by Eric Bradner
Welcome to CNN Politics Nightcap and good Tuesday night from Washington -- the city -- not the state, which is holding its Republican presidential primary today. Bernie Sanders backed away from his warning of a "messy" convention, even as he challenged Kentucky's primary results. Your bartender is Eric Bradner (http://www.cnn.com/profiles/eric-bradner?cid=nl_pol_071915_profile?sr=nl_pol_072215_bradner) . The tip jar: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .
** Harry Reid's unity play: 'Lay off' Sanders
------------------------------------------------------------
One influential Democrat not concerned about escalating tensions as Bernie Sanders carries his fight against Hillary Clinton through California's June 7 primary: Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid. He dismissed a question about Sanders' "tenuous loyalty" to the party, saying, "I think we should just kind of lay off Bernie Sanders a little bit," and he called the Vermont senator a "good person." Could Reid be the Democratic uniter? CNN's Stephen Collinson writes that the party needs one (http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/24/politics/bernie-sanders-hillary-clinton-democrats/index.html) .
A little help for their friends: Reid suggested Sanders will play a role helping Democrats reclaim the Senate. "I received a phone call today from Russ Feingold," the Wisconsin Democratic Senate hopeful, Reid said. "I’m very happy that Sen. Sanders is supporting him fully, big time. That’s great."
Not so "messy" after all? Sanders eased away from his declaration that the Democratic convention could be "messy," making clear that doesn't mean violent. "The context of that was that democracy is messy, that people will have vigorous debate on the issues," he said on NBC's "Today." More from CNN's Eugene Scott (http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/24/politics/bernie-sanders-jeff-weaver-messy/) .
Why is Clinton disliked? "Clinton’s unpopularity is akin to the unpopularity of a workaholic," posits The New York Times' David Brooks (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/24/opinion/why-is-clinton-disliked.html?_r=1&mtrref=undefined&gwh=70032CEC5EF293AA33B9380F7F6E59AF&gwt=pay&assetType=opinion) . He suggests voters demand "a real person instead of just a productive one."
** Sanders' Kentucky decision: Why not?
------------------------------------------------------------
Bernie Sanders' campaign says it doesn't have reason to believe Kentucky's votes were miscounted -- but it wants a recount all the same. Sanders met the deadline Tuesday to request a recanvass of every voting machine (http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/24/politics/bernie-sanders-kentucky-re-canvass/index.html) in the state to verify Hillary Clinton's nail-biter victory.
Where things stand: Clinton's lead was by 1,923 votes, according to the Kentucky secretary of state's office -- with 46.8% of the vote to Sanders' 46.3%. Clinton won 28 delegates to Sanders' 27. Because the race was so close, Sanders' request will be granted automatically.
The best-case scenario for Sanders: One more delegate. Why does he care about a single delegate? The Washington Post's Philip Bump has some thoughts (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/05/24/why-bernie-sanders-keeps-playing-small-ball-on-delegates/?tid=pm_politics_pop_b) .
** McAuliffe probe highlights Clinton ties
------------------------------------------------------------
The revelation that Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is facing a federal investigation related to campaign donations could complicate Hillary Clinton's effort to win the crucial swing state and its 13 electoral votes in November, writes CNN's Ryan Nobles (http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/24/politics/terry-mcauliffe-hillary-clinton-2016/index.html) .
There are extensive ties between the McAuliffe campaign of 2013 and the Clinton campaign of 2016. To start: Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook ran McAuliffe's successful campaign for governor. The attorney representing McAuliffe in this matter, Mark Elias, is also an attorney for the Clinton campaign.
Straight Up
** "Disney pays its workers wages that are so low that they are forced to live in motels."
------------------------------------------------------------
**
-- Bernie Sanders at a Tuesday rally. Sanders was campaigning in Anaheim -- right by Disneyland, a huge employer there. He bashed Disney as an example of corporate greed.

Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis, the legendary civil rights leader, marked an anniversary with this mugshot (https://twitter.com/repjohnlewis/status/735101117223297026) that has more than 11,000 retweets.
Last Call
** Changing the GOP platform just got harder
------------------------------------------------------------
The Republican National Committee moved to make sure Donald Trump doesn't back off his pledge to keep the party's platform as is, with chairman Reince Priebus appointing three conservative stalwarts -- Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin and North Carolina Rep. Virginia Foxx -- to lead its platform committee. CNN's Tom LoBianco looks at what it means (http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/24/politics/republican-national-committee-platform-convention/index.html) .
About Trump's bogus "very fishy" claim: CNN's Jake Tapper took apart Trump's (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-escalates-attack-on-bill-clinton/2016/05/23/ed109acc-2100-11e6-8690-f14ca9de2972_story.html) "outrageous and long-ago-debunked falsehood" about former Bill Clinton aide Vincent Foster's suicide, calling it a "pro-truth position." Watch it here (https://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/735201612541485056) .
** California dreaming: Sanders back on TV
------------------------------------------------------------
Bernie Sanders went up with a $1.5 million ad buy in California Tuesday with a new 30-second spot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imHJDF9OEZ8) that's a greatest-hits reel of his policy proposals: Free college tuition, campaign-finance reform and Wall Street reform. “California, it’s a long way to Washington, but you can send them a message they can’t ignore,” he says in the ad.
But $1.5 million is nothing there. California is a massively expensive state, and it takes $5 million a week to penetrate at all there, ad strategists tell CNN's Jeff Zeleny. The amount reflects a cash crunch for a candidate with a record-shattering online fundraising operation. (This is his second spot in the Golden State. His first, in April, was "$27 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nJhuVBXlXk) " -- the amount of his average donation.)
Not on the air at all in California: Hillary Clinton.
No more debates. That was last night's news as Clinton rejected Fox News' proposal (http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/23/politics/hillary-clinton-bernie-sanders-fox-debate-california/index.html) to host a final bout in California. Sanders had said he was in.
** John Hickenlooper and how to overshare
------------------------------------------------------------
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper didn't hold anything back in his new memoir, "The Opposite of Woe: My Life in Beer and Politics (http://www.amazon.com/Opposite-Woe-Life-Beer-Politics/dp/1101981679) ." Just check out this paragraph from The Denver Post's John Frank (http://www.denverpost.com/2016/05/23/colorado-governor-john-hickenlooper-reveals-his-secrets-in-a-new-book-that-puts-him-in-national-political-spotlight/) : "Hickenlooper recounts the first time he smoked pot at age 16. And his attempt to grow marijuana outside his bedroom window in suburban Pennsylvania. His love-sick depression as a freshman at Wesleyan University and the lithium capsules he needed to survive final exams. And the time in college he ‘got a little high’ and took a nude self-portrait in a bathtub."
Speaking of oversharing: "Weiner might well be the most mortifying movie ever made," writes Vanity Fair's Bruce Handy (http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/05/anthony-weiner-psychologists) of the documentary about Anthony Weiner and wife (and Hillary Clinton aide) Huma Abedin.
** VA head apologizes for Disney comparison
------------------------------------------------------------
From CNN's Tom LoBianco (http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/24/politics/bob-mcdonald-veterans-affairs-disney/index.html) : Veterans Affairs Secretary Bob McDonald apologized for comparing long waits at VA hospitals to the lines at Disney amusement parks, amid calls from top Republicans for him to resign because of the remark. "It was never my intention to suggest that I don't take our mission of serving veterans very seriously," he said.
What got McDonald in trouble: Saying at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast: "When you go to Disney, do they measure the number of hours you wait in line? Or what's important? What's important is your satisfaction with the experience."
http://www.cnn.com/specials/politics/cnn-politics-data-app/index.html
Tipsy
That's what's at stake in Washington's Republican primary -- a by-mail contest that closes at 11 p.m. ET. Of those, 14 are statewide delegates divided proportionally, and the rest of three apiece to the winner of each of Washington's 10 congressional districts. Per CNN's count, Donald Trump is still 47 delegates shy of clinching the GOP nomination, so he can't do that tonight. The only real question: Will Trump fail to get all -- or almost all -- of the delegates? Ted Cruz, John Kasich and Ben Carson were still technically on the ballots there.
Closing Time
House Speaker Paul Ryan is clamping down (http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/house/281077-house-gop-seeks-to-avoid-more-unexpected-floor-fights) on Democrats' ability to surprise the GOP with politically-charged amendments. ... Rush Limbaugh is still suffering (http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/05/is-rush-limbaugh-in-trouble-talk-radio-213914) for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut," four years later. ... Donald Trump's claim of raising $6 million for veterans' groups looks overblown (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/05/24/what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-about-the-money-donald-trump-raised-for-veterans/?hpid=hp_rhp-top-table-main_trump-vets-305pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory) , but he's funneled at least $3.1 million their way.
