Subject: Sitka, Alaska
We've had several people ask about activities to enjoy while in Sitka. Below is a brief list of some ideas:
Fishing - Great halibut and salmon fishing exists in Sitka! There are many many charter options available in
Sitka. I don't have a lead on who is best, but yelp/tripadvisor can help with recommendations. If you are
interested in fishing, please book soon as many charters are already at capacity for the summer!
Hiking - Harbor Mountain Trail is a great start for hiking in Sitka! One of my favorite hikes in town, when my
family lived in Sitka we would do this hike often. There are tons of other trails to hike on the island as well, Mt.
Verstovia Trail and Gavin Hill Trail are other popular hikes.
Float Plane tours and Glacier tours - Float plane tours range from 40 minutes to 3 hours. and can
accommodate a short flight just around Baranof Island (the Russian name for Sitka), or 3 hours of a tour of
entire Southeast Alaska.
Also there are several bike and kayak rental locations exist throughout the island.
Sitka has tremendous history, with a beautiful blend of Russian and Tlinglit (pronounced KLINKIT) influences.
Throughout town you can visit churches, tribal houses, totem pole parks, museums, and historical monuments
that share and outline these influences. www.sitka.orq is a good place to start for more information on historical
adventures in Sitka. Sitka also has some hidden treasures from its involvement in World War II (a Naval air base
was opened on Japonski island, the small island next to Sitka - you can drive across a bridge to get there).
There are hidden WWII bunkers throughout the island...Will and I took a short walk to a few bunkers last fall,
happy to share how to get there for whoever is interested!
The Sitka Music Festival will be going on June 5-28, you can visit www.sitkamusicfestival.orq for more details.
This festival brings thousands of people to Sitka each year!
If you are an animal lover, whale watching is a great event while in Sitka. Also, you can visit Fortress of the
Bear. the Sitka Sound Science Center (sitkascience.orq) and the Alaska Raptor Center for great education and
viewing of some native Alaska animals. Visit sitka.orq for more details on this!
Of course, you can always just walk around town, take a quick jaunt towards the shore anywhere and your
chances of seeing wildlife are pretty good!
I'm always available on my cell-and happy to chat anytime.
For those of you that have not yet booked your air travel, Delta Airlines is now offering a direct flight from Seattle -
Sitka, beginning in May. Alaska Airlines is the only other carrier that offers a direct flight along this route, and the
direct flight from Seattle - Sitka is the best way to get to the island!
Looking forward to you joining us!
