KEY BLOCK----- Hello Big Campaign, Just off the phone with our tracker Greg who is on the ground in Nashua, NH today. Below are the notes from our call. *BIG HIGHLIGHTS:* - Heated exchange on Social Security when the president of a retiree org. asked McCain why he supports SS privatization; McCain said "'I am not for privatizing social security -- never have been, never will be." - Prior to the question, McCain banters with the retiree about how old they are - McCain criticizes economists for all the things they didn't foresee, e.g. burst of the dot com bubble, housing crisis *NASHUA, NH - McCain Town Hall Meeting 06/12/08* * Background Details: * - Sen. John Sununu opened the event - Sen. Warren Rudman (R-NH) spoke and introduced McCain - McCain entered the stage to the 'Rocky' theme music - Gov. Walter Peterson - 600 people in a gym - pretty packed. All white. - About 20 protesters outside the event, protesting against 'third term of Bush.' [no tracker footage]. - Usual press, national networks, traveling and local affiliates - Staffers (including press aides) were basically all local - doesn't seem to have travelling staff? - Cindy and Meghan were not there. - Our tracker had no trouble getting in the event. * Speech Highlights: Opening Remarks - *Promised wouldn't tell any corny jokes, but it's hard to break old habits - 'I love the state of New Hampshire and I can't thank you enough.' - Acknowledges 'Welcome Home' sign. - "I'm so happy to be back. I'm so happy to be back." - Touts 102 town hall meetings. - Says I need you this November. - Underscores apparent commitment to climate change - Says campaign is all about putting country first, above all else - Recognizes ONE and Divided We Fail - Thanks veterans and asks them to stand - 'This campaign is about reform, prosperity and peace.' - Right kind of change, not going back to the failed policies of 60s and 70s, not the second term of Jimmy Carter ('I thought that was a pretty good line') - HEALTH CARE: I have a plan that will put the power in the hands of families and not the federal government - RENEWABLE ENERGY: That's our mission and we can do it - GAS TAX HOLIDAY: If you want to call it a gimmick, fine. That is coming from the economists who didn't see the sub-prime mortgage meltdown and dot-com meltdown - IRAQ - I hate war - I knew what the right strategy was - We are winning. We are succeeding. - Obama still doesn't acknowledge that we're succeeding in Iraq. - I'll bring 'em home. We'll do it and we'll do it the right way. - My highest priority *Question and Answer: * Q1) What will we do to protect ourselves from southern invasion? What will we do to protect value of US dollar? MCCAIN: Secure the borders, temporary workers, get 12mil who are here illegally in line, deport the millions who have committed crimes, biometric IDs You're right; when the dollar is devalued, the price of gas goes up. We have to talk up the dollar. The fundamental problem is out-of-control spending. Follow-up: Will you prosecute those employers who hire illegals? MCCAIN: Yes, sir. But only after, the employer is able to secure temporary workers. We can expect small business owners to be the INS. COMMENT - Thanks for helping to set up the first homeless veteran shelter. Thank you. Q 2) Father is vietnam vet -- has been to many nations teaching people how to take care of their own. Will you increase that teaching.? MCCAIN: Yes. That is the point of the surge. Tell your father thank you for serving. Q 3) I'd like to highlight Janet Quilty -- mom, of son who gave his arm and leg in Iraq. MCCAIN: Thank you for his sacrifice. Follow up: In your book, you quote Mo Udall. My family is getting hammered by oil prices. Any relief on the way? MCCAIN: In the short-term, we will see a decrease of barrel costs. People looking into the unnecessary increase of oil. But like JFK did with going to the moon, I challenge America to decrease our dependence on foreign oil. Follow-up: Thank you. That was the answer I was looking for. MCCAIN: Senator Obama said he didn't mind the cost increase in gas. He said it was just a little too quick. And we need to use nuclear energy. And Obama's plan doesn't have any of that - it doesn't mention nuclear energy at all. Q 4) What are you going to do to help our education system -- especially special needs children? MCCAIN: No Child Left Behind is a good start -- step in the right direction. Let's fix NCLB, let's not scrap it. We'll work together, learn the lessons of it. Also, fully fund the special programs that are federally fund. I believe that we can fix the NCLB. New Orleans had to start from square one and there are now 30 charter schools. New Orleans is doing better because of choice. Choice and competition is the answer. Follow-up: You need to look at each individual child. It's impossible to meet the expectations of NCLB. MCCAIN: Why don't we reward good teachers. Give teachers incentives to do a good job. Q 5) I'm a health care voter. Many insurance companies don't cover those with a pre-existing condition. What will you do to cover discrimination of this sort and will you pledge to do so? MCCAIN: We will have to establish GAP - Government Approved Programs. Bring the governors together and come up with a plan to cover those with pre-existing conditions. We are going to have to have these GAP's to expand risk pools to cover the uninsurables. Follow-up: I'm worried about cancer survivors. MCCAIN: I'd like to change the law so people can shop all over the US. I'll give them $5k to shop for it. I'd like to give people choices, allow them to go across state lines. Follow-up: Are you going to allow people to supercede Michelle's law? MCCAIN: I want people to have the ability to be able to go across state lines. Health care is the elephant in the room. Thanks for bringing it up. Q 6) Thank you. I'm a Massachusetts resident. Obama said college education is a birth right for all Americans. I have a limited income and I'm not able to pay for my kids to attend. I have concern with Senator Obama's idea -- that college is a birth right. What I fear is that the academic prestige of institutions will be compromised. MCCAIN: We have to make a college education affordable and accessible. Not everyone has to go to college -- but those who want to and have the credentials should be able to do so without taking on the burden of huge loans. Q 7) You've stated you're in support of privatization of SS. Why would you put people on the roulette wheel of the market? MCCAIN: Quips: I can relate to seniors' issues. It's their $$$. I'm not for privatization of SS. I just want workers to put a small amount into an acct. 'I am not for privatizing social security -- never have been, never will be.' Reagan and Tip O'Neil fixed it. We can do it again. We have to come together, not fight about it to solve it. I commit to you that I'll fix it. Q 8) As a Christian, what would you do for this country? MCCAIN: We're a Judeo-Christian nation, but we accept other faiths. Q 9) Should we do more for veterans? MCCAIN: Health care for vets. Give them plastic card so they can get their treatment at private facilities. Q 10) What would your Supreme Court look like? MCCAIN: Justice John Roberts - that is my ideal guy. I will appoint strict-constructionist judges. Obama was against confirmation of Roberts and Alito. I voted to confirm Ginsburg, etc. because they were qualified. Q 11) What are you going to do about over-spending? MCCAIN: Cut wasteful pork-barrel and earmark spending, etc. Q 12) McCain asked from person from ONE campaign to speak. Person spoke about ONE, then asked about bill currently in Congress to provide AIDS assistance. MCCAIN: Thanks Sununu for his advocacy on the issue. I would support this bill. Says Pres Bush and Laura Bush deserve credit for their efforts on this issue. McCain brings up farm bill. ONE campaign representative thanks McCain for his veto of farm bill since American agricultural subsidies distort foreign markets and hurt farmers in other countries. Q 13) Concerned parent asked if the government could do more to prevent stores from selling violent video games to children, even if they're with their parents. MCCAIN: It's up to the parents. There's an "utter evil," which is child porn on the Internet - we need to work to prevent it. Follow-up: What is your strategy for dealing with the "liberal" mainstream media, which likes Obama and ignores you? MCCAIN: That's how it is in the media But joint town halls would allow us to bypass the media and communicate directly with voters. McCain concludes with trope that he has a record of always putting his country before himself. -- Sara DuBois Deputy Director - Tracking/Media Monitoring Progressive Media USA [email protected] 202-609-7681 (office) 410-967-7306 (cell) --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the "big campaign" group.
