain Science -
we will have about a half-dozen graduate, undergraduate, and graduating high school students
working on various projects, including literature research and reviews for my upcoming book,
"The Cognitive Neuroscience of Music, 2nd Edition" (Oxford Univ Press) - a nice fit, given
AJs interest and current educational level. What grade is he currently in? WHat is his
surname?
The Harvard and MIT Student Affairs Offices and Harvard Real Estate Office may be able to
assist AJ and you re: summer housing in Boston. Alternatively, there should be plenty of
Boston and Cambridge sublets listed in MLS and elsewhere, as many BU, Northeastern, Harvard,
MIT, Emmanuel, and other colleges' students live off-campus during the school year and vacate
for the summer.
Please feel free to give AJ my email address - or he can just click on "EMail the Director"
on The Institute's website.
What an interesting non-profit you run! Will you be at the International Mind, Brain, &
Education Society meeting in Philly in May? Hopefully, I will get a chance to meet you and
continue collabrating on summer internships for college and high school students in years to
come.
Sincerely,
Mark

Subject: Internship Inquiry
Dr. Tramo:
I wanted to introduce myself as the Executive Director of the Pinhead Institute, a
Smithsonian Affiliate located in Telluride, Colorado (USA). We are an organization based in
Telluride that strives to promote science-education both locally and globally. An
international network of the world's leading scientists support our many educational programs
providing unparalleled opportunity to high-level scientific education in rural Colorado.

I am reaching out to you regarding our esteemed Pinhead Institute Internship Program. I was
wondering if you or any of your colleagues might accept a High School student to work with
you this summer. I have an amazing student this year that is looking for experiences such as
those you might be able to provide. I wanted to touch base first to see if you do accept
younger students before having us contact you directly with our student's "Letter of
Interest" and resume for your perusal.
I have a student this year who is extremely interested in acoustics and understanding more
about the connection between music and the brain. I was thrilled to come across your
research at the "Institute for Music & Brain Science" & hope there may be opportunities for
young students with your group. Our student, AJ, is a very bright, personable, and hard
working student. AJ has been studying music since he was very young, but is also a young man
who is tremendously interested in science. He is looking for an experience this summer where
he can mesh these two interests. He is extremely enthusiastic about learning & is a reliable
worker who has volunteered with Pinhead for the past two summers. Might you have any ideas
for someone/someplace that I could contact in finding internship opportunities for this young
man? Our student is looking to spend roughly 6-10 weeks working anywhere from late June
through early August 2009 if possible.
Just to provide you with a little background on our program, our student interns typically
work with mentors and their assistants on various projects during the course of their
internship. Our students are great resources for attending to those projects that stay in the
to-do pile but get perpetually shoved back to the bottom of the pile. The students do not
necessarily expect interesting work, just inspiring surroundings. They know that they must be
self-motivated and self-starting to do unstructured internships. Our ultimate hope in the
internship program is that the experience opens the world of science to these young adults
and they will chose a career geared in the sciences. Perhaps not so ambitious, but equally
important, we hope that they learn to appreciate and understand their natural world to a
greater extent.
Please let me know if your organization might be interested in working with a Pinhead
student. The students selected for our program this year have gone through a rigorous
selection process and I can assure you that anyone associated with your program would be
proud to work with any of them. Our students are also provided with a $1500 scholarship to
fund their internship each summer. This scholarship funding should cover the costs of their
housing, travel, and living expenses over the course of their internship. This way, your
only expense should be one of time in mentoring our student over the summer.
I am happy to speak to you about our Internship Program, our students, or any other questions
or concerns you may have at any time...please don't hesitate to contact me. So far this
year, I am placing students at the Smithsonian National Zoo, the Andes to Amazon Research
Program (Peru), the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, and the California Academy of
Sciences. Hopefully this shows the caliber of our collaborations.

Thank you for your consideration, I think the opportunities a you could provide our student
would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our rural youth.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Best.
