Mr. Indyke, I received your voice mail this morning saying that you were traveling for several weeks and asking that I send you in writing my questions about Jeffrey Epstein's philanthropy. Reuters strongly prefers to conduct interviews in person or by phone, and I believe that we could cover all my questions in a relatively brief interview. However, my questions are below, divided into categories for convenience. I would appreciate hearing back as soon as possible because we plan to publish by Friday, Jan. 30. You should know that I was earlier in contact with Martin Weinberg, Jeffrey's attorney in Boston, with questions and multiple interview requests. Philanthropy questions - I understand from Jeffrey's website and from tax returns that he's given to many charitable causes. Why is he interested in these causes, in particular scientific research? - How many organizations has Jeffrey given to? - Can you give me a sense of the scope of Jeffrey's philanthropy? For example, how much has he disbursed in the past three years, and what are the total assets of his foundation(s)? Florida litigation questions - How have the Florida federal court litigation and the resulting news stories affected Jeffrey's philanthropy? - Is Jeffrey receiving messages of support from his grant recipients? Alternately, have any recipients returned donations in the past month? Or ever? - Reuters interviewed people at several nonprofit organizations who have received money from Jeffrey, and some of them expressed concern about being associated with Jeffrey's foundation now. Some said they would not accept any more money. Does Jeffrey want to respond? - How much should charitable organizations care about the backgrounds of their funders? Does Jeffrey think they should care about his? Press release questions - One grant recipient, MIT, told Reuters that Jeffrey had posted incorrect information online about contributions to the school for the restoration of Rothko murals, and that Jeffrey had agreed to remove the information. Does Jeffrey want to respond? - Have other organizations besides MIT commented on the accuracy of his press releases? 1 EFTA01138979 123445567789 12:48:31 p.m. 01-29-2015 2/2 - Some of the press releases on Jeffrey's website are attributed to news organizations, including Reuters, the Boston Globe, and the Wall Street Journal. Why are they attributed to news organizations if they are press releases? Is this intentional? - What is Jeffrey's motivation for sending out press releases about his philanthropy? - Until this week, Jeffrey's website listed his grant recipients. Why is that information no longer online? Foundation tax and legal questions - How many different private foundations does Jeffrey run? I have looked at three: Epstein Interests; the J. Epstein Virgin Islands Foundation Inc, d/b/a, Enhanced Education; and the C.O.U.Q. Foundation Inc (dissolved in 2012). - Is there another foundation named the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation? Are there any others? - Are these foundations separate legal entities? - What is the reason for using multiple names? - What does C.O.U.Q. stand for? - Which of these foundations has 501(e)(3) tax-exempt status? - Which of these foundations files an annual tax return Form 990 with the IRS? For example, for the J. Epstein Virgin Islands Foundation Inc, I have a tax return from 2002 with the EIN 66-0585379, but none since then. - Could Reuters have copies of any 990s for the J. Epstein Virgin Islands Foundation Inc? I've asked Martin Weinberg for these several times. - Are all these foundations registered in the states where they do business? New York, for example, does not have an entry in its registry for the J. Epstein Virgin Islands Foundation Inc or for any entity with the EIN 66-0585379. - Was the J. Epstein Virgin Islands Foundation Inc ever dissolved or folded into the Epstein Interests foundation (FIN 13-3643429)? - In a Form 990 filed by the Dubin family, there is a description of the J. Epstein Virgin Islands Foundation Inc as a U.S. Virgin Islands nonprofit corporation with 501(c)(3) status. Is this correct? A search of the Virgin Islands Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs did not turn up incorporation papers, and a search of the IRS Select Check database did not turn up this entity. - Have Jeffrey's foundations ever been fined or penalized for failing to comply with state or federal law? Grantee and wealth questions - Jeffrey's website listed "The Oxford Group" as a grant recipient. Reuters was not able to find a charity by that name. Can you tell me more about it? - Jeffrey's website listed the National MS Society as a grant recipient. A spokeswoman there said they have had no direct contact with him. They did find a project on which he and they were joint fenders. Can you tell me more about that relationship? - News organizations including Forbes magazine have questioned the scope and source of Jeffrey's wealth. See here, for example: W://www.forbes.com/sites/clan tmor/2011/02/28/jeffrev-enstein-sez- offender-yes-billionaire-no/ Can Jeffrey tell us more about how he made his money? Is he a billionaire? I am available at if you, Jeffrey or someone else is available to discuss this story. Sincerely, David Ingram Correspondent, Reuters News 2 EFTA01138980
