GRACE MENG Who is your inspiration for serving in public office? I look up to my grandmother. She was the first one in our family to immigrate to the United States. She didn’t have a college education and had to work twice as hard to provide for her family. The best piece of advice I got from her is to treat people well, learn from others, and be a good listener. Because of her, I became a public interest lawyer and then served in the New York State Assembly, before my time in Congress. We have to make sure that the gains we’ve made under President Obama are secure, especially when Republicans are threatening to strip away health care coverage and propose economic policies that only benefit the very wealthy, which would leave people like my grandmother behind. I have fought, and will continue to fight, to make sure that everyone can succeed in our country. MARK TAKANO How have your previous experiences shaped your approach to serving as a Member of Congress? I was a teacher; community involvement was part of the job description. A lot of what determines a student’s success in school happens outside the classroom. My first run for office was for a seat on the Riverside Community College District’s Board of Trustees, where we worked to improve college education and job training in my community. Now I sit on the Education and Workforce Committee in Congress, where our efforts are on a much larger scale. Democrats have really been on the front lines of pushing for higher education affordability and innovations in green energy jobs. I’m proud to fight for increasing opportunity for all citizens through workforce training in school and beyond. AMI BERA How have your previous experiences shaped your approach to serving as a Member of Congress? During my twenty years in the medical field, I've met people from all walks of life and worked to improve the quality of care for my patients. In Washington, I’ve worked with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to create jobs and deliver results for my friends and neighbors in Sacramento. When I became a doctor, and when I was sworn into Congress, I took an oath to put people first. My job in both positions is to listen to those who need help and to serve them to the best of my ability. As the son of immigrants, I was able to work hard and become a doctor to serve others, and I’m committed to ensuring that future generations, like my daughter, have the same opportunities that I did. MARK TAKAI How has your personal story shaped your views in office? My great grandparents came to this country to work as laborers. They passed down their hard work and values to the rest of my family, and we’ve reaped the rewards. Their story was my inspiration to give back, serving in military, in the National Guard and later in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and later running for office. I get angry when I hear Republican Party leaders calling our community “anchor babies,” advocating for mass deportation of undocumented immigrants or banning and tracking Muslims in our country. My family history is a constant reminder for me to fight against that kind of hateful speech and to increase opportunity for those who don’t have it. DORIS MATSUI What is a particular issue that drives your time in public office? I am a co-chair of the Congressional Women’s Caucus, so protecting women’s health services is always a priority. Almost 40 percent of Asian American women over 40 do not get routine mammograms and 32 percent of those over 18 don’t get routine pap smears. And, almost 70 percent of the overall AAPI community has never been tested for HIV/AIDS. I believe all women should have access to preventive care services. Yet, the Republicans are actively trying to dismantle resources that would close the care gap. The GOP rhetoric and assault on Planned Parenthood and the Affordable Care Act is dangerous for the AAPI community. I am fortunate to have the platform that I do, to bring attention and awareness to these issues. And I intend to do so, as loud as I can and as often as possible.
