I know this is a non-partisan meeting and I will try to speak in that way * I want to talk about three topics that will be relevant to this race and answer questions. Important to answer questions to see what's on your mind. o Will, how, what. o Will: will we have a debt and make a decision about how to deal with our nation's finances? Candidates don't want to talk about it, but it's the number one threat. I have lobbied hard to be on the budget committee, but I shouldn't have, it's a total hoax. Only 25-30% of the money in the budget is flexible, the rest is on autopilot. This is the greatest threat to our nation's greatness. o The big number is the entitlement programs. I'm 63, and it doesn't take a lot. When this meeting ends, our nation will be weaker because of our debt. o It has become conservative to spend the same amount of the money, but not pay for it. We keep on borrowing money because other countries keep on giving us loans. o What: What are we going to do about this economic crisis? The standard of living, income for middle class has not increased in the last 30 years. Technology has allowed for efficient communications, allowing for greater wealth, but also requiring less people to get things done. o VW is looking to build driverless cars, potentially here in Chattanooga. That's great, but that means that the trucking industry will disappear. o This is an international divide that has caused voters to act out in unexpected ways o How is our country going to relate to the rest of the world? o I used to build shopping centers, joined SFRC to broaden my knowledge. I have learned a great deal about U.S. foreign policy. o The elite foreign policy establishment doesn't have a very good track record, there needs to be a debate in our country. o Neo-Con side v. Liber-Internationalist: they're the same thing for different reasons o I commented on a foreign policy speech that one of the candidates made because what I heard in it was a step into what I would call realism, akin to Bush 41. o Certainly we believe our country is should play a special role and because of our exceptionalism we can shape the world into a greater place through the standards in our leadership o The realism is that we're going to have to deal with people different than us to achieve our nation's goals. o I hope as citizens who have charted the course for this election each of you will demand is that all the pundits -I don't even know who the establishment is, I'm not the establishment-things have turned out differently than people anticipated. I thought it was a very positive step. o A return to realism in our foreign policy debate, a matureness we saw in Bush 41. I think Jim Baker embodies this realism while paying heed to American exceptionalism. * If you're asked to serve as VP what would you do? o This is that kind of year. I know the questioner, he's allergic to beestings. I have nothing to do with that decision, I cherish the job that I have. I loved being mayor of this community so much, you could touch people every day. Lead civic, and spiritual person in the city.
