Jeffrey Epstein: A Foundation for Philanthropy
Jeffrey Epstein is known to some as a financier, an American money manager with
years of experience in his profession. Mr. Epstein was long associated with Bear Stearns,
as an option trader, specializing in mathematical models such as the-Black-Scholes
option-pricing and later as a products division specialist, advising high net worth clients
on tax strategies. After founding his own firm, his work in finance led him to a lengthy
and varied career. He is now else-well-known for his work in science philanthropy. Mr.
Epstein has contributed to many important scientific endeavors and conferences. His
work has Vi e-supported efeminent scientists around the world, Nobel laureates
and well known luminaries as Stephen Hawking.
A Foundation Devoted to Science Philanthropy
Mr. Epstein's philanthropy is embodied in Thehis Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation. The
foundation was founded in 2000 and exists for one basic purpose: to provide funding-and
finaneial-undeswsiting for endeavors related to cutting edge science and science
education. As the Foundation has grown in prestige and in-influence, it has also grown to
provide funding for youth initiatives, medical facilities, the arts, and more.
The Program for Evolutionary Dynamics
In 2003, the foundation established the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics, at Harvard
University with a $30 million grant. Much of the foundation's work and support is
devoted to research at this vigorous dynanne-program. The program studies evolution
from a mathematical and biochemical point of view and its research has furthered eue•a
general understanding of medicine, genetics; and human origins.
The Program is directed by Dr. Martin Nowak, Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical
Biology at Harvard University. Dr. Nowak is renowned for his work on evolution theory
including the theory of cooperation as a driving force for evolution in biological systems.
Dr. Nowak's research team at the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics also developed the
first mathematical model of fart-the kinetic energy of cancer cells within the human
body—vital for fusthering-huntanitindls-understanding of how cancer works, and how it
might get treated. His research has also -and-have-advanced the understanding of how
original life first forms from RNA chains. None of this work would have been possible
without the financial support of the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation.
Other Science Initiatives
The Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation has also contributed to many other important avenues
of scientific inquiry, including medical research. The list entails genetic research,
undertaken to develop cures for such conditions as Crohn's and Colitis disease,
Alzheimer's disease- multiple sclerosis, breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

Support ofLeading Scientists
In addition to Dr. Martin Nowak, Mr. Epstein has supported the work of countless
eminent scientists and Nobel Laureates around the world. Than list of scientists includes
Gerald Edelman, Murray Gell-Mann, Stephen Hawking, Kip Thorne, Lee Smolin,
Marvin Minsky, Lawrence Krauss, and Gregory Benford.
World Conferences
The Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation also organizes and underwrites major scientific
conferences, bringing together the best minds together to summarize and advance pivotal
subjects. The conferences typically take place in St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands,
where the foundation is based and have featured such scientists and Nobel Laureates; as
Gerard 't Hooft, David Gross, Frank Wilczek, and theoretical physicists Stephen
Hawking and Lawrence Krauss. The conferences have covered topics ranging from
unified gravity theory, neuroscience and; artificial intelligence to,language theory and
global threats to the Earth.
The Evolution ofa Foundation
Initially, the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation was established to support ongoing research
in science, particularly in the fields of physics. neuroscience. evolutionary science and
genetic engineeringlields. The scope of the Foundation's work has only grown, however,
and now encompasses a wide range of enterprises ranging from education to the arts. In
2012 alone, the Foundation has underwritten such organizations as Mount Sinai Hospital,
the Crohn & Colitis Foundation of America, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the
New York Academy of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum.
The list of past recipients is just as eclectic, and as illustrious. In 2011, Mr. Epstein's
foundation supported numerous youth organizations and initiatives including Youth
Lifeline America, Zero Tolerance Basketball, the Rising Steel Youth Orchestra, the St.
Thomas YWCA, the St. Thomas Baseball Explorers, and countless high schools,
elementary schools colleges, universities and graduate schools across the United States
and the world.
In addition, Mr. Epstein's organization has been an active supporter of world peace
accords and peace initiatives—sSome examples include the International Peace Institute,
which has its roots in the United Nations and played a critical role in the Oslo Peace
Accords.
Jeffrey Epstein: Supporting Education and the Arts
The Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation ultimately came to branch out from its support of
science and research, to provide funding for education in the social sciences and other
fields of study including business and economics. To this end, the foundation has

The Man Behind the Foundation
Through his work as a financier and money manager, Mr. Epstein has learned to allocate
resources prudently and effectively. It's a skill set that he draws upon as he seeks to
support the wide range of important and different causes through his Foundation.
In addition to the causes he supports, Jeffrey Epstein's interests and passions are reflected
in the organizations that he belongs to. For example, Jeffrey Epstein was a former board
member of Rockefeller University, one of the most prestigious graduate science
universities in the country. Jeffrey Epstein was a former member of the New York
Academy of Science, a former member of the Council of Foreign Relations, the Trilateral
Commission, an active member of the Edge Organization, and sits on the committee of
the Mind, Brain and Behavior Committee at Harvard University.

Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation: Philanthropy for Science
Increasingly, scientists are coming to depend on private donors to fund their research;
while grant money is in increasingly short supply, science philanthropy is on the rise.
What this means is that scientists are coming to seek out more unconventional sources of
funding for the work that they do. What most scientists are looking for is an independent
financial backer like Jeffrey Epstein whose foundation has underwritten numerous
research laboratories, science departments, and scientific conferences across the country
and someone capable of establishing new university departments such as the Program for
Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard University.
The Jeffrey Epstein VIFoundation Supports Martin Nowak
There are many prestigious scientists who have received financial underwriting from the
Foundation. One of them is Dr. Martin Nowak. Currently, Dr. Nowak serves as a
Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Biology at Harvard University. Reeentlyr BF

Dr. Nowak is also the Director for Program on Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard
University. This groundbreaking Program has conducted vital research on genetics and
human origins, studying the concept of evolution from the standpoint of mathematical
and biochemical models. The program is funded by Jeffrey Epstein.

In addition to his current work at Harvard, Dr. Nowak is well-known for his 1990
research with Robert May, examining and explaining the delay between HIV infection
and AIDS onset. He did so through the use of evolutionary models that has subsequently
received confirmation through repeated tests and experimentation:
Further research interests of Dr. Nowak include: somatic evolution of cancer; stem cells
and tissue architecture; genetic redundancy; the evolution of language, of graph theory,
and of game theory; the evolution of cooperation and fairness; and pre-life conditions.

Mr. Epstein has also supported Dr. Nowak's original research on the origin of life and
RNA replication on Earth, as well as his 2004 research at Princeton's Institute for
Advanced Study. . Recently, Dr. Nowak was also a keynote speaker at Templeton
University's dialogue on the intersection of science and religious faith.

Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation: Philanthropy for Medicine
The Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation began as a vehicle for science philanthropy.
Initially, much of its support was in the fields of physics and neuroscience. However as
the Foundation matured, it broadened its scope to support a wide range of cutting edge
medical research, treatments, and cures, particularly in the area of genetics. Mr. Epstein
and his Foundation haves also worked with various organizations in support of ongoing
cancer research.
The Foundation's Support of Cancer Research
There are two common dilemmas that restrict the treatment of cancer today. First, there is
the reality that many therapies, such as chemotherapies and radiation treatments, can have
adverse effects on otherwise healthy cells, to the extent that they actually kill the person
before beating the cancer. The second problem is that many cancer cells are able to
quickly respond to a new treatment, genetically adapting and ultimately becoming
immune to it.
New research is seeking to curb the impact of these cellular mutations. New advances in
circulating tumor cell technology (CTC), spearheaded by Dr. Daniel Haber, of
Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, and Dr. Mehmet Toner, of the Center for
BioMicroElectroMechanical Systems, confront this issue head on. The research these
scientists have undertaken is underwritten by the American Cancer Society and has
received support from the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation.
The Foundation's Support of CTC Technology
CTC technology is still maturing, but it poses significant reason for optimism. The
technology entails a simple blood test, which scientists can use to examine potential
genetic adaptations and mutations on a cellular level. These adaptations are then
thoroughly documented, and scientists are then able to treat cancer in genetic `real time'
using medieines-targeted drugs that tackle secondary and tertiary mutations as soon as
they occur.thattespeeifieally-ftwant-te-addtessiffictieultteeelhdafrabliennalities:
The use of CTC technology is one of the most promising fields in cancer research, andbut
it stands poised to make a huge difference in the way clinicians deal with the diagnosis
and treatment of cancer.
Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation: Research for Cures
This work, with the American Cancer Society, is just one aspect of the Foundation's
commitment for eliminating disease. To date, the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation has
offered support to several medical facilities and laboratories across the world. A partial
list of these medical organizations includes: The National Multiple Sclerosis Society,

Mount Sinai Hospital, the Crohn & Colitis Foundation of America, the Alzheimer's
Association, and Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Indeed Jeffrey Epstein is zealous for
scientific and medical philanthropy, as seen by the work of the Jeffrey Epstein VI
Foundation.

Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation: Philanthropy for Thought
It has received recognition as the world's greatest think tank. It has won accolades from
such prestigious publications as The Guardian and The Observer. It houses more than
600 of the world's greatest minds—and, it has received the financial support of
philanthropic organizations like the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation. It is The Edge
Foundation, and gathers together some of the greatest minds in the sciences and social
sciences for the purposes of discourse, debate and a sharing of cutting edge concepts with
the public at large.
The Jeffrey Epstein VIFoundation Supports Think Tanks
The Edge Foundation was founded in 1996, by John Brockman, a leading author and an
agent of social change and his-Feputatien4s-fer--adveeeting-en-behalf--acall things
thought-provoking or avant-garde. His vision was to start an online forum through which
the world's brightest minds might share their ideas—and that is exactly what he did.
His vision is-what-led to the founding of The Edge, a website that features contributions
from the world's smartest people. This is not just a place where these-eminent men and
women share their-every passing flights of fancy, however. The Jeffrey Epstein VI
Foundation supports the organization because; rather than encourage random ideas, it
encourages cutting-edge ideas—ideas intended to promote scientific advancement.
Currently, The Edge Foundation stands as one of the most prestigious and important
think tanks in the world; and stands as a prime online location for robust inquiry and
thought.
The Members of the Think Tank
The work done by this think tank includes many well-known thinkers, from many
different disciplines. The list includes many Nobel Laureates. Among them are physicist
Frank Wilczek, chemist Kary Mullis, theoretician Gerard't Hooft, and more. The Edge
Foundation also houses well-known writers such as Richard Dawkins, Brian Greene, Ian
McEwan, and many others.
Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation: Fostering Conversation
This think tank is not an exclusive gaggle of thinkers. A primarily online endeavor, its
doors are open to the public. Anyone can stop by the site and seek to participate, simply
by reading essays and keeping tabs on the ongoing, daily conversations.
Jeffrey Epstein and his organization, The Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation, are more than
happy to financially sponsor this important work. That is because Jeffrey Epstein—a
EFTA01112215
long-time proponent of science and learning—believes in the importance of thought-
centered conversation.
