Hello All,Unfortunately, our tracker was turned away at the door from
today's town hall meeting. It was a closed employee-only event. But here's
the good news: We captured the event streaming online. Below are our notes.
BIG HIGHLIGHTS:
- Touts the Volt / electric cars as 'the future'; says green technology
will be a boon to American economy
- Brings up his comments that the old automotive jobs aren't coming back
to Michigan, "but new jobs are coming back"
- Says "I'm not too much of an expert" on WTO arbitration on free trade
- Promises that the next toy that comes into USA from China with
poison/arsenic on it "will be the last toy" that comes to USA from China.
- Walks back rhetoric on safety of offshore drilling
- Says in Iraq "We have succeeded--I'm not saying we are succeeding--we
have succeeded"
- Repeats "I know how to win wars"
- Woman asks McCain about pre-emptive strike, decision to invade Iraq,
was "bomb bomb Iran" a joke, etc.
- McCain says we were justified to invade Iraq because we thought
Saddam had WMDs *b**ut* that was history, and that's for historians to
debate.
- Says A-lQaeda will increase "spectacular attacks" 'as we get into the
campaign season'
- Hits Obama for this being the "first time" he's sat down with Petraeus,
gone to Afghanistan; continues to hit him for advocating a strategy that
would have lost us Iraq
- OTHER TOPICS: Offshore drilling, abortion, cap-and-trade, housing
crisis, health care crisis, free trade

*Warren, MI - McCain Employee Town Hall ** **07/18/08*
(Disclaimer: The following are notes, not direct quotes. If you'd like a
quotable transcript or video of any part below, please email us.)
BACKGROUND DETAIL
- Cong. Candace Miller gives introductory remarks: praises GM, comments
on Chevy Volt, the "future" of GM
- 'Here, after WWII, which the Sen knows very well...'
- 'We know he loves America more than he loves himself or anything
else', praises McCain's "optimistic vision" for America
- At Tech Center at GM
- Closed event, employees and credential press only
Opening Remarks*
- thanks Cong. Miller and audience, asks technicians to turn up lights so
he can see the participants
- town halls are super-important; thanks
- thank you for being in heartland, you made history in WW2 when you
literally became the "arsenal of democracy"
- now we face another challenge: radical Islamic extremism. We're sending
$$$$ to people who don't like us, a lot of that to pay for what we put in
our cars
- jokes Mr. Lutz not a very good briefer, also not a very good pilot.
I probably shouldn't say anything about that.
- Volt is the future. We have to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil.
We can, we have the best and most hard-working workers in the world in the
US and in Detroit.
- That's not the only step we need to take.
- I call it the Lexington Project, it has to do with alternative energy,
the Volt, conservation, we've got to drill offshore. 'Is there someone here
who doesn't believe we should exploit our own oil' sources? [someone raises
hand] ok, we can have that discussion.
- When President lifted exec order, the futures price went down.
- I'm glad Mr. Pickens is advertising here. I share his values and belief
in his program. Not exactly but.
- MI generates 26% of its energy from nuclear power plants. It is safe.
We've never had an accident on the Navy ships. Do we store and reprocess
sent nuclear fuel? The French reprocess it. It was a decision by Carter that
said we wouldnt reprocess it. Is it the answer? No, but it's clean and it
won't take us as long to reprocess it as theyre saying. The French are doing
it in 5; why would it take us 10?
- A key part will be that over there [the Volt]. We should give them a
tax credit for that purchase, because we need to encourage.
- We need to unlock the gridlock in Washington. Yesterday Congress went
into recess; they never miss recess or a pay raise. In Senate, they're
gridlocked on offshore drilling. Pelosi has announced there won't be a vote
on it. If you want a voice in Washington, you don't have one because they've
put partisanship over it. Congress approval at 9%. And Americans have
figured it out, they're working for their party and each other and putting
their country above. I will do that. I put country first, that's why I
wasn't voted Ms. Congeniality: on climate change, on torturing people in our
custody, on campaign finance.
- There'll be times when we disagree on issues. Most likely: trade. I
believe in free trade, but I also believe in education and re-training. We
need to put programs into community colleges. We all know a job is more than
a job. If it's an older worker, I'll subsidized their income while they take
a lower-paying job and get re-trained. We cannot have people's lives end at
too early a stage.
- I came here early in the campaign and said the automotive jobs aren't
coming back. But I said new jobs are coming back. This new technology
will create 10s of thousands of jobs over time because there are going to be
imitators all over the world. We can't let the arsenal of democracy
disappear into the mist.
- This new breakthrough, this new technology--"I run out of hyperbole
obviously"
- I know how to win wars and I hate wars because I have experience with
them. I know how to make this nation secure and prosperous. And this is
going to be a tough campaign.
- And we may be up late on the East Coast saying the results from MI
aren't in yet and the election might turn on it.
- We'll often disagree, but that's good, healthy.
- And I put my country first. And i once had the opportunity-- in the POW
camp, I had a choice to go home early because my father was a high-ranking
admiral. But there was a Mexican-American, Everett Alvarez, and he was there
first, and I couldn't leave early. I put my country first.

Question & Answer
- 1Q) Different states trying to set standards for fuel economy vs.
national standards?
- MCCAIN: I'm torn. I'm a federalist. E.g. on offshore
drilling--states should decide. But it's complicated because every state
doesn't manufacture cars and they don't stay within state. I
want Rick and
the Big 3 to sit down and come up with a proposal. I support states being
able to do that but I don't see why we can't work this out. In
Congress, we
feel it's our role to set mileage standards. I think that the
Volt may make
this discussion academic.
- 2Q) As a catholic male, I'm adamantly pro-life. Can I count on you to
fight for the rights of the unborn (mentions embryonic stem cell, cloning,
abortion, etc)?
- MCCAIN: Yes you can. The noblest words "All of us are created
equal... happiness" which applies to rights of unborn. I have a long and
consistent record of supporting them. When Sen *Obama was in IL state
legislature, he voted against a ban on partial-birth abortion,
"one of the
most gruesome" procedures.* I have a long record of voting and
advocacy. "I'm proud to be called right-to-life."
- 3Q) When is the govt going to stick up for us in the automotive
industry, who stood up for the people after 9/11?
- MCCAIN: First, I support a tax credit for people who buy a Volt and
other things that put us on path to energy independence. Govt
should invest
in pure R&D, especially in development of a battery. Straight-talk: you
can't compete with other manufacturer if you lay people off and
pay them for
the rest of their life. So I will do everything I can. I will do
what I can
to make this technology better-refined and less expensive. The
problem with
the Volt is it's too expensive. The cell phone had that problem
though. The
market fixes that. I will do what I can with education and re-training.
Americans are sitting around the kitchen table worried about getting laid
off. And one of the reasons I supported the gas tax holiday is
because it's
the lowest-income Americans that are paying the most, driving
the furthest
in the least-efficient cars. This industry and this company in particular
can compete with any in the world. They're the "best of America"
- 4Q) GM produces most E85 cars, which is super-efficient. What would you
do to support and make more available?
- MCCAIN I'd like to see us make every car in America flex-fueled.
Brazilians have done that. They use sugar cane. I don't support ethanol
subsidies becuase it distorts the market. I'm all for
encouraging flex fuels
in all cars, that every gas station has a pump has a E85 on it, I'm for
having sugar, ethanol, corn, etc. I didn't support imported ethanol.
- 5Q) Is climate change really proven? And how will cap-and-trade hurt
GM?
- MCCAIN: I think there's significant evidence to show that climate
change is happening. Even if I'm wrong--and I think that I'm not
because of
what I've seen and the preponderence (vs unanimity) of scientific
evidence... and I've traveled aroudn the world usually at your
expense--then
we go ahead with the Volt, which BTW will create 700k new jobs.
It's my view
that the new light bulb, that nuclear power, that green
technologies (incl.
solar--which now are paper-thin... there are enormous advances in
technology). They've developed an electric automobile. It costs
$100k, but
the next will cost $60k. Point is part of the future is based on green
technologies, we're the best. Cap-and-trade won't be bad: We'll still
improve the economy. Green tech will help us lead economically.
- FOLLOWUP: If we start to regulate CO2 emissions, in the short-term a
place like this will suffer, no? Other technologies yes will leave us
cleaner, but what about the short-term?
- MCCAIN: I've had numerous convos, and I think we need to adjust
those standards so it doesn't kill off the manufacturers. We had another
emissions problem: acid rain. The cap-and-trade system worked there. The
Europeans used it and made massive errors, and I think we can avoid those.
- three options (1) status quo-- not an option (2) carbon tax--
everyone will see a rise in taxes and I don't want that or (3) cap and
trade-- I'd rather see competition than tax. Whenever you see
that 3-letter
word t-a-x, run the other way and grab your wallet
- 6Q) - Gas prices has risen and so has fuel economy. Housing
market hasn't seen the same advancements. What about energy conservation in
people's houses?
- MCCAIN: Government could increase standards in federal buildings.
Govt should offer tax credits to people or builders who make more
energy efficient homes. Govt also needs to encourage energy
conservation. Also, we need to make sure people can stay in
their homes--I
want you to be able to get a 30-year FHA guaranteed
fixed-interest loan at
the new value of your home. Then incentivize energy efficiency.
- FOLLOWUP: I built a new home, I can't sell my old home and was forced
into a jumbo loan, which is impossible to pay. MI passed a law,
but you need
to make all jumbo loans the same rate.
- MCCAIN: You need to be able to make payments at your home's new
rate. If we dont' keep people in their homes, then that's the
essence of the
American dream. Also, we need to fix the system? 60-page documents-why?
*Why shouldn't we go after predatory lenders? Those people ought to be
punished.*
- 7Q) Health care. 16 years ago there was little out-of-pocket expenses
and not there's a ton. What would you do about heatlh care crisis? and what
do you think about socializing health care (e.g. Canada)?
- MCCAIN: This is one of the most compelling issues for long-term
solutions. It's not the qualithank you of health care, but cost and
availability. In Canada or England or whatever, the wealthy
people come here
for procedures. We need outcome-based treatment for chronically ill
patients. We need medical malpractice reform, community clinics, GAPs for
uninsurables (federal govt make a significant contribution and
states join
together to establish risk pools and get people insurance they deserve).
- And finally, fitness and wellness; rising rates of child obesity. I
met a kid in FL who lost 97lbs on Shaq's plan. I'd like to see
athletes to
go around and encourage kids, parents should know school lunch and PE
programs. Government should reward people for doing things like joining
health clubs.
- I'm confident will wean off foreign oil. I think we can do the same
thing with health care. *There are too many without insurance--some of
them by choice*, but not most, and that's not right.
- 8Q) When we source to a Canadian supplier, Canadian law requires that
they must go to a Canadian source to get secondary parts and that doesn't
seem fair? What would you do to help us in that area of free trade?
- MCCAIN: I would take them right to those arbitration panels. I think
it might be in violation of WTO panels too, but *"I'm not too much of
an expert"* in that area. I don't believe that people should have
advantages over American workers and products. *I also want to tell
you that the next toy that comes into USA from China with
poison/arsenic on
it will be the last toy that comes to USA from China.*
*
*
- --lady prepares to ask question about offshore drilling. MCCAIN jokes
"boooo"
- 9Q) You keep proposing alternative energy but you're peppering it with
comments about offshore drilling.
- MCCAIN: *There are offshore drilling sites off TX and Louis. that
have done very well against hurricanes. I'm not saying there
will never be
another oil spill, we all remember Santa Barbara and Exxon
Valdeez. I think
we can do it well* without killing our environment. Drills can go in
at a slant. And i think we need to balance it against the security
threat of sending money to foreign oil powers.
- FOLLOWUP: I'd like to see more emphasis on the renewable resources
that we have out there.
- MCCAIN: I'm supportive of and the govt is doing a lot of R&D on wind
and solar, etc. But we cant be as reliant on that as Mr. Pickens
thinks. It
doesn't meet our energy demands.
- 10Q)* We preemptively went into Iraq and not 1 terrorist came from
Iraq. And now there's Iran. And you made the joke "bomb bomb bomb Iran"--I
hope that was a joke. And OSama's still running around. How do you feel
about preemptive strikes? Going into countries where we don't like the
leader? Iran? N Korea? And you said you know how to win wars. We lost
Vietnam, you were there. And do we want a President who wins wars; is that
a goal?*
- MCCAIN: Thank you. You ask a very profound question and I
appreciate it. Al Qaeda is active all over the world--some evidence
there's some in America, definitely some in Europe. They're an
evil that's
hard to encompass. they behead people and post the video. and they're
dedicated to destroying everythign we stand for. I believe we
were justified
going into Iraq based on the intelligence we had at the time and Saddam's
history.* But that was history, and that's for historians to
debate.*But we had a losing strategy and I went over and said we had
to change it.
And they said I was going to end my campaign, and that strategy has
succeeded. And I'd be happy to give you all the data ot back that up. Is
this a final victory? no. They're on their heels but theyre not gone;
*"We have succeeded--I'm not saying we are succeeding--we have
succeeded"* and we will win--if we don't do what Obama wants us to do
which is set up an arbitrary timetable. Obama is now sitting down with
Petraeus FOR THE FIRST TIME and going ot afghanistan FOR THE
FIRST TIME and
i am "astonished" that he would propose his policy BEFORE going on the
mission. If we had done what obama had wanted, we would have a wider war.
Now he says he'll assess the situation--there wouldn't be a situation to
assess because we wouldve lost the war, if we had done what obama wanted,
which was not to do the surge.
- Iran is dedicated to extinction of Israel. I want sanctions, but
Russia is blocking them in the UN. So we need to get together with our
European allies including France and do it. Their economy is weak. WE can
never allow a 2nd holocaust. We can modify their behavior. And we need to
consider every possible option before we consider a military option.
- America has made great sacrifice and it grieves us all. If US failed
and were defeated, we'd face that . {Matthew Stanley story} I
make that same
commitment to the 4000 other families that have sacrificed. I
put my coutnry
first. I knew it was hard to send 30k more
- "I hope that at least partially answers your question." Thank
you. *[doesn't
offer a follow-up]*
- 11Q) What would you say to people that say that there were never WMDs
in Iraq (my son is there now)? And what about McClellan's views?
- MCCAIN: Every intelligence nation in the world believed he had them.
So you can't say its some massive conspiracy. And Saddam had said he was
intent on acquiring them. And there were humanitarian concerns.
I agree with
Petraues. *But that success could be reversed very easily. I believe
that as we get into the campaign season they will step up and do more of
these "spectacular" attacks, suicide bombs. They'll try to
undermine Maliki
government.* People who are saying that the Maliki government isn't
working--which it is--are the same people that said that the surge would
fail. I will make sure that we get out according to the conditions on the
ground. I've been through many wars and I have the judgment and
experience
to lead our country through us.
- Thank you for leading us through this great experiment. There will be
others--electric cars and hybrids--but this is one of the greatest. I'm
proud of you and I will do everything to make sure you succeed, not just for
you but for the good of the country and of the world.
