For Jeffrey Epstein, from Margaret Minsky
Dear Jeffrey,
I heard from Marvin that you may be coming up to Boston soon, and may even intersect with his music talk at
Tod Machover/Joe Paradiso's MIT Symposium.
We are long overdue for a progress report to you about the Marvin publications effort that you so generously
started supporting during the summer:
In summary, we tapped a rich, and preciously overlooked, thread in Marvin's thinking and writing: his
extraordinary relationship with music. We are building an iPad app constructed around the text and ideas in his
paper "Music, Mind, and Meaning" atop a rich database of new documentary interviews and musical
improvisation sessions, new filmed discussions between Marvin and widely-known composers and musicians,
archival footage, recordings of Marvin's improvisations and compositions, and music learning experiences
designed with Marvin. We have filmed several interviews, we have identified a publication platform for the iPad,
and we are actively recording and digitizing music. On the enabling side, we have added two more generous
charter sponsors, and we have a new 501(c)3 fiscal agent who is donating services in-kind and who will go the
distance with us as we raise the rest of the funds to complete the project.
Below the line, I include an expanded description of the project, as well as attaching our full proposal (which
includes video clips from the project's Marvin interviews), and a pdf of his stunning 1981 paper "Music, Mind,
and Meaning".
Since you personally already know the depth of Marvin's musical life, we are eager to hear your responses and
further advice!!!
all the best, and many thanks,
-Margaret
Cynthia Solomon and I started working with Marvin this summer when he asked us to help on publishing a
collection of his papers. The project morphed to focus on the least-known area of his life and work, his
extraordinary relationship with music. Music is by no means Marvin's hobby, it is literally his inner life. My
father has a very rare ability to improvise fugues, and does this playfully all the time. He was a musical

improviser/composer prodigy as a child, and while he was busy becoming a scientist, he also was a serious
student of music as an undergraduate at Harvard. He plays and improvises, mostly in the styles of Bach and of
Beethoven, the composer he admires above all, and whenever there's a piano nearby, eventually he will be there
making up music.
Our plan is to make an iPad app, atop a documentary base about the role of music in Marvin's life and thinking.

We are filming new interviews and documentary materials based around the themes (pun intended) in his paper
"Music, Mind, and Meaning". We are filming Marvin improvising at the keyboard, in discussions with a Teresa
Marvin Nakra about music, and with other luminaries and in resonant locations in his musical life. We have done
four filming sessions, and are planning several more.
I ATTACHED: the Marvin Music Project full proposal, it includes links to video clips from our first filmed
