A 60-year-old librarian received a trespassing ticket today after a liberal
group's protest outside a John McCain town hall meeting Monday.
Clutching a sign that read "McCain = Bush," Carol Kreck was removed from the
atrium at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts by four Denver police
officers.
Kreck, a former Denver Post reporter who works part-time as a librarian for
an education think tank, said she was removed as she quizzed a police
officer about whether he could deny her free speech "on city property" by
taking away her sign, while McCain supporters wore buttons inside.
Jenny Schiavone, a spokeswoman for the performing arts center, said the
venue is city-owned rental property, but is not legally defined as public

property.
The liberal group ProgressNowAction had called before the event and asked
about being inside the atrium, she said. The group was told it would have to
rent space or use previously designated protest areas along the street,
Schiavone said.
Michael Huttner, who organized the rally, said Progress NowAction was not
told to rent space or stand anywhere.
A Youtube video of Kreck's removal, posted by Progress NowAction, shows a
performing arts center security officer asking Kreck to put down her sign,
noting he had asked her and other protestors to do so earlier. In the same
video, a police officer tells her she can attend the event if she gets rid
of the sign.
A McCain spokesman said no one, including McCain supporters, were allowed to
carry signs.
Detective John White, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department, said
officers acted as they would for any complaint on private property.
"Our officers received a signed complaint from a security guard at a private
event and acted accordingly," he said.
Tom Kise, a spokesman for the McCain campaign, did not know about Kreck's
ouster, but said the town hall-style meeting was open to supporters and
opponents.
"All the campaign asked for is a respectful dialogue," Kise said.
At a speech at the University of Denver in May, war protesters interrupted
McCain four times until they were removed from the event.

Presidential contender John McCain focused on the economy at rowdy town hall
meeting in Denver on Monday, where he pledged to make government "a catalyst
for growth and good jobs."
"I have a plan to grow this economy, create more and better jobs and get
America moving again," the Republican candidate said.
"I have a plan to reform government, achieve energy security, and ensure
that health care and a quality education are affordable and available for
all."
McCain also pledged to give bigger tax breaks for families with children.
"At a time of increasing gas and food prices, American families need tax
relief and I, not my opponent, will deliver it," McCain said in a 30-minute
speech before about 325 people at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
The Arizona senator took several jabs at Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the
presumed Democratic nominee.
"If you believe you should pay more taxes, I am the wrong candidate for you.
Sen. Obama is your man," McCain said. "The choice in this election is stark
and simple. Sen. Obama will raise your taxes. I won't."
Several people outside the complex held signs that said "McCain = Bush" and
at least one person was asked by security to leave.
The McCain campaign said it does not screen town hall participants. And
during the question-and-answer period, the candidate found himself defending
his record on various issues, from veterans to immigration. His backers said
McCain did great.
"I'd like to see Barack Obama come here and take 20 unscripted questions and
see how he does," said former GOP Gov. Bill Owens, who attended the event
with son Brett and daughter Monica.
But Colorado Democrats ripped McCain after the meeting.
"It's part of his 'I'm exactly like George Bush - or worse - economic
tour,'" said Pat Waak, chairwoman of the Colorado Democratic Party.
"It's the same old stuff he's been talking about. He says he's going to
balance the budget but stay in Iraq. How is he going to do that?"
The town hall event began at noon as scheduled with music from the
soundtrack of the movie Rudy playing as McCain and his wife, Cindy, entered
the room.
Beth Isern of Bethany Manufacturing in Nederland introduced Cindy McCain,
who got a laugh when she talked about Denver's weather.
"In the McCain family, rain is good luck," Cindy McCain said.
John McCain referred to Isern in his opening remarks.
"Beth tells me it gets harder every year, not because of the market and
competition, but because of government regulations, taxes and the cost of
health care," he said. "Beth, I promise you, if I'm elected president, we're
going to remove these obstacles to your continued success, and make
government a catalyst for growth and good jobs."
McCain also mentioned another Colorado company, Crocs, maker of the funky
footwear, in talking about free trade.
"This former small business now employs 600 people in Colorado alone, and
sells over 50 percent of its products in 90 countries around the world,"
McCain said. "Building barriers to Crocs or any American company's access to
foreign markets will have a devastating effect on our economy and jobs, and
the prosperity of American families.
"I understand free trade is not a positive for everyone. If a worker loses a
job we must retrain them and prepare them for 21st century jobs."
McCain's only reference to the president was unflattering.
"Government has grown by 60 percent in the last eight years. That is simply
inexcusable," McCain said. "We aren't going to continue mortgaging this
country's future for things Americans don't want or need."

No beans about it, <http://coloradoindependent.com/view/no-beans-about-it>
the silly season is upon us
By Cara <http://coloradoindependent.com/person/15990-cdegette> DeGette

John McCain is coming to Denver today to talk about the economy, and the
liberal group Progress Now has vowed not to disappoint, this time by
trotting out a giant eight-foot pea pod to deliver a message that when it
comes to the economy, McCain and George W. Bush are "two peas in a pod."
Meanwhile, over the weekend the McCain campaign announced that it has begun
to run TV ads - the first major buy of the presidential campaign -
questioning Barack Obama's commitment to energy reform. The ads will run in
four battleground states, though not in Colorado.
As the WashingtonPost.com's Chris Cillizza writes in his blog The Fix,
<http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2008/07/rnc_launches_ads_aimed_at_oba
m.html?nav=rss_blog:> this is about how the McCain ad goes:
"Record gas prices, a climate in crisis," says the ad's narrator. "John
McCain says solve it now." The spot then details McCain's "balanced" plan on
energy and notes that the Arizona Senator is "pushing his own party to face
climate change."
Obama, on the other hand, says nothing but "no" when it comes to addressing
the energy problems the country is facing. "He just says no to lower gas
taxes ... No to nuclear ... No to more production," says the narrator before
concluding: "No new solutions. Barack Obama: Just the party line."
The response from the Obama campaign, Cillizza reports, is "stunned
skepticism."
At least they don't have Obama depicted in the ad as an energy efficient
light bulb - or even a wind turbine.
Which brings us back to Progress Now's planned publicity stunt for today.
The guys and gals who've brought us nicknames for GOP candidates, including
Big Oil Bob <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY6MhUCYeag&feature=related>
(Schaffer), and perpetuated nicknames for others, including Both Ways Bob
<http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/elections/article/0,2808,DRMN_24736_4
796139,00.html> (Beauprez), is planning its giant Pea Pod Political Theater
to coincide with McCain's visit to Denver.
The idea, according to the group's executive director Michael Huttner, is to
lay claim that, when it comes to economic policy, McCain and Bush are
"obviously two peas in a pod." They also plan to hand out pea pods to people
who plan to attend McCain's town hall meeting, which begins at 10 a.m. at
the Denver Center Performing Arts downtown.
"No matter how many green beans you eat, Bush and McCain's economic policies
are bad for America," Huttner says, mixing his vegetable metaphors in a
press release.
