*ABC Investigation Blasts McCain for Connection to Religious Extremist Rod
Parsley, Calls McCain "Spiritual Guide" a "Handicap" in Dealing with Muslim
World* (ABC 05/22/08 7:02am)
DIANE SAWYER: Pastor problems plaguing another presidential candidate, this
time John McCain. Facing questions about his ties to a preacher who has made
controversial, fiercely anti-Islamic comments.
BRIAN ROSS: In dealing with what he calls the central threat of our time,
Senator McCain says the US has failed to win the hearts and minds of the
Islamic world. But if that is McCain's plan if elected, he seems to have
already badly complicated it by recruiting the support of an evangelical
minister now known in the Arab world as a hate monger. It was at a critical
moment in his campaign, trying to win support from the religious right where
John McCain sought and received the support of the evangelical world.
[cut to footage of McCain announcing support of Parsley at rally]
JOHN MCCAIN: And I'm very honored today to have one of the truly great
leaders in America, a moral compass, a spiritual guide, Pastor Rod Parsley,
who is here and thank you for, for your leadership and your guidance. I'm
very grateful you're here, sir.
ROSS: Campaign aides then positioned Parsley right behind McCain for
photographers, apparently unconcerned about what Parsley stands for…
[cut to footage of Parsley preaching]
ROSS: Parsley's words and his connection to McCain are now showing up on
Arab websites and newspapers. The headline here [graphic is newspaper],
'McCain's spiritual advisor calls for the destruction of Islam.' A huge
handicap for McCain, according to a former CIA Intelligence Officer.
JOHN KIRIAKOU: The handicap is that it is already assumed that the Muslim's
are not gonna get a fair shake from a McCain administration.
ROSS: McCain has done nothing to reject Parsley's endorsement, even though
his comments seem in stark contrast.

ROSS: In a statement the McCain spokesman said, 'the Senator obviously
strongly rejects such statements.' But the spokesman would not answer the
question of whether the Senator or the campaign knew that Parsley widely
publicized views before seeking his endorsement or before Senator McCain
called Parsley 'one of the truly great leaders in America, a moral compass,
a spiritual guide.'
DIANE SAWYER: Yes, we heard it there on stage, 'spiritual guide and leader.'

*General Petraeus Recommends Further Iraq Troop Reductions* (MSNBC 05/22/08
10:30am)
REPORTER: Just moments ago General Petraeus said he would recommend further
troop reductions in Iraq.
GENERAL PETRAEUS: My sense is that I will be able to make a recommendation
at that time for some further reductions. I don't want to imply that that
means a BCT or major combat formation, although it could. But I do believe
that there will be certain assets that, as we are already looking at the
picture right now, we'll be able to recommend can be either redeployed or
not deployed to the theater in the Fall.

*Luntz Focus Group: John McCain's Age, Do Voters Care?* (FNC 05/22/08
7:20am)
GRETCHEN WILSON: Is Senator John McCain too old to be President. That's the
question that we've heard lobbed around a lot the last couple of months.
VOTER 1: No, he's not too old. You want the experience…
VOTER 2: I think the fact that he's older is better…
VOTER 3: I think John McCain has been tested in everyway possible and so far
he has met all the tests. He is not too old, he's very experienced.
VOTER 4: He's proved his point. He suffered in Vietnam with his age. He got
older and he worked for Congress through all these years.
VOTER 5: I don't think age really means that much in regards to these three
candidates because of the fact that for any president they have to work with
all parties of government to make sure, for anything to successfully occur.
So it doesn't really matter.
VOTER 6: Just as a young person you feel better with someone you can relate
to more on a personal level. Not age, age is just a number but at the same
time he feels like a grandparent.
VOTER 7: Young people feel that we cannot relate to someone who is 70 years
old. Staying in this war is gonna cost, is gonna cost us down the line and
it's costing us now.
WILSON: But there was another thing at the end of that soundbite, Frank, the
war. Would that be the second thing people would talk about in regard to
John McCain?
FRANK LUNTZ: Yes and it's gonna be very divisive and McCain's position on
the war is not supported by a majority of Americans, Obama's is…We're gonna
have the greatest age difference in terms of candidate support that this
country has seen since 18 year olds won the right to vote in 1972. Young
people are voting overwhelmingly for Obama, older people voting for John
McCain.
Highlight #4
*Zbignew Brzezinski Says McCain's Foreign Policy Posturing Will Leave Us
"Totally Isolated" in the World, Calls his Rhetoric on Iran "Reminiscent of
the Kind of Warmongering that President Bush was engaging in prior to the
War in Iraq"* (MSNBC 05/22/08 8:30am)
JOHN MCCAIN: Senator Obama has declared and repeatedly reaffirmed his
intention to meet the president of Iran without any preconditions [...]
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Senator John McCain not holding back dad at painting Barack
Obama as basically a neophyte on foreign policy and weak. What do you say?
ZBIGNEW BRZEZINSKI: [...] If Senator McCain becomes President and pursues
the kind of policies that are implicit in his statements we're gonna be
totally isolated in the world. Our last refuge will be to become a global
gated community, truly isolated. Moreover, there's something ominous in the
tones of his observations. They're reminiscent of the kind of warmongering
that President Bush was engaging in prior to the war with Iraq. Are we about
to head into some sort of conflict with Iran, if Mr. McCain becomes
President? His principal foreign policy adviser, Senator Lieberman, is
already advocating World War Four with the World of Islam.
Highlight #5
*Governor Pawlenty Defends McCain From Harkin Comments Calling McCain
Military History a Liability *(FNC 05/22/08 7:40am)
BRIAN KILMEADE: But I got to get you to Governor Harkin's comments, Senator
Harkin's comments. He made his comments saying that John McCain's background
in the military and his dad and grandfather being Admiral's in the military
make him essentially somebody who is too military minded and I somewhat
paraphrase, dangerous to be President, what's your take on that?
TIM PAWLENTY: Well I think that's preposterous. I think when you look at the
skills that are needed to be the President of the United States and
Commander in Chief; John McCain is uniquely situated compared to the other
candidates. He has bonafied military experience, benefited national security
experience. He's precisely the kind of person you want in that office. And
with all due respect to Senator Harkin, I think his comments are misguided
and ill thought out.
Highlight #6
*McCain's VP Meeting Discussed on CBS, Segment Mentions McCain's Age and How
This Heightens Importance of His VP Selection *(CBS 05/22/08
DEAN REYNOLDS: In Arizona on Friday John McCain will welcome some
interesting guests. The Governors of Florida, Charlie Crist, and Lousiana,
Bobby Jindal. Amid speculation that either or both could be on a list of
potential vice presidential choices. In addition former GOP rival Mitt
Romney will be a guest. McCain's campaign calls the weekend a "social
occasion" but selection of a running mate must be at the top McCain's to do
list. He recently told reporters he had about 20 names to go over. On
election day he'll be 72, with all that implies for the person he picks.
