St Stephens Symphony Orchestra.pdf
Dear Mr. Epstein,
Leon Botstein asked me to send you a description and budget figures for St. Stephen's Symphony
Orchestra ("Steve" to us). I'm the administrative head of the American Symphony Orchestra, one
of the partners in this project along with Bard College and Longy Conservatory. I think this is a
revolutionary idea that is going to fly in the face not only of the pessimists but of those orchestra
managers and boards whose aversion to risk or change helped feed this current dilemma. This
project is very close to Maestro Botstein's heart—in fact he is taking no compensation for it. He
has worked for years to revitalize rare repertoire and live concert performance; I think this is one
of the most exciting ideas he has ever had.
The budget assumes a reasonable goal for fundraising based on our history of fundraising for the
American Symphony, and then an estimate of additional subsidy (bottom row) that will be
required for the support of Steve. If you would like more detail, please don't hesitate to contact
me.
By the way, he mentioned that you knew Michael Wood. When I was a graduate student in le
century English literature, I once stayed at Michael Wood's home in the UK, though I'm not sure
he would recall; it was many years ago and a different life for me then.
Many thanks,
Lynne
