Update from Reid
To: Jeffrey
This is a group email to friends and colleagues sharing recent essays I've written,
interviews I've conducted, and politicians I support.
As citizens, it's important that we support the good people that go into politics. I highly
recommend contributing to the campaigns of two politicians: David Chiu and Cory
Booker. I explain my support for each at the bottom of this email.
These updates are infrequent but feel free to unsubscribe. I'm always interested in
feedback — especially critical or anything I missed.
All the best,
Reid

"Resource
Revolution"
As the world's
surging middle
class demands
more goods and
services, there will
be massive
opportunities for
entrepreneurs to
create more
efficient industries
and more
productive business
ecosystems. That's
the optimistic take
of McKinsey
director Matt
Rogers and
Stanford professor
Stefan Heck in their
new book,
Resource
Revolution, which I
reviewed on the
Linkedln
Influencers
platform. Network
intelligence will play
a key role in
achieving the
efficiencies that can
ultimately boost

resource
productivity. To
stave off peak oil,
peak water, and
other instances of
potential resource
depletion, we need
to keep pushing
closer to peak

Creation:
The
Future of
PayPal
In January,
activist
investor and
eBay
shareholder
Carl Icahn
began
arguing that
the best way

for eBay to
create long-
term value
for its
shareholders
was to spin
off its most
valuable
asset,
PayPal. I
challenged
this notion
on the
Linkedln
Influencers
platform,
contending
that
investing in
businesses
that create
ongoing
franchises
and
economically
productive
ecosystems
is a more
fruitful way
to achieve
long-term
value rather
than
executing
trades that

immediately
create some

value.
Earlier this
month, Icahn
came to
terms with
eBay and
withdrew his
proposal.

Every year, an

While the

The Linkedln
Volunteer
Marketplace:
Connecting
Professionals
to Nonprofit
Volunteer
Opportunities
In January,
Linkedln
introduced the
Linkedln
Volunteer
Marketplace, a
new sphere
where nonprofits
EFTA_R1_00370996
EFTA01925409
can publicize
volunteer
opportunities and
Linkedln users
can look for
opportunities that
best leverage
their skillsets.
Talent is as
critical to the
nonprofit sector
as it is to the for-
profit sector, and
this new facet of
Linkedln is
helping us make
our economic
graph — a
complete digital
representation of
the global
economy — that
much richer. And
importantly, the
Linkedln
Volunteer
Marketplace
enables
nonprofits to work
well with the
economic graph.

Recent Interviews
My Chat with Matt Mullenweg
As part of the Linkedln Speaker Series, I spoke with
Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress and the
CEO of Automattic. In a wide-ranging, hour-long
conversation, Matt and I touched on the future of
online publishing, open-source software
development, and how you run a massively
distributed, "location-agnostic" company where very
few of the organization's 200-plus employees actually
live near — much less work in — the company's San
Francisco headquarters.

My Chat with Eric Ries
In another recent instance of the Linkedln Speaker
Series, I interviewed Eric Ries, author of The Lean
Startup. We talked about many of his book's key
concepts, including what it means to create a
"minimum viable product," why customer feedback
should always drive your product strategy, and how,
in the current climate of intense competition and
rapidly evolving technologies and business
conditions, "whoever learns the fastest wins."

Political Support
David Chiu for Assembly
David has been a technology executive (COO of
Grassroots.com, a portfolio company), a district
attorney, and the president of the Board of
Supervisors in SF. He combines business
competence with social justice. And, in the current
climate in SF where we need social justice to involve
the tech industry rather than reject it, he is one of the
two primary voices. His election for Assembly is the
key battlefield by which the opponents of technology
and the tech industry will test their ability to dominate
the politics of SF. Its seriously important to progress
that he win.

Cory Booker for Senate
Cory barely needs introduction. Senator from New
Jersey with the skills and insights to be a national
leader as well as an advocate for his state. He
focuses on jobs, economic empowerment, and the
use of technology and entrepreneurs to make society
better. He won the one-year remainder term last
year, and now is up for election for the full term.
