http://www.pgpf.org/askforaplan?utm_source=CNN&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=LetsTalk&utm_campaign=AFAP April 25, 2016 by Chris Moody Welcome to the CNN Politics Nightcap, and good Monday evening from Washington. Ted Cruz and John Kasich are joining forces to try to keep Donald Trump from securing the delegates he needs to clinch the nomination on the first ballot, a move Trump finds "Sad!" Meanwhile, Rust Belt voters are sounding off on the election while East Coasters gear up to vote. Your bartender is Chris Moody (http://www.cnn.com/profiles/chris-moody) , filling in for Eric Bradner. The tip jar: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) . ** Cruz and Kasich tag team Trump ------------------------------------------------------------ Now that it is statistically impossible for John Kasich and Ted Cruz to win the Republican presidential nomination on the first ballot at the party convention in Cleveland, the two rivals are briefly putting aside their differences to keep Donald Trump from clinching the nomination. The duo announced the new strategy in statements timed together late Sunday night. Cruz will focus his energy on holding Trump down in Indiana while Kasich takes him from the western flank in Oregon and New Mexico. CNN's Stephen Collinson and Tal Kopan have more (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/25/politics/ted-cruz-john-kasich-divide-map-strategy-donald-trump?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) : "Ted Cruz and John Kasich are sudden allies -- but they're not friends. The Texas senator and Ohio governor roiled the Republican presidential primary late Sunday with a coordinated effort to deny Donald Trump the nomination by dividing upcoming contests." Trump, who is still working on a catchy Trump Nickname™ for Kasich, roared back after the announcement that it was a sign of his competitors' desperation. “Wow, just announced that Lyin' Ted and Kasich are going to collude in order to keep me from getting the Republican nomination,” Trump tweeted. “DESPERATION!” Republicans who oppose Trump feel confident that they’ll be able to outwork the real estate mogul if voting goes past a first ballot at the convention, so this strategy is key to ensuring he’s forced into a floor fight. ** Front-runners on both sides looking for a big primary night Tuesday ------------------------------------------------------------ Five Northeastern states will hold primaries Tuesday, which is expected to benefit front-runners Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Voters from Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island — states along the so-called “Acela Corridor” —will cast their ballots. CNN’s Tom LoBianco reports (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/24/politics/republican-party-acela-primary?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) : “The opportunity provides front-runners Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton a chance to extend their dominance, while their challengers hope to keep them mired in a grueling nominating fight. Both Clinton and Trump looked strong heading into Pennsylvania's contest, according to the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist Poll. Trump leads the Republican field among likely Republican voters with 45% support compared to Ted Cruz's 27% and John Kasich's 24%. And Clinton is beating Bernie Sanders 55%-40% among likely Democratic voters." http://www.pgpf.org/askforaplan?utm_source=CNN&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=LetsTalk&utm_campaign=AFAP Buzzing Trump not inspiring the youth of America (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/25/politics/donald-trump-young-voters?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) : A Harvard University Institute of Politics survey found that 61% of likely voters age 18-29 say they would vote for Clinton, while just 25% would support Trump. Last Call ** The American Rust Belt sounds off on 2016 ------------------------------------------------------------ CNN Politics sent reporter MJ Lee to cities across the Rust Belt to hear from voters from both parties that are often overlooked in the political process. She found this election cycle might be resetting the traditional lines of what we usually take for granted as “red” and “blue” states. Lee reports (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/25/politics/rust-belt-voters-trump-clinton-sanders?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) : "In both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, these voters see a potential for change they haven't felt in generations. They say they are willing to shed party allegiances and reimagine their priorities this year, even voting for a self-described democratic socialist, or for a flame-throwing real estate developer who has never served in government. In doing so, they have become the engine of one of the most extraordinary elections in modern U.S. history." ** Millionaire Clinton goes after billionaire Trump for living large ------------------------------------------------------------ Embedded on the campaign trail with Hillary Clinton, CNN’s Dan Merica noticed she's using a new attack line against Trump (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/25/politics/hillary-clinton-donald-trump?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) : "Hillary Clinton cast Donald Trump as out of touch with the United States while campaigning Monday in Delaware, arguing that the Republican front-runner flies into states, gives speeches and then returns to the lap of luxury without listening to voters' problems. 'Donald Trump says wages are too high in America' and doesn't support raising the minimum wage and I have said, 'Come out of those towers named for yourself and actually talk and listen to people,' Clinton said. 'At some point, if you want to be president of the United States, you have to get familiar with the United States, you have to spend time with Americans of all sorts and backgrounds in every part of our country.'" Er, if you live in glass mansions … Here's more from Merica: "Casting Trump as out of touch is new and opens up Clinton -- who regularly travels via private jet and has multiple homes -- to criticism for her own lifestyle. She and husband Bill Clinton own sizable homes in Chappaqua, New York, and Washington, as well as a Manhattan apartment. They also use an apartment in Little Rock that is owned by Bill Clinton's presidential library." ** Prepare for a Veepstakes like no other ------------------------------------------------------------ In a normal presidential election year -- it feels so quaint to say that, doesn’t it? -- the parties would be at or near the point at which they start to rally around their candidate, and speculation would begin to mount about vice presidential candidates. But because of the chaos on the Republican side this cycle, all three of the remaining contenders might be bringing possible VPs to the convention. The shortened timeline, Chris Cillizza of The Washington Post notes (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/04/25/why-the-2016-veepstakes-could-be-the-most-chaotic-in-decades/) , “virtually ensures a less-than-fully-vetted candidate as his vice presidential pick, a prospect sure to make an already-skittish GOP establishment even more concerned about the prospect of Trump as the party's nominee. And, in truth, Kasich and Cruz and their staffs will struggle to give the vetting process the full attention that it needs given that the duo is in the midst of coordinating in the final five weeks of the campaign to keep the nomination from Trump.” On that note, Cruz already has former rival presidential candidate Carly Fiorina on his shortlist, CNN's Teddy Schleifer reports (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/25/politics/ted-cruz-vice-president-carly-fiorina?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) : "Ted Cruz's campaign is 'narrowing' its list of potential vice-presidential choices and it includes Carly Fiorina, an indication that the campaign could choose a running mate while he continues to battle for the GOP nomination. The Texas senator is considering naming Fiorina, a prominent surrogate and a former GOP White House rival, as his running mate, a Cruz campaign adviser confirmed Monday." On the other side of the aisle, one prominent Democrat, Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, is already saying he's not interested in the VP slot, CNN's Manu Raju and Theodore Schleifer report (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/25/politics/sherrod-brown-hillary-clinton-vice-president?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) . Straight Up ** "A Trump nomination would be a disaster for the country. I think a Cruz nomination would merely be a fiasco for the Republican Party." ------------------------------------------------------------ ** -- Veteran GOP strategist Mike Murphy on the Axe Files podcast (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/25/politics/axelrod-axe-files-mike-murphy-jeb-bush?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) . ------------------------------------------------------------ Tipsy Trump held a rally Monday at the same venue as an alpaca show. CNN reporter Ashley Killough tweeted a photo (https://twitter.com/KilloughCNN/status/723261846627688449) of the animals and the Internet -- represented this time by @RicochetEJHill (https://twitter.com/RicochetEJHill/status/723267990980976641) -- gave it this upgrade. Closing Time Trump continues to beef up his staff (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/25/politics/donald-trump-chris-christie-ken-mckay?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG ) with campaign veterans ... President Barack Obama discussed (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/23/politics/obama-london-town-hall?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) LGBT rights and Black Lives Matter in London ... Rapper Lil B is spreading the Bernie Sanders gospel (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/25/politics/lil-yachty-gets-political?sr=nl_pol_DATE_SLUG) around the hip-hop community. It's been a pleasure filling in, folks. Your regular bartender, Eric Bradner, will return to CNN Politics Nightcap on Tuesday.
