He and his security detail arrived by SUV Friday afternoon at an Allen-Edmonds store on Connecticut Avenue -- right below the offices of Americans United to Protect Social Security. One of its sharp-eyed staffers noticed him, and about 20 members of the advocacy group descended to the sidewalk, waving signs reading "Hands Off My Social Security." Although in the middle of trying on tasseled loafers and wingtips, the Tennessee Republican padded to the doorway in his stocking feet, then joined them in debate. "He stuck his head out the door and asked who we were," recalls Brad Woodhouse , spokesman for the newly formed group opposing GOP efforts to partially privatize Social Security. "It was quite funny. To his credit he didn't just ignore us or the passersby who eventually stopped to ask him questions." For about five minutes, Woodhouse told us, Frist exchanged views with liberals and labor activists, expressing support for the president's plan. Then he resumed shoe shopping, eventually purchasing two pairs. By the time the senator finally exited the store, the crowd had swelled to about 50.
