1 Q) I've really admired you for years and was interested in your campaign
eight years ago. I'm frustrated by misinformation out there. I'm not sure
we're getting the real John McCain story out there. Instead 'they're calling
you Bush the third and they're not being fair.' What can your campaign do to
underscore your bi-partisanship and other positive attributes more?
MCCAIN: Thank you. Jack Kennedy said life isn't fair and I appreciate that
saying more and more. I have a long record of working with dems and I
investigated the Abramoff scandal and I fought against a tanker deal that
would cost billions in taxpayer dollars. I have a record of reform. With
that said, I'd like to restore the trust and confidence the American people
have lost in their government. I'm reluctant to talk about my past
experiences. I'd rather talk about my record. I'll do more to get it out
there and thanks for the question.
2 Q) I have a son with a chronic illness and he is about to enter the
workforce. He isn't a great student so I'm worried about the health care he
can receive from the employers who are likely to hire him. So let's talk
about health care reform.
MCCAIN: I won't go into all the details of my views. I suggest you go to
countries with government-ran health care if you like that idea. We'll have
to sit down with legislators and governors across America and establish risk
pools and match Federal and State funding to make health care for everyone.
I know this has been a challenge for you and your family and I wish your son
the best. Do you have an approach to that problem, Governor Pawlenty?
PAWLENTY: We have the lowest uninsured rate in the country, luckily. McCain
has outlined a plan like what we have in the state and it has worked pretty
well. I think what he's describing would work in other states and across the
country.
MCCAIN: Would you like to add anything?
3Q) I'd like to compliment you on your tie. Nuclear power and oil drilling
hasn't worked. Would you approach drilling concurrently with the nuclear
power issues of storage?
MCCAIN: I think we have to store and re-process. I think we have to do both.
I think Carter made a bad decision when he said we wouldn't re-process spent
nuclear fuel. We should emulate the French's power policies. Says that spent
material must go somewhere, if not Yucca Mt. We could make an international
site. Spent nuclear fuel is a national security issue so we can't be
satisfied with the SQ.
MCCAIN: Did you want to add?

5Q) Thank you for coming. Very nice to meet you. Can you expound on your
immigration policies?
MCCAIN: We need a workable temporary worker program. It should be connected
to a tamper-proof biometric ID system. Today the business owner is the INS
agent. The business owner can't determine from the ID as well as he could
with a biometric ID system. It is a Federal responsibility to secure the
borders. In 1986 we said we'd give amnesty to people and secure the borders.
We only did the former, so I understand why Americans are frustrated. These
immigrants are god's children and we must treat them humanely.
6Q) The peace that I haven't heard you talk about seems behind the things
you're discussing. That is education. Costs are soaring. Some people might
say that NCLB is a bit of a failure. So could you discuss your education
policy?
MCCAIN: I agree. Education is crucial. We have to give displaced workers an
opportunity for education. NCLB is flawed, but a good beginning. We should
not scrap it and instead 'fix it where it needs fixing.' We've got to reward
good teachers more. We've got find bad teachers another line of work. The
key is choice and competition. New Orleans has made a stunning recovery
since Katrina due to charter schools. I believe in charter schools. They
aren't necessarily always better, but they provide choice and competition.
Choice and competition are the answer. It isn't just money that does the
job. Education is a key element to keep us in position as a world leader.
7Q) Thank you for being here. I've been the victim of too many sound bytes.
Earlier you said you'd like to declare victory in Iraq and where does Iran
fall into that?
MCCAIN: I've been the victim of sound bytes myself. As our efforts look more
effective, then Gen DP will recommend troop levels. Our progress is very
fragile. Some rogue elements are very malicious. Not only malicious but
militias. The casualties are meeting record lows. It's the Iraqi military in
Mosul, in Basra, in Sadr City with American support. That is a sign of
success and that was the purpose of the surge. Petraeus said he talked with
Obama on the phone and told him we are succeeding. If Obama had been
successful in his call for withdrawal, we would have been involved in a
wider war.
Is that sufficient?
QUESTIONER: Yes.
8Q) How would you have handled the war differently from Bush?
MCCAIN: I came back from Iraq after our initial victory and called for a
different strategy. Republicans called me disloyal. Non-coms said we had
insufficient troops. I came back and took on Rumsfeld and others.
9Q) A lot of people I talk to say there's no difference between the
republicans and democrats. What are you going to do to show the
conservatives you're the real deal instead of the hate America crowd who
makes our laws nowadays?
MCCAIN: It's questions like this one that make me wish Obama would be here.
I want to lower taxes and he wants to raise them. I want your families to
make the decisions on health care and Obama wants the government to make the
decisions. Obama would sit down with Ahmadenijad and I would not. I hope
you'd examine my record. It's important to address the biggest issues of
today (like inflation and homeownership). 81% of Americans think this
country's off-track. My character and principle are closely aligned with
Ronald Reagan and I believe he's a good role model. I think the American
people want straight talk and they don't want us to change our positions.

record with the One campaign and the fight against poverty. What will you or
your administration do to bring Africa into the world economy?
MCCAIN: We need to continue programs that combat HIV/AIDS. I think we need
to give the Bush admin credit for his help there. If you go into the lobby
of Google, there's a giant globe with lights. It's people who are on the
Internet and Googling. It's not lit up on Africa very much because people in
Africa left behind. In Zimbabwe they subverted the election. The leader has
been in charge for I forget how long. Governments matter. The Gates
foundation is admirable because it mandates governments implement the
ability to put the money in use instead of going to Swiss bank accounts. I
will do whatever we can to help the continent of Africa. Thanks for the

11Q) I am a naturalized citizen. Your record is tremendous, extraordinary
and outstanding. How do you expect to take on long-term issues such as
balancing the budget, stem-cell research, the lack of engineering and
scientific talent and lack of jobs in that field? Are you prepared to take
on the long-term issues of this nation?
MCCAIN: I am. We should provide available and affordable education. The cost
of schools is going up at an unacceptable rate. We need to make sure
students have loans available to them this fall. We have to inject choice
and competition into the public schools. The first thing we need to do is
ensure every eligible student has education available to them, especially
starting with our veterans. We need to incentivize the scientific fields. We
need to go back to the pre-9/11 days when we allowed foreigners to come here
and educated themselves and then contribute to our economy.
12Q) On the phone I identified myself as a strong democrat and they invited
me anyway. I'm a veteran from the Iraq war. The trend over the past eight
years has been disturbing with veteran's health care. What will you do for
veteran's health care? How would you handle their needs?
MCCAIN: Thank you for your service to our country. We need to applaud the
people who work in the veteran's administrations, but they have insufficient
resources and funds. I would like to see a focus on PTSD, of which there is
a lot and battleground wounds. I'd like to give them a plastic card so they
can go to a healthcare provider of their choice and get treatment
immediately. Would you like to follow up?

13Q) Thanks for coming to Minnesota. Our congresswoman has pledged to bring
us closer to $2/gallon. Have you seen that proposal and what do you think of
it, if so?
MCCAIN: I'd like to see that plan. The only way we'd achieve that is to
eliminate our dependence on an oil cartel. They can basically set the price.
The supply is facing dramatic demands from India and China. In the
meanwhile, we have to exploit existing reserves, which is why I changed my
mind on offshore exploration. I don't envision that our oil prices will
reduce dramatically in the near future. I look forward to seeing her
proposal.

QUESTIONER: Some of your democratic counterparts have suggested
nationalizing the oil. What do you think of that?
MCCAIN: I'd like to get more money to the states. Gov Crist supports that.
The drilling has a proven record of being 'environmentally pretty good.'
Katrina and Rita caused relatively little spills so I think there's a case
to be made that it can be environmentally sound.
14Q) You said you're a straight-talker. I've lost faith in politicians
because they spin the story. With all due respect, I'd like you to tell us
the things we don't want to hear.
MCCAIN: I went to Iowa and said I don't support ethanol subsidies because
they distort the market. Ethanol is a good source of fuel. I went to North
Carolina and said the textile mills won't return. I'm telling the American
people some straight talk now about energy. We should lead in our efforts to
gain energy independence.
We are in a long struggle with radical Islamic extremism. I believe it will
require a lot of sacrifice and a lot of service. When I meet the servicemen
and women my doubts are resolved.

MCCAIN: I thought this last decision they just made about extending the
rights of American citizens to enemy combatants was a bad thing. One of the
30 people who were released committed a suicide bomb attack. I decry torture
across the board and will never allow it as president. Hopefully we can do
some legislative modification to soften the blow of that Supreme Court
decision because its far-reaching impacts.
16Q) Would you talk to us often like Roosevelt or Reagan?
MCCAIN: Yes. I would update Americans regularly. I wouldn't tell Americans
what they want to hear, I'd tell them what they should hear. I would hold
press conferences at least every two weeks. 'I dislike the media intensely,
as you know.' Still the President of the United States should talk to them
regularly. I think we should do a venue where congress questions me as
president like in the British parliament. There's got to be more involvement
at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. We are gridlocked and putting our party
first. I commit to briefing the American people on the conflicts we're in
regularly.
17Q) I think Pawlenty would make an excellent VP. What do you think? What
are his chances?
MCCAIN: I knew we should have stopped. This meeting is adjourned. I believe
Governor Pawlenty is the next generation of the Republican Party in America.
I wouldn't like to speculate on who the VP candidates are, but I know he has
a place in the future of this country as well as this party.
The VP really only has two duties: to cast the tie-breaking vote and inquire
daily as to the health of the president.
