*Main Topics: *Religious Forum, Ralph Reed, Marriage Infidelity and Morals,
Cheating Scandal
Summary of Shift:
* *Commentary surrounding the forum on Religion both presidential
candidates attended on Saturday dominated the election coverage this
morning. Most saw McCain coming out as the winner, with his answers more
direct and simple compared with Obama's more lengthy and descriptive
answers. McCain's comments on the failure of his first marriage as his
lowest moral moment were also highlighted as a new side of McCain he doesn't
often show. Obama releases their fundraising numbers for the past month,
raising 55 million dollars and doubling the amount McCain raised. Vice
presidential speculation continues to run rampant, with Obama expected to
name his choice any moment now this week, and then McCain expected to follow
shortly after. McCain spoke in Orlando this morning at a VFW for Veterans of
Foreign Wars.
Non-political news was dominated by the approaching Tropical
Storm Fay which is threatening Florida and the Keys. Evacuations are already
underway. Pakistani President, and Pro-West Ally Musharraf has announced
that he will resign from his presidency in order to avoid bringing his
country through a tumultuous impeachment process. Russia has promised to
begin withdrawing troops from Georgia beginning today, however it is unclear
where they will go or if they will stay in the disputed regions of South
Ossetia. Flooding forced emergency evacuations of hikers and tourists in the
Grand Canyon due to a dam breaking.

*Controversy Over McCain's Fundraiser With Ralph Reed in Atlanta Today* (CNN
08/18/08 6:34am)
MCCAIN: Could I ask our veterans just to stand so we can say thank you,
thank you for your service to our country.
PAUL STEINHAUSER: You'll probably hear more words like that later this
morning as John McCain speaks in Orlando at the annual convention of the
veterans of foreign wars. *But it's his fundraiser later in the day in
Atlanta that's causing controversy. Ralph Reed, the onetime boy wonder of
the Christian Coalition says he's involved with the event. Reed is closely
connected to a corruption scandal that rocked Washington. Not surprisingly,
Democrats have pounced. And the McCain campaign says there's no connection
whatsoever between the fundraiser and Ralph Reed. *As for McCain himself, he
heads off the trail on Wednesday. Back to the ranch in Arizona and that
gives Barack Obama the spotlight as we expect an announcement later this
week on his running mate.

*Did McCain Cheat? Fox and Friends Cover Obama Camp Claims of McCain
Listening to Answers During Religion Forum* (FNC 08/18/08 7:23am)
STEVE DOOCY: […] On Meet the Press yesterday, Andrea Mitchell, who's been
following the campaign said that she'd heard from Obama's people that McCain
probably overheard stuff. […]
GRETCHEN CARLSON: […] You're not supposed to hear anything, that was the way
it was supposed to be set up. That he was in this cone of silence.
DOOCY: You're exactly right. *So the Campaign Director, Rick Davis, for John
McCain has written a letter to NBC's President, Steve Kappas and said, where
is she coming up with this stuff? She is just reporting as if it's fact,
these rumors from Obama. *The whole context was, Andrea Mitchell was talking
about how John McCain had a really good night. And Barack Obama did not. So
now, the campaign is calling for a meeting with NBC because it simply is not
fair.
DAVE BRIGGS: Rick Davis says they've abandoned non-partisan coverage of the
presidential race. Fair and balanced? This is an era of text messaging, of
blogging, of instant messages. You can for a minute see that the Obama
people might have that theory. And Andrea Mitchell was only saying that the
Obama people were saying that.
CARLSON: Because apparently McCain was on the way to the event while Obama
was speaking, instead of actually being in a room by himself for that hour.
So that's how these rumors started. But here's exactly what she said, "The
Obama people must feel that he didn't do quite as well as they might have
wanted to in that context, because what they are putting out privately is
that McCain may not have been in the cone of silence." Ok, so actually if
you're in the Obama camp, I'm not sure if you'd even bring this up. Because,
the only thing that can come back to you is, well you're talking about this
because you don't think your candidate did as well.
BRIGGS: And John McCain was extremely on message. *And what they're talking
about, some of the questions that Rick Warren asked, John McCain was already
ready with that answer halfway through. But I think that is because he was
extremely prepared.* Rick Warren gave the candidates topics that he would
cover. Nothing completely shocked these guys. Both candidates were prepared
with, at least given the topics they would go over.

*Ralph Reed Praises McCain's Performance at Religious Forum, Joel Hunter
Considers Need For More Than Just Pro-Life Rhetoric To Bring Down Abortion
Rate* (FNC 08/18/08 7:27am)
STEVE DOOCY: […] There was a stark difference, when asked the question by
Rev. Rick Warren, when does life begin. And John McCain was emphatic, he
said at conception. Barack Obama talked for a little while, and then he
eventually made the joke, that's above my pay grade. […]
JOEL HUNTER: […] John McCain, of course, wasn't deliberating. He was having
a national opportunity for a national audience, came through with his
particular view. Which happens to be my view also. But, the point was, while
Obama was technically correct, it is imprecise, the bible doesn't speak
specifically to it, McCain got the point.
RALPH REED: […] The other reason why it was such a great night for Senator
McCain is it's not secret that he's had issues with this community over the
years. And he really needs to connect with this constituency, and I think
the question on when a child has human rights, […] McCain was strong, he was
firm, he promised those folks he would be a pro-life president and then he
bridged to a critical issue that Obama never even mentioned, and that is his
judicial nominees and what kind of judges that he would appoint. Obama
responded when he was asked, but McCain brought it up himself, pro-actively.
That's a huge issue in this community, and again it was another example of
McCain capitalizing and Obama I think having a huge missed opportunity.
[…]
HUNTER: I want to have a little counter-balance here*. He's right, but, the
simplistic answers, or the simple answers rather that McCain gave. Simply,
that I'm going to be a pro-life president with pro-life policies. We've had
that and the abortion rate has not gone down. So we got to have something
more than just a pro-life president with pro-life policies to reduce the
number of abortions.*

*McCain Gets Weepy; Will McCain's Emotional Moments Connect Him To
Voters?*(FNC 08/18/08 8:25am)
DAVE BRIGGS: That was very interesting to hear him talk about that. We
haven't heard one thing about his first marriage. In light of the whole John
Edwards scandal, some people were starting to talk about that failure.
There's an interesting article in the politico.com last week that said DNC
folks were tinkering with the idea of portraying his philandering on his
first marriage and getting that out there as one of those negative attack
ads. So it might have been a preemptive strike. I think people like to see
John McCain really open up with some personal stories in that forum.
GRETCHEN CARLSON: I totally agree with you on the point of view of the
personal stories, because a lot of people had been encouraging him to talk a
little bit more about his POW experience and to talk a little bit more about
his religious beliefs. As you could see if you watched this forum, it's
tough for him to do. He started to well up from time to time. And I'm
surprised there aren't articles this morning about analogies to Hillary
Clinton welling up, how that helped her in New Hampshire. I'm surprised
you're not seeing articles today about John McCain becoming more emotional
will be a positive for campaign. We've seen President Bush well up. But John
McCain, he strikes me as a tougher kind of guy, that doesn't want to well
up. But I do think it was a good thing for him to well up.
STEVE DOOCY: A guy with a heart.

*Dan Hill Examines McCain's Facial Expressions and Speaking Nuances During
Religious Forum* (FNC 08/18/08 8:30)
DAN HILL: […] What McCain does, is he jabs his hand for the audience, he's
coming at you. Typical, standard contrast between their two personalities.
[…]
MCCAIN: My greatest moral failing, and I have been a very imperfect person,
is the failure of my first marriage. It's my greatest moral failure.
STEVE DOOCY: What do you see?
HILL: *What I see there is two things. One, is his lips are very tight, so
he's really feeling some frustration, some anguish over this. He also shows
just a slight bit of contempt. The corner of the lip, the mouth turns up in
a smirk, and I think the contempt is toward himself for his failings
here.*So it was a successful moment for McCain, he wants to come
across as
speaking to honor, to sacrifice, to duty. This is after all, an election
about authenticity, we have change that you can believe in versus straight
talk express. And both these candidates were really on stage trying to say,
I come from the heart, you can trust me, you can believe in me. And I think
that McCain had a very good moment there.
