Hello All,
Just got off the phone with our tracker, Evan, on the ground in Pensacola.
Below are the notes from our call.
Big Highlights*
*
- Palin raises Social Security -- Promises we'll protect the entitlement
programs, esp. Social Security.
- Adds that no presidential campaign is complete w/o Dems coming down
here and stirring up fear on this issue. if you expected better from the
candidate who promised to do away with old politics, youre in for
disappointment. he's tried to exploit issue.
- Says that Obama calls Mccain's health care plan a "tax" -- in fact, its
changing health care for the better, it will help middle class w/o costing
them a dime. (vs. obama's plan, which will drive up costs)
- Continues linking Obama's pattern of poor judgment /changing story on
Ayers to having 2 advisors running Fannie and saying he'd sit down with
Ahmadejinad w/o preconditions (what next? will he say he didn't know about
their backgrounds?)
Pensacola, FL: Palin Rally 10/07/08
(Disclaimer: The following are notes, not direct quotes. If you'd like a
quotable transcript or video of any part below, please email us.)
Background details
*
- about 8500 ppl - venue at capacity
- more seniors than normally in audience
- Crist gave intro remarks
- Crowd more enthusiastic than usual, though there was some booing at
palin's remarks (also some indistinguishable yelling)
- Tracker didn't see any demonstrators (except 2 signs reading "joe
sixpack for palin" and "Palin? more like BABEin"
*
Speech Highlights
*
- people in FL ready to shake things up in DC
- as your gov in FL mentioned, way up there in AK it may seem like we're
worlds apart - my daughter willow texted me from class and there's snow
all on the ground - but we're all americans
- mccain and i are taking our msg of reform to voters of every party or
no party - we know that its gonna come rt down to the wire - our tkt
represents change you can believe in - we dont just talk about change, we
have the track record
- FL, beautiful as it is, i was hoping id visit last wk, but i had an
appt that just wouldnt wait in St. Louis last thurs night - i had that lil
debate with sen. biden - he's a fine and decent man, i enjoyed meeting him
there for the first time but i so enjoyed making the case
- ppl said a couple of your answers they werent real clear - i said i was
just giving tina fey some new material, job security for tina fey - job
security for SNL
- mccain offers optimistic vision and real and pragmatic solutions
- for a campaign that says its all about the future, they sure talk all
about the past because thats where you find blame. we look to the future b/c
thats where you find solutions
- mccain is the only one who will find solutions and not exploit this
econ crisis. as senator he's seen abuses and as president he'll end those.
we'll sign into law reforms that will help middle class and help business
owners create jobs. we'll get costs under control, incl. student loans.
we'll complete the work of educ reform to give every child a chance and
eveyr parent a good choice
- mccain will impose spending freeze on govt to cover all but most vital
fns. we're in a hole, and what do you when you're in a hole? you stop
digging
- we'll review every dept, agency of govt and eliminate those that arent
working for American ppl
- we'll confront $10T debt fed govt has run up and we'll balance budget
- we'll make health care affordable and accessible - obama is saying- his
plan will drive up and costs - our plan will help middle class w/o costing
them a dime. in fact, itll give them a $5k credit so they can buy health
care they choose. adn obama is calling that a tax. its not, its
changing health care for the better, putting health care on your
side. [crowd
yells-- sounds like "Fact check!"]
- we'll protect the entitlement programs americans depend on, esp. Social
Security. no pres. campaign is complete w/o Dems coming down here and
stirring up fear on this issue. if you expected better from the candidate
who promised to do away with old politics, youre in for disappointment. he's
tried to exploit issue. mccain will keep america's promise to our
seniors. they
are the foundation of our fams.
- put all these issues together and mccain is the only candidate in this
race with plan to actually help middle class, cut taxes. and the only man in
this race thatll talk about the wars adn unlike our opponent he isnt afraid
to use the word 'victory'. our opponent can go on and on in speeches about
the wars america is fighting. just once id like to hear him say he wants
america to win. he voted to cut off funding for our troops tho he said he
wouldnt.
- mccain is a different kind of man, he believes in our troops and their
mission. as mom of 1 of those troops, hes exactly who i want as
commander-in-chief. he served country in uniform for 22 yrs, 5 1/2 yrs as
POW. after graduating from naval academy, he was stationed right here in
pensacola. in your skies, he trained and learned how to be a naval aviator.
he was proud to be part of FL's proud military tradition. there are those
today who have served today or in the past. do us the honor, raise your
hand. [cheers] we honor you. ty for your service and sacrifice.
- in 28 days will be time of choosing in our country. in politics there
are some who use change to promote their careers and then there are leaders
like mccain who use his career to promote change. a moment when principles
and political independence matter more than party line. mccain is his own
man, not run with DC herd. he's a maverick, and we dont just talk about
change, we have a track record of making change actually happen. [sarah!
sarah!]
- as a mayor and gov, i reminded ppl that govt is not always the answer,
too often the problem. so we put govt back on side of the ppl b/c i always
knew who i was acctable to, the ppl who hired me, the ppl up there in AK. in
our admin, we'll never forget, we'll be there in DC to work for you, the ppl
of america. [booooo] what i did was cut taxes, personal prop. taxes and
sm business inventory taxes. as gov, i suspended state fuel taxes, and i
returned a chunk of that surplus back to AK ppl b/c they can spend better
than govt can spend for them. same thing on a natl level.
- we will set this nation firmly on a path to energy indep. its a matter
of natl security and econ prosperity. its gonna mean american energy
resources by American ingenuity and American workers. we'll also bring tax
relief to every american and cut taxes for our businesses so they can hire
more ppl
- probably the phoniest claim in campaign full of them is that obama is
going to cut taxes. he's built his career on raising taxes first as Chicago
politician, then as Sen, he had 94 chances, and he voted against it - even
on middle class fams making just $42k / yr. just giving you some straight
talk. then tried to waste $1M / day on earmarks, and now committed to nearly
$1T in new spending. he's never said how he'll pay for it. go with your gut
or do the math and youll come to conclusion: obama will raise your taxes.
- pattern here: lefttwing agenda prettied up to look like mainstream -
while everyone knows that we must put country back on right track. higher
taxes, activist judges, bigger govt, retreat for america- thats not the
right track for america, thats a dead end.
- another pattern in how our opponent talked about 1 of his earliest
assocs. 1 of his earliest supporters was Bill Ayers [boos] according to
NYT, he's an unrepentant domestic terrorists who planned bombings [ yelling]
against pentagon and our US capitol. obama a few months ago said he was just
a guy in the neighborhood. yesterday he was saying he didnt know about
his backgrd or something - the story keeps changing.
- whats next? claiming he didnt know 2 of his biggest supporters were
running Fannie Mae, the subprime mortgage giant thats done so much harm -
maybe he just thought they were part of his DC neighborhood. since he's been
called out on saying he'll meet with terrorist state leaders like
ahmadejinad? maybe he'll say he didnt know about his radical
background?will he claim they didnt say higher taxes are patriotic?
remember when biden
said that? this is about judgment in the next president. mccain has it,
obama doesnt.
- so tonight, we get to take another look at the contrasts. its TH time
live from nashville. we'll see differences between politician w/ faith in
govt and a leader w/ faith in you. difference between inspiring words and
inspiring deeds. between a politician that wants to observe and analyze us
and a leader that knows and understands us in America. in short,
difference between guy who makes big promises and guy who gets things
done. between fine talker and a great leader. the time is near, and its all
about what we believe in. mccain and i believe what reagan believed. its a
culture of life and the belief in america that we are a good and honorable
nation. america is not the problem, america is the solution. we're not a
perf nation but we learn from our mistakes. collectively we represent a perf
idyll of democracy thats based on freedom and equal rts. we are a shining
city on a hill, beacon of light. [USA! USA!] [Palin joins: USA!] man i love
you FL b/c you just get it. TY. yes, reagan used to say we are that, where
others craving those values of democracy, those virtues of freedom. he
reminded us, as mccain and i know, those virtues of freedom are worth
fighting for.
- our opponents will go on and on about how they'll "Fight for you."
there's only 1 man in this campaign who has ever really fought for you. he
has the courage to keep on fighting for you. he loves you, america. he's
proud to be an American. TY for supporting you. God bless you.
