McCain Charge Against Obama Lacks Evidence (Washington Post 7/30/08)
By Michael D. Shear and Dan Balz; A01
For four days, Sen. John McCain and his allies have accused Sen. Barack
Obama of snubbing wounded soldiers by canceling a visit to a military
hospital because he could not take reporters with him, despite no evidence
that the charge is true.

With Commercial, McCain Gets Much More Than His Money's Worth (NYT 7/30/08)
By JIM RUTENBERG
The number of times Senator John McCain's new advertisement attacking
Senator Barack Obama for canceling a visit with wounded troops in Germany
last week has been shown fully or partly on local, national and cable
newscasts: well into the hundreds. ...Result for Mr. McCain: a public
relations coup that allowed him to show his toughest campaign advertisement
of the year — one widely panned as misleading — to millions of people,
largely free, through television news media hungry for political news with
arresting visual imagery.

McCain Goes Negative, Worrying Some in G.O.P. (NYT 7/30/08)
By MICHAEL COOPER
In recent days Senator John McCain has charged that Senator Barack Obama
"would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign," tarred him
as "Dr. No" on energy policy and run advertisements calling him responsible
for high gas prices.... By doing so, Mr. McCain is clearly trying to sow
doubts about his younger opponent, and bring him down a peg or two. But some
Republicans worry that by going negative so early, and initiating so many of
the attacks himself rather than leaving them to others, Mr. McCain risks
coming across as angry or partisan in a way that could turn off some
independents who have been attracted by his calls for respectful
campaigning.

Obama has cash to attack McCain's base (Politico 7/30/08)
By: Jeanne Cummings
In nearly every presidential cycle, candidates throw a little money at a
state to try to turn it into a fresh battleground. It almost never
works. But Barack Obama believes his historic nomination gives him more of
an opening to press such a strategy. And what sets him apart from his
predecessors is that he may actually have the money to attack his rival's
base on a broader scale and in a more sustained way than any candidate
before him.

Pentagon-Linked Think Tank At Odds With McCain's Position On Terrorism (TPM
7/29/08)
By Greg Sargent
The McCain campaign has repeatedly attacked Barack Obama as weak on terror,
accusing him of a "September 10th mind-set" and hitting him for favoring a
law-enforcement approach to terrorists as "criminals," rather than seeing
the campaign against terror as a war. But a study released today by a
think-tank that does research for the Pentagon concludes that a
law-enforcement approach, rather than a "war on terror" framing, is
precisely what's needed to effectively counter terrorism -- a position
that's squarely at odds with that of the McCain campaign. From a summary of
the study by the Rand Corporation...

Low-Road Express (NYT 7/30/08)
Well, that certainly didn't take long. On July 3, news reports said Senator
John McCain, worried that he might lose the election before it truly
started, opened his doors to disciples of Karl Rove from the 2004 campaign
and the Bush White House. Less than a month later, the results are on full
display. The candidate who started out talking about high-minded, civil
debate has wholeheartedly adopted Mr. Rove's low-minded and uncivil
playbook.

Analysis: McCain Is Running On Angry (US News & World Report 7/29/08)
By Gloria Berger
...So far, McCain is running largely on angry. That is, the initial game
plan of Hillary the Scold -- in which she claimed that she was the only
candidate who had been "vetted," the only one who was truly "electable," the
only one ready to be commander in chief. As her campaign belittled what it
saw as fawning Obama press coverage, the candidate chided, "Shame on you,
Barack Obama," all but sending her opponent into a corner for a timeout.
McCain is clearly channeling her frustration when he declares that Obama
"would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign." Ouch.

McCain's gaffe a minute on Iraq (Seattle Post-Intelligencer 7/29/08)
By JOHN YOUNG
As any player for the New York Yankees knows, media saturation is great,
until you can't hit a lick, or until you hit a bartender. So, too, with
Barack Obama's coverage during his eight-country trip. What great press,
unless you square to bunt and get beaned. Hence a fascinating juxtaposition
last week. The world press waited and waited, and waited, for the largely
untested Obama to trip over his tongue. Meanwhile, back home before fewer
microphones, battle-tested John McCain was a gaffe waiting to happen.
