KEY BLOCK----- *Main Topics:* McBush, energy, terrorism and economy, McCain's military roots, AUFC's Bush Bus *Summary of Shift:* President Bush today spoke about Zimbabwe and met with the president of Iraq. Ralph Nader's comments on Obama's treatment of race and class were a source of much conversation between panelists and pundits. With Hillary and Bill Clinton's support now behind Obama, pundits spent a vast amount of time on how the upcoming Unity event will go. Almost all programs and stations dedicated a noteworthy chunk of time to Barack Obama's iPod content, recently published in *Rolling Stone*. Highlights 1) McBush a. CNN: Jeanne Moost compares McCain's and Bush's computer illiteracy b. CNN: Panel has a few yucks at McBush's expense 2) CNN: McCain's energy proposal does not sit well with Nevadan voters 3) CNN: *Fortune* editor expresses surprise at McCain's opinion on #1 threat to economy 4) MSNBC: Author of pro-McCain book describes McCain as having the American military in his blood 5) FNC: AUFC's Bush Legacy Bus and awesome communications director on Shepard Smith's program 6) MSNBC: Olbermann cites McCain: 'Bin Laden may have just given us a little boost' during segment on Black's *Fortune *comments [no clip] 7) MSNBC: Olbermann mentions how McCain promotes eBay as a way for Americans to make money [no clip] 8) MSNBC: Olbermann mocks McCain for basically admitting his offshore drilling proposal is a gimmick [no clip] 9) NBC WRC summarizes the McCain message from Las Vegas today [no clip] 10) CBS WUSA outlines the AP-Yahoo poll about who is better suited to deal with the Iraq war and the LA Times domestic issue poll. They also briefly discussed the music both candidates have on their iPods [no clip] 11) MSNBC: Chris Matthews asks panel whether Charlie Black's terror comment in *Fortune* magazine was smart, citing recent polls that show the public trusts McCain more with terror. Panel concludes: no. Matthews also cites McCain's similar '04 statement on Bush [no clip] Clips Highlight #1 *Computer Illiterate, Just Like President Bush *(CNN 06/25/08 06:59pm) JEANNE MOOST: We don't expect the President to be the Liberace of the keyboard but still. Should the next President of the United States know how to work a computer? KID ON THE STREET: I mean, yeah. I guess so. It would be helpful. Why not? MOOST: Ask John McCain. Here's how he describes his computer skills: JOHN MCCAIN: I am an illiterate that has to rely on my wife for all the assistance that I can get. WOMAN ON STREET: Oh that's absolutely ridiculous. […] MOOST: *While Cindy McCain's been spotted scrolling on her blackberry, John McCain tends to be handed a blackberry to talk on*. Barack Obama on the other side is one of those guys so intent on reading his black berry that he could run into something. […] A far cry from this guy: GEORGE BUSH: I hear there's rumors on the internets. One of the things I've used on the Google. MOOST: Just the other day President Bush did it again. BUSH: They can go on their computers and dial up volunteer.org. […] MOOST: But McCain's admission that he is computer illiterate was fodder for debate at something called the Personal Democracy Forum. The online expert who had worked for John Edwards got into it with the Internet expert from the McCain campaign. MCCAIN EXPERT: You don't necessarily have to use a computer to understand how it shapes the country. EDWARDS EXPERT: That's the point. You do. MOOST: But when McCain's guy said this: MCCAIN EXPERT: John McCain is aware of the Internet. MOOST: John McCain is aware of the Internet became a joke on the Internet. […] At least John McCain knows the difference between a lap dance and a laptop even if jokesters made a mock up of John McCain's real website with: How does this thing work? And should I double click here? *Panelists Laugh at McCain's Expense (and Bush's)* (CNN 06/25/08 6:40pm) [Clip opens with President Bush endorsement of John McCain.] WOLF BLITZER: All right. He's out on the campaign trail obviously. What do you think? GLORIA BORGER: Third Bush term. I think he's asking for a third Bush term for John McCain. He's using the McCain' campaign slogan. 'This isn't the kind of change you want. I can provide the kind of change you need,' and that the kind of change Barack Obama provides is 'fake.' This is George Bush right now campaigning for his legacy. […] JACK CAFFERTY: What does he got? A 28% approval rating? Nobody cares at this point […]. PANELIST: I think Bush is onto something. The real change would be bringing Alberto Gonzalez back as attorney general, Don Rumsfeld back as secretary of defense and McCain's vice president: Larry Craig. […] Highlight #2 *McCain Names Energy Proposals The Lexington Project, Nuclear Plans Worry Voters in Nevada *(CNN 06/25/08 7:04pm) DANA BASH: McCain has been pushing energy related ideas for nearly 2 weeks. Today he labeled those proposals, The Lexington Project. Named for a Revolutionary War site, its intended as a simple way to communicate to voters that he's leading . […] JOHN MCCAIN: In a world of hostile and unstable suppliers of oil, this nation will achieve strategic independence by 2025. BASH: A lofty goal aimed at invoking John F. Kennedy and some Harry Truman for good measure. MCCAIN: 3 decades of partisan paralysis on energy security is enough. Since I am not President I cannot say the buck stops here but I will say that it must stop now. BASH: But beyond the snappy sound bites, many of the ways John McCain's wants to wean America from oil are controversial. Take Nuclear Energy: MCCAIN: I will set this Nation on a course to build 45 new reactors by the year 2030. BASH: *That's a promise voters he was speaking to in Nevada are weary of. Because of congress's plan to store nuclear waste in their state, Yucca Mountain. Something McCain has supported.* MCCAIN: We well need to solve complex problems of moving and storing materials that will always need safeguarding. We will need to do all these things and do them right. Highlight #3 *Fortune Magazine Editor David Whitford "Surprised" That McCain Thinks Biggest Threat to Economy is Terrorism, Says It's "Very Telling"* (CNN 06/25/08 12:10pm) JOHN ROBERTS: [...] In the interview you did with John McCain you asked him what the greatest threat to the American economy is and he said 'radical Islamic terrorism.' Were you surprised by that answer? DAVID WHITFORD: Yeah, I was pretty surprised. *I was expecting him to say something about, I don't know, rising gas prices or climate change or something like that. But it was very telling that he turned it around to an answer about national security. I think he feels that that's the issue on which he's got the best chance of winning in November.* And I think we're going to see a lot of that this year. Questions directed at John McCain that he will try to turn into national security issues. ROBERTS: So if John McCain can in fact make the economy a national security issue, he has admitted that the economy is not his strongest point, but if he manages to make that connection, could he mitigate any disadvantage that he has on Issue #1 with Barack Obama. WHITFORD: Yeah, possibly. I mean he's gained some familiarity with economic issues over the years. And he really has a plan that's very different [...] I would start with Free Trade. John McCain has been an advocate, a longtime advocate of Free Trade for breaking down trade barriers [...] ROBERTS: Big differences on energy policy as well David. John McCain advocating a gas tax holiday, as well as expansion of offshore drilling. Are either one of those plans viable? WHITFORD: Well I think neither has very good political prospects. I mean certainly, his proposal for a summer gas tax holiday has zero chance of ever even being introduced in Congress, much less being passed. And he would admit himself that's not the sort of thing for a long-term positive effect on energy prices. In fact, I think that most economists would say that the effect might even be detrimental because it would increase demand for gas and demand seems to be what's driving up gas prices. His other proposal, to open up offshore drilling conceivably, I suppose, if it were to become law might have the effect of increasing supply and that might have the effect of bringing down energy prices long term but again I think it's unrealistic and maybe moving us in the wrong direction. We need to begin weaning ourselves from fossil fuels not finding new ways to exploit them. Highlight #4 *Author of Pro-McCain Book: McCain is the Product of the US Military* (MSNBC 06/25/08 12:47pm) CONTESSA BREWER: You know, we have seen a lot of liberals criticizing John McCain and saying, 'He's no maverick. He backs up President Bush. I mean, he's backing up President Bush on the issues like offshore drilling and the tax cuts and the surge in Iraq.' So why do you call it a 'maverick life'? PAUL ALEXANDER: I think if you look back at the first Bush term, the first four years of the Bush presidency, he fairly consistently worked against almost everything the Bush Administration was advancing, the tax cuts—there was a great story. He was supposed to be—have dinner at the White House one night but he was actually at the capitol, trying to derail one of the Bush tax proposals. He couldn't go have dinner with the president 'cause he was trying to shoot down his tax proposals. There was a sort of a sear—on the econ—on the…you know, econ—ecology, you know…. BREWER: Environmentalism. ALEXANDER: Environmental issues. All that. So there's a long—if you go back and look at the record a lot of what he did in those first four Bush years was fight against the president. BREWER: […] Did he learn lessons from [the 2000 republican primary] that he's now put into practice that helped him secure the nomination this time around and could help him going toward the White House? ALEXANDER: I think so. I was on the campaign trail with him in South Carolina, during the South Carolina primary in 2000 and it really was the dirtiest race […] I've seen. […] I think he learned that you have to respond to those attacks. […] That was his mistake last time. He should have answered and he didn't. BREWER: […] McCain carries with him proudly his military experience […]. Has that experience influenced him so strongly that he is unable to accept any kind of limitations on what the military can accomplish overseas? ALEXANDER: Well, *he's a product of the American military.* […] *He's a product of the American military and he thinks in terms of, you know, being a product of the American military.* So when they talk about who's gonna be best for national security, this is what the McCains do. BREWER: It's in his blood. ALEXANDER: It's in his blood. Highlight #5 *Bush Legacy Bus and J. Funk on Britt Hume* (FNC 06/25/08 06:31pm) BRITT HUME: President George Bush's approval rating is at an all time low but one liberal activists group not only doesn't want to recover this year it doesn't want it to recover ever. American's United for Change has unveiled the Bush Legacy Bus. Which highlights what it calls the failed policies of the Bush administration on the outside. The bus features a photo of President Bush and phrases like: economy in crisis, endless war in Iraq, healthcare's a mess. On the inside there are various interactive exhibits and videos. AUC's communication director tells Cybercast News that the bus is: [Visual of Quote] "designed to drive a stake through the heart of the failed conservative ideology as a governing philosophy." –Jeremy Funk -- Jacob Roberts Media Analyst PMUSA (c) 208.420.3470 --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the "big campaign" group.
