Speech Highlights:*
*
- TY for coming out -- I know everybody has something else to do today.
Town halls are the essence of USA.
- Americans are facing major challenges in this country. We're all going
to have to come together--Dem and GOP--and put our country first.
- USA has faced greater challenges in the past and we may again in the
future.
- Right now we know in the past we have overcome those: we went to the
moon faster than anyone had anticipated, we defeated the Nazis.
- Price of gas hurting every one. "Every time you go to the gas station
you are shocked by the price of a gallon of oil" Lowest-income Americans
hurting the most, that's why I wanted to give them a little gas tax holiday.
You know what might happen? We might not be able to fund some of those
pork-barrel projects that Congress loves spending money on, or build a
bridge to nowhere. [awkward: 'You might-- you might-- you might--!"]
- This is an economic, national security, energy issue.
- We are sending money to people who don't like us very much.
- Largest transfer of wealth
- I believe greenhouse gas emissions are real, climate change is
real.
- We need wind, solar, nuclear. Navy hasn't had an accident in 60 years.
The problem is that we don't store or re-process the spent fuel. We always
want to imitate the French. So what do they do? Reprocess it! We can store
and re-process it. It will have an immediate impact on our demand for
foreign oil.
- A week or so after the Prez lifted the federal moratorium on
dirilling"We need to drill off shore! We need to get our resources that are
off shore and get them into our market!" So that the world will know we're
on our way to being independent.
- US sits on one of greatest . I'm willing to spend $2B / year on R & D
for clean coal technology. think about how many jobs that would generate
- It takes French 5 years to build a nuclear power plant. why should it
take us 15? I want 45 new plants by 2030.
- Obama doesn't want to drill. Obama's presidential seal said in Latin
something like 'yes we can.' I think it should say 'No we won't'
- I was recently in Detroit and saw this new car they're trying to get
out by 2010. We need to have flex fuels (use ethanol) cars, hybrids, cars
with batteries that will take them 200 mi. If people want to buy that car, I
will give them up to a $5k tax credit.
- I call it the Lexington Project. You can call it anything you want.
- We have faced greater challenges. There are people here who have served
in teh military. They were able to emerge victorious and I'm sure USA can
follow in their footsteps.
- One more issue-- this on-going debate about the war in Iraq. We won a
very easy initial strategy. Then we employed a very bad strategy that almost
lost us this. I knew it was bad, I fought against it, and I was called
disloyal by GOPs. I knew the strategy we had to take, we switched strategy
and we found the great Gen. Petraeus to lead us. It's called a surge, but
it's more-- it's basically a counter-insurgency strategy. Petraeus has
troops going into neighborhoods, stay, and make sure they can do all the
things that are part of a normal life. First, they had to fight back AQI.
This strategy has succeeded. And we are winning this conflict.
- The benefits of this success are that we would restrain Iranian
influence--btw, Iranians are still importing IEDs killing Americans. It
would prevent AQI from establishing solid base in Iraq. And consequences of
defeat would be terrible. If we lost
- I knew all this. I knew then and I know now.
- Obama said the strategy was doomed to failure, that there would be an
increase in sectarian violence. This shows a tremendous failure to
understand facts on the ground. "He would rather lose a war and win a
campaign" He favors an unconditional withdrawal, which could lead to our
failure and our return to IRaq. With me, we won't have to come back. because
we will have won and we are succeeding. Obama says if we lose that we may
have to go back. And we may.
- [Matthew Stanley story-- Make sure my son's death was not in vain.
- I want to be POTUS because I believe I can inspire a generation of
Americans becuase I believe I can inspire a generation of young Americans to
serve a cause greater than myself. Many years ago I had an opportunity to
leave POW camp early because my father was a high-ranking admiral. But there
was a Mexican-American named Everett Alvarez who had been there 2 years
earlier. And I chose my country first. [enthusiastic applause]
- We may disagree on specific issues. Adn we can talk about them--well I
hope not, I hope we agree on everything! Debate is healthy.
- (1) I need your support. PA will be battleground again. And I will
always appreciate that support. (2) I will always put my country first and I
will never let you down.
Question and Answer
- [jokes: We have work-release program
- 1Q) What are your feelings about Israel right now? Them having to give
back land to the Palestinians? Status of Palestinians?
- MCCAIN: That's a matter to be dealt with within Israel. Israel is
probably under greatest threat since their independence--there is ample
evidence that Iranians developing nuclear weapons and Russia is
preventing
us from imposing UN sanctions; but European democracies willing
to help us.
We have Hezbollah and Hamas on their borders. There's some disruption in
Israel political process itself. Mostly I'm concerned about Iran's nukes,
with leader claiming to wipe Israel off the map before the UN.
US once said
that we will never allow a second holocaust.
- 2Q) [lifelong Democrat--but independent-minded] Our country will have
to monetarily support our troops. But will you continue to pour money into
Iraqi government--they're not using their oil revenues. (2b) The $0.18
rebate doesnt amount to much.
- MCCAIN: I'd like to introduce you to the guy that drives the diesel
truck. For the lowest-income Americans it means a lot.
Congress's approval
is 9%. What would you rather have your tax dollars doing? Helping the
low-income Americans or going to bridges to nowhere. It's not the answer.
It's just a bit of a break. And we need to give them some breaks.
- FOLLOWUP: I kind of get that, but it doesn't make a big difference.
- MCCAIN: A lot of people I talk to say I want a little break. I'm not
saying it's the answer. As soon as the Prez announced he was
lifting the fed
moratorium, the price of oil went down.
- MCCAIN: Iraqis are taking up more of their responsible. There's
corruption--it's not terrible, in Afghanistan its worse. They
are paying for
their oil production. And as American troops withdraw--and they
will--that'll cut down our expenses there. Some straight-talk: a
resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan, and we're going to have to
send more troops there. Good news is that it's a NATO operation,
though we
will have to take the lead.
- 3Q) How will you address mandating and not funding for education?
- MCCAIN: I think it's the worst thing they can do, because it leaves
the burden on local governance. I think you're referring to
NCLB--good idea
but we never provided the funding. We need to fix it. I think it's been a
great change in education because it allows us to assess. I believe in
choice, I beliEeve in charter schools, rewarding good teachers, vouchers.
That every family should have opportunity Cindy and I did when
we sent our
kids to Catholic school--and I'm not Catholic. Cases in point:
NYC (when a
school has a bad grade, parents move their kids to another school); NOLA
(they had to start from square 1; they have over 30 charter
schools. choice
and competition "duh"). I think it's the civil rights issue of this
generation providing every American with quality education.
- FOLLOWUP: How do we control size of classes?
- MCCAIN: I think too large class size degrades quality of education.
But I believe you should have some flexibility in dealing with that
situation. If your student grades can make progress, then good.
If not, then
you should pay a penalty.
- 4Q) What's your plan vs. Obama's on how you see the future of the
economy within our nation and then across the world?
- MCCAIN: Americans are hurting badly, especially downward spiral for
homeowners. The energy crisis has been a double whammy, with the
increased
price of gas hurting plus increased inflation for food prices. This is a
time of great challenge for America. We have to address energy crisis. WE
have to be able to keep people in their homes: I want everyone
to be able to
get FHA 30-year mortgage for their homes at their NEW value and then pay
that because the value of their homes has gone down. We have to stop the
spending in Washington.
- A little straight-talk: We GOPs when we came to Congress let
spending get out of control. And I fought it every step of the
way. I have
never asked for or received a single earmark for my state of AZ.
Obama has
asked for tons. There is a difference. I will veto every earmark
pork-barrel
bill that comes across my desk. The last bad news is that it
hasn't stopped
in Washington even in these hard times--still the spending.
- 5Q) My son is at Drexel on a wrestling scholarship. My concern is if
you needed to instate a draft, what would be your protocol?
- MCCAIN: First of all, wrestling is great. ... Remind me of your
question. I don't need we need to reinstate a draft. Our
military today is
the greatest, best-trained. But it's simply not big enough. And
the PA Guard
and Reserve have done magnificently. They've given and given and given. I
served when there was a draft--it was unfair. The poorest
Americans served
and the wealthiest avoided it. The military today is so
highly-trained that
it doesn't do well with the short period of a draft. I want Americans to
have the opportunity to serve, not be forced to. One of the
biggest problems
with after 9/11 is that we shouldnt have asked Americans to shop, but to
serve.
- 6Q) What's your comment on Bush's remarks 'say bye to the world's #1
polluter? Why is it taking Iraqis so long to take control of their
country?
- MCCAIN: on 2nd question-- Because we mishandled it for nearly 4
years. We sent people from bases to fight and kill people and
then they went
back to the base. The new strategy isn't just more troops--they
stayed, they
lived and ate and slept along with the Iraqis. They had never known of a
noncommissioned officer with real power. And then we got Petraeus and it
turned it around in a relatively short period of time. It's
succeeding and
it's succeeded. And it means schools running and markets going
without fear
someone's going to run and cut off their heads. There are still
going to be
spectacular attacks and suicide bombs, but if you look at the
overall stats,
it's a success--but it's a fragile. Obama wanted us out last March.
Can you imagine?! "I know how to win wars!" 2x
- FOLLOWUP: I agree there's been progress. But sometimes Americans
have problem admitting they made a mistake, e.g. Bush. And there are
American soldiers lost! And Walter Reed!
- MCCAIN: There's a great difference in the war in which I fought and
this war. In the war I fought, vets were mistreated. Now Americans are
divided, but they are treating the vets right. We need to improve our
medical abilities to treat the wounds, we need to treat the PTSD. For
routine health care needs, vets shouldn't ahve to stand in line
at the VA,
but should get a card and go to a doctor of their choice and get treated.
- The issue of pollution will come up in another question because we
covered a lot of ground. I think we can address it in a economic and
efficient way.
- 7Q) On SS: Am I contributing to a program that will retire before I do?
- MCCAIN: Unless we fix it. A great unjustice done to your generation
is that this system is going to go broke adn you're not going to
receive the
benefits you're paying into. We know there's a set of solutions
to restore
the fiscal health. We need to sit down together. In 1983, SS was going
broke. Reagan and O'Neill said we're gonna fix it. That's what's
missing in
America today in Congress. I'm committed to doing exactly that. I'll tell
Pelosi and Reid, I'll give you all the credit. But I want to put
Americans'
interests first.
- 8Q) As GOP candidate for POTUS, do you have second thoughts on
McCain-Feingold?
- This meeting is adjourned. I do not. I believe that special
interests outweigh the voice of those without the money and lobbying.
There's corruption. I will continue to stand up against them. I voted
against the energy bill, Obama didn't. The farm bill, incl the ethanol
subsidies. I'll continue to work to clean up adn reduce the influence of
special interests in DC. I'd like to tell you in DC today that your
interests are uppermost, but I dont think they are. We'll have
to continue
to work. And our citizens should express their voice at hte ballot
box.
- 9Q) How could you influence Congress to stop the spending?
- MCCAIN: First, get enacted a version of the line-item veto that is
Constitutional. 43 of 50 governors have it. States have to balance their
budget, fed doesn't have to. We need to increase the
transparency. I'd like
to do something like the British PM going back and forth with Parliament.
Anything that gets Americans more involved. The day I'm elected--not
inaugurated--is call Speaker and say I'm going to be in town next week.
Let's get together and set priorities. And I promise you, I'll
give you all
the credit. We have to do it. This country deserves so much
better than what
it's got today. And you in PA will probably play a very large role in
determining that.
- I strongly believe our best days are ahead of us. We talk about the
problems. But I believe in the fundamentals of America. Every
time I travel
around the world, I am so happy to come back. God bless America. I need
your vote!
