Dear Gary,
I hope your summer is going well? I am relieved that today is the last day of term and I can
send my office off on leave for the month of August. I on the other hand remain behind until the
9th before I get away.
I have been beavering away with your request to become a member of your advisory board and
because of the nature of the precedent it would set (we don't normally sit on boards of these type
of ventures) I sought higher command consultation.
The upshot is that I have been advised that I should not take up the position on the board as you
would have liked but that I could and should continue to help you in all you are trying to do with
Knowledge Crossing both here in the UK and overseas. It's not a problem with the idea.
The reason for the recommendation not to sit on the board derives from the precedent it would
set and the consequential "perceived" point that there would be some sort of compensation. The
way we do philanthropic activity here is to become Patron rather than sit on the Board of
Trustees — unless it is a royal charity or social enterprise.
I have been considering this `decision making dilemma' for a couple of weeks now and
reluctantly I have been persuaded to sustain the status quo. However I would like to remain
engaged with Knowledge Crossing and what you are doing on a wider basis as I think we think
along similar lines but that you have the `freedom' to pursue certain lines of activity that are
somewhat challenging for me to undertake because of the weight of history and convention we
have here. Interestingly there is no legal impediment to what you have suggested just a long list
of conventions that I am bound by — but am trying to slowly counter, a long and difficult task....
I know you saw David Stern whilst he was in California a week or so ago and I know you
discussed a number of things and whilst he hasn't fully reported to me the discussion I will be
seeing him after the Summer Recess to discuss your discussion and other things.

I look forward to continuing our discussions and I'm sure you will think of a way of making use
of my continued interest and commitment to your ideas.
With best wishes
