To: Jeffrey Epsteinbeevacahon©gmail com) Cc: Lawrence Krauss From: Lawrence Krauss Sent Thur 9/9/2010 1:18:40 AM Subject: talk you keep forgetting to phone back... I would really like to address both your concerns about my own efforts, and also the nature of the meeting, the latter of which I want to discuss here. We are constrained by the fact that (a) invitations have already gone out to a pretty distinguished group of scientists, and some others, and (b) we have already billed this as an 'external advisory meeting, and we are constrained by that. They expect this to be an advisory meeting for Origins... If we somehow cancel this, after the invitations have been made, we lose credibility with all of these people and damage the program tremendously. Within the context of what you and I have discussed I would certainly like to use this to explore interesting scientific ideas, and to set the stage for really interesting meetings.. namely to explore areas where small workshops can make a difference.. to use the scientific expertise of this group to assess which questions may be most fruitful for exploration, and which ones might benefit from different approaches.. all these things are of interest to you too I think.. but this is slightly different than having those meetings as themselves, which we will want to do.. So, I want to bring together this group and ask the question, how can we have the greatest impact on moving knowledge in your disciplines forward in interesting areas of science.. which questions should we focus on and why, and how.. It will involve concrete science, not fringe stuff or 'science policy' that is why I broke down the agenda I sent you into several key areas which seem fascinating, and in which we can actually do something.. We will need to devote one hour at the end to suggestions from the group on where we can go for money for Origins, and how, but that is not unreasonable I think. Thoughts? LMK Lawrence M.
