Little Saint James
Accident Report: Big N and Cement Tanker
Dated: 5-3-2011
Date of Incident 5-2-2011
Location of Incident: Close to St James Cut
Description of Incident:
At approximately 12:15 on 05/02/11 Big N departed Red Hook with a full cement tanker in route to LSJ.
Sea conditions were moderate to 3ft with a slight swell. Wind was 10 to 12 out of the east south
east, which is typical early, may weather. Big N was running at 1350 rpm which with a full tanker makes
about 7.5 knots. If sea conditions are rough it is common practice to go through Current Cut and
approach LSJ from the west; however sea conditions did not call for this so Big N was keeping ST James
on starboard and approaching LSJ from the east. While rounding the southeast point of ST James on
starboard side and a small beam sea on port the vessel was rolling very slightly when the tanker under
carriage collapsed and the tanker rolled on to its side and ended up on the starboard rail of the Big N
cause it list to starboard at an approximately a 35-40 degree angle. Steering was very difficult at this
time but the vessel slowed to 4.5 knots and I continued on to LSJ. I made a call to clear the dock so I
could come secure on starboard side.

Description of Incident:
I was having lunch near the main compound and notice the Barge returning to LSJ with the Cement
Tanker on board.
As Barge rounded the point of Great St James the Cement tanker suddenly moved on the Barge causing
the barge to list to Starboard.
I immediately call Brice Gordon and informed him what had occurred and then proceed to the dock to
assist.
The sea condition where fair with a slight swell.
