To mark the 25th anniversary of German unification, the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is pleased to invite you to a conversation with Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland and Transatlantic Academy Bosch Public Policy Fellow Ivan Krastev, moderated by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius. The discussion will examine the legacy of German unification and the events of 1989 to 1991 which brought an end to the Cold War, the subsequent development of Europe’s political and security architecture, the challenges which the Euro-Atlantic order faces today, and the future prospects for a Europe whole, free, and at peace.
Ambassador Victoria Nuland has been assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs since September 2013, where she is responsible for diplomatic relations with 50 countries in Europe and Eurasia, as well as with NATO, the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Previously, Ambassador Nuland served as the U.S. Department of State spokesperson, as special envoy for conventional armed forces in Europe from 2010 to 2011, and served on the faculty of the National War College from 2008 to 2009. She was also the 18th United States permanent representative to NATO from 2005 to 2008. As a career foreign service officer, Ambassador Nuland was principal deputy national security advisor to the vice president from 2003 to 2005, U.S. deputy permanent Representative to NATO from 2000 until 2003, and chief of staff to the deputy secretary of state from 1993 to 1996. Earlier in her career, she covered Russian internal politics at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, served on the Soviet desk in Washington, helped to open the first U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, worked in the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and served in Guangzhou, China. She speaks Russian and French, and received a bachelor’s from Brown University.
Ivan Krastev is a Bosch Public Policy fellow at the Transatlantic Academy and the chairman of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia. He is also a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. From 2013 to 2014 Krastev was a Richard von Weizsäcker fellow at the Robert Bosch Stiftung in Berlin. He is a founding board member of the European Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the advisory board of the ERSTE Foundation, and a member of the Advisory Council of the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA). He is also associate editor of Europe's World and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Democracy and Transit – Europäische Revue. From 2004 to 2006 Krastev served as the executive director of the International Commission on the Balkans chaired by the former Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato. From 2005 to 2011 he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Bulgarian Edition of Foreign Policy and was a member of the Council of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, London. He has held fellowships at St. Antony’s College in Oxford; the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington, D.C.; the Collegium Budapest; the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin; the Institute of Federalism at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland; and the Remarque Institute at New York University.
David Ignatius is the author of a bi-weekly column on global politics, economics, and international affairs for The Washington Post. Ignatius joined the Post in 1986 as editor of its Sunday “Outlook” section. He became foreign editor in 1990, supervising the paper’s Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. In 1993 he became the assistant managing editor for business news. Prior to joining The Washington Post, Ignatius spent ten years as a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, where he covered the steel industry, the U.S. Justice Department, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the U.S. Senate, while simultaneously serving as Middle East chief diplomatic correspondent. In addition to reporting, Ignatius served as a Fisher Family Fellow to the Future of Diplomacy Project at Harvard Kennedy School in 2010 and was a visiting faculty member during the spring of 2012. He is currently a senior fellow for the Future of Diplomacy Project at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University and a board member at The German Marshall Fund of the United States.
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) strengthens transatlantic cooperation on regional, national, and global challenges and opportunities in the spirit of the Marshall Plan.
