FNC: Barney Frank responds after being called a coward by Bill O'Reilly BARNEY FRANK: "Your stupidity gets in the way of rational discussion." Clips: Highlight #1 *Pfotenhauer: To Avoid Being Vague, Palin Should Be Clear *(MSNBC 10/02/10 11:33am) TAMRON HALL: We saw at the convention, she was able to . . . talk about her life as a hockey mom. And that worked in that setting . . . I want to talk to you about the substantive, having a command of the facts I'm going to play a little of that Katie Couric interview . . . let's play when she was asked about Supreme Court decisions she did not agree with. [ . . . ] HALL: . . . we know how hindsight feels, you think to yourself, why didn't I saw this, I could've said that . . . how do you avoid that? How do you prove she has a command of the facts? A knowledge of where Sen. McCain . . . stands. PFOTENHAUER: Knowing Sen. McCain's policies . . . is very different from, frankly, several gotcha questions . . . unless you're a Washington attorney, it's difficult to roll Supreme Court decisions trippingly off the tongue . . . HALL: What about the question about what papers she reads? . . . she was also asked in that same series of interviews about what papers that she would read . . . and she did not give a specific paper . . . what I'm talking about is: can she be vague? PFOTENHAUER: I think she's at her best when she's clear about, she's clear about who she is and describing the path that needs to be followed moving forward. And frankly, clear about the distinctions between the Obama path and John McCain's path . . . I think that the stronger and more clearer she is, the more persuasive she will be to the American people. Highlight #2 *Holtz-Eakin Accuses CBS of Editing Interviews Against Palin *(MSNBC 10/02/10 7:43pm) CHRIS MATTHEWS: What's it about tonight . . . ? DOUGLAS HOLTZ-EAKIN: It's about knowledge of the middle class, connecting a real middle class experience, which is hers . . . versus the artificial, arugula style middle class . . . [ . . . ] MATTHEWS: I love the new slurs when they arrive, what is an arugula middle class? HOLTZ-EAKIN: It's a not very real middle class . . . MATTHEWS: . . . is this the cultural issue that you guys are going to raise tonight? That she's one of "us" and he's not. HOLTZ-EAKIN: This is about literally connecting with the pressing problems facing America. MATTHEWS: Do you think these informational questions that Katie Couric's been asking have been fair? . . . HOLTZ-EAKIN: Every question is fair . . . [ . . . ] MATTHEWS: Are the answers she gave good ones? HOLTZ-EAKIN: She gave, out of two hours of interviews, some questions and answers that may not have been the best . . . [ . . . ] MATTHEWS: Are you saying that CBS deliberately edited out the good answers? HOLTZ-EAKIN: We believe that there were excellent answers throughout those two hours that could've been put on TV . . . [ . . . ] MATTHEWS: . . . unemployment has risen under the Republicans. HOLTZ-EAKIN: We have seen unemployment go up recently . . . MATTHEWS: What's wrong with the old Ronald Reagan question: Are you better off than you were four years ago? . . . HOLTZ-EAKIN: Because they're not running against George Bush . . . Highlight #3 *Joe Lieberman Dodges Question on Palin's Intelligence, Says Debate Opportunity to Get Away from Gotcha-Final Exam Questions* (CNN 10/02/08 1:40pm) JOE LIEBERMAN: "Tonight's a real opportunity for Sarah Palin to get this discussion away from the gotcha sorta final exam kinda questions she's been asked, and to the qualities that led John McCain to select her. [...] She's a typical, middle class person from a typical, middle class family. [...]" [...] KIRA PHILLIPS: "[...] But is she smarter than Joe Biden? [...]" LIEBERMAN: "This is not an IQ test. She's plenty smart, and Joe Biden is plenty smart. [...] I'm not here to say anything negative about him. I'm here to say that Sarah Palin is ready to be vice president based on her record. [...]" PHILLIPS: "[...] Is she smarter than Joe Biden? You know Joe Biden., and she's going for the vice presidential position? You don't think that's important? [...]" LIEBERMAN: "They're both plenty smart enough to do this job. The question is, what does Sarah Palin bring to national office? She brings executive experience. She brings the heart and head and voice of middle class America, and she'll be their advocate in exactly the areas that John McCain wants her to work in, in energy independence in reform of our government [...] Highlight #4 *Andrea Mitchell: Palin's Been Dragging the Campaign Down but she Used the Debate to Stop the Bleeding *(MSNBC 10/02/10 10:58pm) ANDREA MITCHELL: She was really becoming a drag on this ticket . . . she stopped that bleeding. Now it gets back to the larger issue, which is not a good issue for John McCain. But next week in his next debate [Obama] will have a chance to really address that head on and see whether McCain can frame the economic questions to the advantage of his candidacy because she is no longer as big a problem as she was beginning to become . . . tonight she had answers, they weren't the questions that the moderator asked but she had rehearsed, clearly coached answers and on style points, she may have done herself a lot of good. Highlight #5 *Thompson: We Have Too Much Experience In DC, Palin Brings Something New to the Table *(MSNBC 10/02/08 2:33pm) CHUCK TODD: Responding to something David Brooks wrote in the *New York Times *. . . "if you wanted someone to destroy a corrupt establishment, she'd be your woman. But the constructive act of governance is another matter. She has not been enaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness." . . . FRED THOMPSON: . . . there's more to qualifications than experience and he says prudence that comes from experience. And described the typical guy . . . who's been inside the Washington beltway and usually been in Congress for 20 or 30 or 40 years. And I said, what has that brought us? If there's any time in American history we ought to realize, those with the highest intellects and those with the most knowledge . . . we're not being served very well by them. All that experience needs to be leavened a little bit with other qualifications I think are more important nowadays than ever before . . . [ . . . ] TODD: . . . one thing that Governor Palin brings to the ticket is her experience dealing with energy issues. Do you feel like the McCain campaign hasn't highlighted this enough? That she hasn't been used to talk about energy? We havn't seen her in front of a nuclear power plant, we haven't seen her talk about offshore oil drilling . . . THOMPSON: Yeah, I think that's probably right. But there's going to be plenty of time to deal with that . . . Highlight #6 *Halcro on Palin: "This is about Populism . . . She has a Tremendous Gift for Broad Brush Strokes, Glittering Generalities" *(CNN 10/02/08 3:45) ANDREW HALCRO: "I think you have to realize, the debate you're looking at, the clips you're showing where's she's very decisive, those were sound bytes that were crafted after nine months on the McCain campaign trail. Those were issues that had basically been hashed a rehashed, from January through when that debate happened; end of October. In defense of Governor Palin, it's dramatically different to be on the campaign trail talking about the natural gas pipeline, or her position on pro-life over a nine month period and being thrown into, argueably a much larger scale and issues that she was unaware of. " RICK SANCHEZ: "What was her talent? Why'd she beat you guys?" [] HALCRO: "[] The ability to take the focus off public policy, and put it on public relations. We would have debates, and I would walk off the stage towards the end of the general campaign, [] and say, you know this isn't about public policy. This is about populism. And she has a tremendous gift for broad brush strokes, glittering generalities []" Highlight #7 *Wallace: "It is not debatable that she brings the same executive experience to the ticket that Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton Brought" *(MSNBC 10/02/08 6:43pm) DAVID GREGORY: . . .Gov. Palin has been criticized in this recent interviews for not having command of issues, appearing not to understand complex issues . . . 6 in 10 voters see her lacking the experience to be an effective president and a third are now less likely to vote for McCain because of her. What happened? NICOLE WALLACE: Well there's polls and there's pundits and then there's people David . . . this is someone who isn't going to speak as someone who's had a front row seat for the policy debates for the last thirty years. This is someone who speaks as someone who's been affected by those debates . . . she knows what it's like to not have health insurance . . . [ . . . ] GREGORY: Let me ask you another question about experience . . . watch this: JOHN MCCAIN: I am prepared. I am prepared, need no on the job training. I wasn't a mayor for a short period of time, I wasn't a governor for a short period of time. For 20-some years . . . I led, I didn't manage for profit . . . GREGORY: When he was talking about a mayor and governor, he wasn't talking about Governor Palin but . . . he could have been . . . WALLACE: . . . it is not debatable that she brings the same executive experience to the ticket that Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton brought . . . [ . . . ] GREGORY: What has been unfair in the treatment of her do you think? WALLACE: You know, I think that the interviews that she's done, the questions have certainly been above board . . . it's what happened afterward . . . when the maniacs on cable news got a hold of it. The ripped this woman to shreds like I've never seen anyone dig their teeth into a politician alive or dead . . . I think that voters have taken notice that no woman, no candidate has been treated the way this woman and her, her children, I mean her 17-year old daughter has been ripped apart by the American media . . . Highlight #8 *Nicole Wallace: Palin Answers Slowly Because She's "Thoughtful"; Obama is a Liar *(FNC, Studio B, 10/02/08) NICOLE WALLACE: I think people will see tonight a feisty, strong, tough and straight talking governor who is the chief executive of a state, that is an energy producing state and someone who can speak, who maybe hasn't participated in the debates in the halls of congress for the last 25 years but she knows what it's like not to have health insurance, so she understands how vital that debate is and the way it turns out to American families. She's someone for whom *tax cuts or tax increases aren't just a debate that takes place in the senate, they're not a weapon for Barack Obama to use, or to lie about, frankly in his case.* SHEPERD SMITH: What did he lie about? WALLACE: Well, he likes to look the American people in the eye, he did it in the debate last Friday, and say he'll cut taxes for 95% f the American people. It's a flat lie. He has voted to raise taxes on people making as little as 42,000 dollars a year. [] The only clips you see [from the Couric interview] are couple questions that she had to think about, and you know, thinking for a couple minutes on live TV is something that doesn't happen a lot because it looks like forever but you know, *she stopped and thought about it. She a thoughtful woman, she's not throwing out canned sound bites, she thinks through every question.* [] She speaks to the heart of American's anxiety about the state of our economy and the challenges and we've spent alt of time talking about the meltdown n wall street. She got you know both hands on the steering wheel of the American economy and how it affects working families. [] I am certain that the media will to be able to tell us whether she's had a great night or not Highlight #9 *Tucker Bounds Claims Palin is an "Expert" on Energy; Obama Wants to Raise Taxes *(CNN, CNN Newsroom 10/02/08) TUCKER BOUNDS: I think we're pointing to some very serious points which is we're gonna have a spirited debate tonight about real issues and Joe Biden has shown a propensity, just like his running mate Barack Obama to say whatever is politically expedient, often times not exactly based in truth. *Also pointed to a vote that both of those candidates made in support of higher taxes for Americans making just 42,000 year*. I think those are important points to make when you consider that these are two candidates that are talking about running to represent the middle class but their records don't actually show they've stood up for the middle class when it counts most in their paychecks [] BOUNDS: I also want to point out that, you know, in the course of an hour or two long interview there are some things that are gonna be said that aren't gonna look as smooth as they should but there certainly based in some firm convictions. And those are convictions that are largely held by a large swathe of voters *she's an expert on energy issues.* Highlight #10 Tucker Bounds: "Complicated Issues" TUCKER BOUNDS: Well, I think the Sarah Palin that we've all come to know will show up here tonight and I think what's most important is that these debate settings, unlike an impromptu interview, allow a candidate to talk about their record, allow the candidate to talk about their past and their life experience and how those things translate into the kind of public service that Americans expect and need right now [] BOUNDS:* Energy is certainly a complicated issue* .
