McCain's Visit to Area, Reveals Some Tough Questions and Hard Answers
Highlights No Clip:
1. CBS - CRAIG FERGUSON: "John McCain has been accused of steeling
policy ideas from Wikipedia. Which is ridiculous! Everybody knows McCain
doesn't know how to use the internet! How could you even accuse him of that?
And Barack Obama today pledged that he won't raise taxes on anyone over the
age of 70. And McCain said Obama was just pandering to the youth vote. The
youngsters got to pay tax!"
2. WHTM-ABC 27 - Harrisburg PA - KRISTEN OLSEN: "Harley Davidson is
laying off 270 production jobs, how do you plan to get jobs back to people
that you saw right out there in that townhall meeting?
MCCAIN: "We got to keep taxes low, we've got to provide stimulus to, for
investment and research and development."

*Evangelicals See McCain As Only Option, Looking At Who He Chooses as
V.P.*(FNC 08-13-08 7:30am)
GRETCHEN CARLSON: 83 days until the election, since 1988 evangelicals have
been the second most reliable block for the Republicans but will things
change this time around? […] Are the evangelicals going to rally around John
McCain or will they take a listen to Barack Obama?
DR. LAND: I think they're going to largely support John McCain. The latest
TIME poll shows that 70 percent are planning on voting for McCain, and 19
percent are planning on voting for Obama, and the rest are undecided. The
question is going to be how many evangelicals will turn out to vote? *Most
of them are either going to vote for McCain or they're not going to vote.* A
small minority are going to vote for Obama. And the reason is quite simple,
it's very difficult for someone who is as radically pro-choice as Barack
Obama is to gain much hearing with evangelicals. And that's why he's doing
not any better and in some polls a little worse than John Kerry did with
evangelicals in 2004.
GRETCHEN: […] But here's the question I have for you this morning Dr. Land,
because, the prevailing thought process right now among the political
pundits is *evangelicals, they're going to vote for John McCain no matter
what because they don't have anyone else to vote for.* *But what you're
saying this morning is that his V.P. pick will still be extremely important
as far as getting evangelicals to come to the polls.*
LAND: *That will be the most important decision that John McCain makes in
this entire campaign. The question is, will evangelicals be energized in a
pro-life vice presidential pick will help to reassure them that his judicial
nominees will be the right picks*, that they'll be pro-life like Roberts and
Alito. It will reassure them, give them a confidence level, and it will have
an enormous impact on turnout. If he picks a pro-life vice presidential
candidate it will gin up the turnout. If he picks a pro-choice candidate it
will deeply depress it and deflate it.
CARLSON: If he goes for Tom Ridge then, former Homeland Security Chief, he's
not pro-life. And if he goes for Joe Lieberman, which some people are
rumoring that he's going to do an out-of-the-box pick to try to get
independents, what you're saying is that evangelicals may just stay home.
LAND: A lot of them will. A lot of them will. And I love Joe Lieberman. Joe
Lieberman wrote the forward to my book, I think he's a great guy, he'd make
a great Secretary of Defense, but he's pro-choice so that means he can't be
vice president.

*McCain Opposing Energy Compromise Legislation Even Before It Is Proposed or
Debated* (FNC 08/13/08 10:07am)
MEGYN KELLY: John McCain campaigning for cash today in Michigan […] Let's
talk energy, they are still working on an energy compromise on Capital Hill.
McCain, not too in love with the compromise being proposed. Tell us.
JAMES ROSEN: Yeah, this is the compromise forged by the so-called "gang of
ten", five senators on either side of the political aisle, and *in blunt
terms Senator McCain is not committed to this compromise at all.* He has, of
course, shifted policy this year when gas prices have been so punishing, and
come out in favor of expanded offshore drilling. This proposed compromise,
which hasn't even been circulated as formal legislation yet, provides for
some limited new, offshore drilling. Off the shores of Virginia, the
Carolinas, and Georgia. But this gang of ten compromise would also repeal
some tax breaks that the major oil companies now enjoy. In an interview with
Fox News chief political correspondent, Carl Cameron, just yesterday,
Senator McCain sidestepped a direct question about whether he supports those
provisions.
MCCAIN: I don't support any increase in taxes. *But the point is, the oil
companies are ready to drill, they don't need any tax breaks to do that. Not
with the price of oil being in where it is. All they need to do is be
allowed to drill.*
ROSEN: […] McCain also questioned this conventional wisdom that any offshore
drilling would take several years to impact on domestic gas prices.
KELLY: […] Apparently McCain in that interview also defended his reputation
as a maverick?
ROSEN: That's right. This has come under some attack from the democrats and
from Senator Obama's campaign Megyn, and Senator McCain yesterday repeated a
favorite line of his saying, that he was never elected Ms. Congeniality.

*Susan Eisenhower Claims many Republicans Scared of Third Bush Term* (CNN
08/13/08 07:29am)
SUSAN EISENHOWER: I had an avalanche of email after that endorsement. *Many
moderate Republicans said that they're terrified of having a third Bush
term. John McCain has been a real supporter of virtually everything that
the Bush White House has wanted, and I think the American people feel
desperate for a change, especially in understanding we have to restore our
position abroad.*

*Mamma Mia! John McCain the Dancing Queen?* (FNC 08/13/08 7:45am)
STEVE DOOCY: Let's take a look at John McCain's favorite songs.
GRETCHEN CARLSON: All right, Dancing Queen!
DOOCY: Is number one on John McCain's list.
[McCain's Favorite Songs List Includes:
*1. **Dancing Queen – Abba*
*2. **Blue Bayou – Roy Orbison*
*3. **Take a Chance on Me – Abba*
*4. **If We Make It… - Merle Haggard*
*5. **As Time Goes By – Dooley Wilson]*
BRIAN KILMEADE: I know he's kidding, this can not be serious?!
CARLSON: His wife picked the list!?
KILMEADE: Is this true? You can't have your wife pick your own list! He's
John McCain he can't have dancing queen!
CALSON: Come on! Maybe he has a little Swedish boy in him!?
[…]
DOOCY: There's one thing the two candidates have in common. One artist, who
do you think that would be? Frank Sinatra. They both have a Frank Sinatra
song on there.

*Local Harrisburg, PA News Covers McCain's Visit to Area, Reveals Some Tough
Questions and Hard Answers* (WHTM –ABC 27 – Harrisburg, PA 08/12/08 7:00pm)
JOHN MCCAIN: There's no doubt that Pennsylvania will be a battleground
state, I think we will be up late and I think every vote will count."
DENNIS OWENS: Well, the fight for our votes went into high gear today as
republican presidential candidate John McCain came to town. […]
VALERIE RITCHETT: McCain held his first major public event in the mid-state.
OWENS: Analysts say if McCain wants to win Pennsylvania, he needs to win big
in the middle of the state.. today, he visited York to meet voters-- and get
them fired up to go to the polls. Blaring music and a rolling bus delivered
John McCain into York he calls it the Straight Talk Express and he took a
few straight shots at congress for not fixing America's energy dependence.
McCain wants more oil drilling and more nuclear.
MCCAIN: We've been sailing nuclear ships around the world for sixty years
with nuclear power plants on them and we've never had an accident.
OWENS: He called for sanctions on Russia for invading Georgia and said this
when a soldier asked about the war in Iraq,
MCCAIN: By the end of the next four years we will be largely out of Iraq and
we'll be out because we will have won. Not because of a date for withdrawal.
OWENS: McCain didn't duck tough questions and gave tough answers. He told a
public school teacher he favors school choice for parents, he told a farmer
he doesn't like farm subsidies, and an eye doctor that he's against
nationalized health care.
MCCAIN: If you like a government run health care system go to Canada or
England before you decide that's what you want.
OWENS: But the truly conservative in the mid-state still have doubts about
this moderate. Listen to this question.
QUESTIONER: We want to know if it is in you to become a passionate and
forceful leader with a conservative agenda to fight the lure of socialistic
programs promoted by Senator Obama and the democrats?
OWENS: McCain answered with one word and a chuckle.
MCCAIN: Yes [laughter]
OWENS: McCain did elaborate that he'll appoint conservative judges to the
Supreme Court. He knows conservative voters will be judging him and he needs
their votes.
DEBORAH WENTZ: I thought it was wonderful and I wish more young people could
have been here to hear it.
JACK NICHOLAS: I like this town hall format because it gives people a chance
to hear him speak off the cuff.
[…]
OWENS: And after the town hall meeting, Senator McCain did not leave York
right away.
RITCHETT: That's right, he sat down for a one-one-one interview with our
Kristin Thorne. He told her that he knows Pennsylvania is going to be a big
tough win. But McCain says he's going to campaign hard here. He hopes former
Governor Tom Ridge will help him get the votes. The governor has been
touring the mid-state with McCain for the past few days. And McCain would
not say if Ridge is on his short list for a running mate. But he says if
elected he may ask Ridge to serve in a homeland security capacity.
MCCAIN: I would certainly call on Governor Ridge to help out in the next
administration because he's literally a national treasure.
RITCHETT: McCain wouldn't say when he'll announce his v-p. He says it's been
a tough process picking a running mate because there are so many qualified
people. And after his appearance in York, McCain also visited Lancaster
County. […]
AMY KEHM: John McCain's mid-state tour is officially over today. He flew out
of Lancaster airport about an hour and half ago. Before that though, Senator
McCain made a surprise visit to a really interesting group of potential
constituents, high school football players. Interesting choice as many of
them can't even vote yet. But John McCain took to the field anyway, at
Manheim Central High School. It was day two of football practice. The
players, of course, are preparing for the upcoming school year. McCain joked
that maybe he should give a long speech so the guys didn't have to practice
so hard. That got a few laughs. The candidate didn't talk much about himself
or politics. He briefly mentioned his time in Vietnam as a prisoner of war,
telling the players that "team work" helped he and other prisoners survive.
He encouraged them to also work as a team and to have fun.
MCCAIN: I'm proud of all of you. Don't forget to study. You also have to
graduate. Don't forget that okay? Most importantly, look forward to this
forward to this season. Enjoy every single game, every single game, every
single moment."
