(2) Once you have the E-2 approval, you have changed your status from O-1 to E-2 in the USA. However, as long as your O-1 visa page (in your passport) is still valid, you can reenter the USA on the O-1 by showing your O-1 visa page upon entry into the USA. You would enter in O-1 status and would still need to visit the Consulate abroad in order to acquire an E-2 visa page and reenter as an E-2 visa holder. However, just be aware that the border officers are reluctant to allow someone into the USA on a visa page that is about to expire soon, and entry is up to them it is never guaranteed.
