Join us each week for BAU Sweatpants Seminars, training that will cover a rich and diverse
number of behavioral analysis, social science, and psychological topics relevant to all of the FBI's
operational and analytical areas of focus.
How does it work? Each Thursday the BAU will send out and invitation for a Skype meeting that
contains the topic, and read-ahead materials for the session. The Seminar will be held the
following Wednesday, to give participants a chance to schedule, respond and review the class
material.
What is the format of the BAU Sweatpants Seminars? The classes are structured to be
substantive and engaging, lasting approximately 45 minutes to an hour depending on questions
and conversation.
•The content will be provided via PPT (or other media) over Skype for Business
•Each Seminar will contain a summary of the material, key findings and operational applications.
•After the substantive training there will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions and
have discussion.
Kick-off. The first Sweatpants Seminar is ready for launch on Wednesday, April 15, 2020. In this
session we will dive into Cognitive Interviewing (CI), an innovative interviewing method to
enhance witness recall that has been scientifically researched, validated and refined by Dr.
Ronald Fisher and Dr. Edward Geiselman over the last 30 years. First, we will look at the history
and underpinnings of the Cl. Next, we'll explore the elements of the technique, step-by-step.
Lastly, we'll delve into a little-known variation of the technique that Dr. Geiselman introduced in
2012, the Cognitive Interview for Suspects (CIS). Attached to this meeting invite are four articles
that can be read/reviewed in advance of the Seminar for familiarization:
1. Geiselman, E. and Fisher, R. (2014). "Interviewing Witnesses and Victims," in Investigative

Interviewing: The Essentials, ed. Michel St-Yves (Toronto, ON: Carswell).
2. Geiselman, E. and Fisher, R. (2012). The Cognitive Interview for Suspects (CIS). American
Journal of Forensic Psychology, Vol. 30, Issue 3.
3. Geiselman, E. and Fisher, R. (2010). The cognitive interview method of conducting police
interviews: eliciting extensive information and promoting therapeutic jurisprudence. Int. J. Law
Psychiatry, 33(5-6):321-8
4. Geiselman, E. and Fisher, R. (1989). Field Test of the Cognitive Interview: Enhancing the
Recollection of Actual Victims and Witnesses of Crime. Journal of Applied Psychology, Vol. 74, No.

We look forward to seeing you on April 15th!
