*Blast from the Past: *
With Afghanistan now making headlines, here's an old clip with some new
meaning.
*McCain: "In the long term, we may muddle through Afghanistan."*
JOHN MCCAIN: "[...] There has been a rise in al Qaeda activity along the
border. There has been some increase in U.S. casualties. I am concerned
about it, but I'm not as concerned as I am about Iraq today, obviously, or
I'd be talking about Afghanistan. But I believe that if Karzai can make the
progress that he is making, that -- in the long term, we may muddle through
in Afghanistan."

*McCain says Czechoslovakia … AGAIN!*
JOHN MCCAIN: "I've suggested a long time ago a League of Democracies and
it's very clear that Russia and China and especially Russia will veto
significant measures, which would impact the behavior of the Iranians. And I
regret that. And I regret some of the recent behavior that Russia has
exhibited [...] including reduction in oil supplies to Czechoslovakia after
they agreed with us on missile defense system, et cetera."

*McPander says he'll fully fund Head Start even though he's voted against it
*
QUESTIONER: I work with Head Start workers and federal funding has not been
allocated to those workers. The congress has not approved the funding. The
workers are making minimal wages to provide educational opportunities to our
young people.
What are you going to do now, as a senator and go back and give the funding
that is needed so Head Start workers and families can receive the funds that
are needed to educate the poor?
JOHN MCCAIN: I obviously support Head Start programs. [...] I would be glad
to fully fund those programs, but there has to be monitoring. There has to
be measurable success. There has to be [...] a return on the taxpayers
dollars that these programs actually are beneficial and we need to review
them from time to time as to see how they can do a better job and there's no
reason--there's no reason why you should resent any scrutiny, any oversight
and any evaluation because I'll support the full funding, if you'll agree
with that. How's that?
QUESTIONER: I will agree that--
MCCAIN: Thank you!

*McCain calls immigration reform "top priority," promises "one single
comprehensive bill" that includes path to legalization *
QUESTIONER: [...] First of all, my father's a Korean war veteran and he and
I both would like to thank you for your service; all of your service. We
also want to be clear about the choice that we're making. You say you are
for comprehensive reform. You have also said that you want enforcement
first.
We are wondering, is this comprehensive reform include the 12 million
undocumented immigrants and will it be in one bill and will you do what
Senator Obama has said he will do is make this [...] a top priority in his
first year as president.
JOHN MCCAIN: [...] First of all, as I said in my remarks and I'll try to
make my answer brief, although it's a very important question, especially
for a lot of people in this room. If it wasn't my highest priority, I never
would have, at great risk, including to achieve the nomination of my party,
and risking alienating some parts of my own party, making it the highest
priority, sitting down with Senator Ted Kennedy and doing what Americans
want us to do and that's democrat and republican sitting down together and
working out solutions and working on your behalf and not putting the party
first and doing what I've always done is put my country first.
I'll say to you again, we had to take tough votes, we republicans and
democrats who joined together. Senator Obama went out, at the request of the
labor unions, and voted for amendments that would have killed the
legislation and that's a fact, sir. That's a fact.
I took tough votes. Of course, it was my top priority and it will be my top
priority. Otherwise I wouldn't have done what I did.
I think my actions speak for themselves. [...] My friends, why did we fail?
Why did we fail twice—not once, but twice—weeks of debate before the United
States senate and that's because many Americans remember that, in 1986, we
passed a law that gave amnesty to a couple of million people and we said we
would secure our borders and we didn't secure our borders. My friends,
Secretary Chertoff will tell you that there's two-million people of the 12
million who are in this country who have committed crimes in this country
and obviously we don't want those people in this country and I think we all
understand that and appreciate it.
We had a plan that—and still do—and it's comprehensive, but we do need to
have our borders secured, which we can do in fairly rapid fashion. So, if
we're gonna pass the legislation, we have to give the American people the
confidence that we're not only securing our borders because of the issue of
illegal immigration, but, my friends you know what's happening with the drug
traffic across our borders, which is killing young Americans. The drug
cartels, sir are moving drugs across into the United States of America. By
the way, I'm proud of President Calderon, who I recently met with.
I am very proud of the Merida Initiative, where we're gonna work together.
The United States of America and Mexico and we're gonna stop these drug
cartels and they're killing off Mexican police at great numbers, my friends
and they're doing terrible things. I work with the Mexican government. I
know them. We will stop it.
So you can have confidence it was my highest priority a couple years ago,
for years, and it's my top priority today. It'll be a top priority tomorrow
and I think I prove that in my actions and I hope you understand that and I
will vote against amendments such as those presented by Senator Obama on the
floor of the Senate and people in my own party on the floor of the senate
that would have killed that legislation. I'll oppose those kinds of
amendments [...]. [Pre-empting questioner's follow-up] Yes, yes, yes, yes.
QUESTIONER: One bill?!
MCCAIN: Yes sir.
QUESTIONER: One single bill.
MCCAIN: Of course.
QUESTIONER: With both the—that legalizes and provides the pathway to
citizenship for the undocumented—is that what you're saying? One single
bill.
MCCAIN: *One single comprehensive bill,* but first we have to assure the
American people that the borders are secure. We have to have that done and,
my friends, if you don't want to do that, then I have to tell ya, to bring
it up twice, we don't pass it. Then we don't pass the legislation. I mean,
it's not that any much more complicated than that and that's the reality,
but I guarantee you Americans are ready for comprehensive immigration reform
because they're sick and tired of the patchwork of laws.
Look—the great mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders is sitting right here and
I'll tell ya, he runs into this problem every day and there's nothing he's
told me he wants more than comprehensive immigration reform because he's
happy to do things that the federal government should have been doing a
long, long time ago. Am I right, mayor? Thank you, sir. Thank you and
congratulations on your recent re-election.

*McCain accidentally (and likely unknowingly) makes awkward Brokeback
Mountain reference to questioner in cowboy hat*
JOHN MCCAIN: "[...] So I want to tell you without getting uh, emotional
about it. But when I think about America, I'll think about you and your
wonderful partner there next to you and-- [laughter from the audience] err,
friend. [More laughter] A friend! Excuse me. Your friend next to you. I
[McCain hesitates] certainly didn't mean to get personal in any [more
laughter] conversation that you have.
"But I look at you both, I look at you both, and I see the face of America
and why these town hall meetings are so important. Because your question
wasn't an academic one."

*McCain: "I'm an unapologetic supporter of NAFTA"*
JOHN MCCAIN: "I recently traveled to Colombia and Mexico [APPLAUSE] because
I understand how vitally important it is to the prosperity and security of
our country to strengthen our trade, investment and diplomatic ties to other
countries in our hemisphere. I have often traveled over the years to Central
and South America, and I have learned our relationships there are as
important, if not more important, as any relationships we have in the world.
It is the reason why I'm an unapologetic supporter of NAFTA, the Central
American Free Trade Agreement, and the Colombian Free Trade Agreement, and
why I believe a hemispheric free trade agreement is a worthy and necessary
goal whose time has come."

*McCain: "You can't compete with other automobiles manufacturers if you lay
somebody off and pay them full salary for the rest of their life."*
AUDIENCE MEMBER: "After 9/11, the United States and the economy took a
tragic fall. [...] The American automotive industry was the first to stand
up and do something for our country. We provided rebates to get the economy
going again. And since then, we've continued giving rebates and giving our
products away for next to nothing to a point that our companies are now on a
very uneven path and our future is uncertain. I understand technology will
advance us, but when is the government going to stick up for the people that
first stepped up to put this country back on track after 9/11?"
JOHN MCCAIN: "Well first of all as I have said I would support tax credits
for Americans who choose to buy the Volt and other and other automobiles
that put us on the path to energy independence. I believe that the Federal
government should invest in pure research and development. I think as you
know one of the hurdles to development of any electric automobile is of
course the battery issue. [...] I'd be glad and would strongly support pure
research and development in the development of this battery with greater
capacity, less weight, and is more disposable. So, there are many ways that
I would be glad to support this industry.
"But at the end of the day, there are problems, some of which have been
addressed, between labor and management*. I have to give you some straight
talk. You can't compete with other automobile manufacturers if you lay
somebody off and pay them full salary for the rest of their life. Can't do
it. It's not going to be competitive*. So, I will do everything that I can
to support this industry."

*McCain on free trade: "I'm not that much of an expert" but "I believe in
free trade"*
AUDIENCE MEMBER: [...] My concern with the free trade is when we source to a
Canadian supplier who was our tier one source, and I have a part that has
three or four pieces that go together. Canadian law states that they must go
to a Canadian source in order to purchase their secondary pieces that go on
that part. Well, that doesn't seem fair trade to me then they're not allowed
to come to the US and get a better price so that we can have a reduction in
the part that I'm buying for my vehicle. What would you do to help us in
that area for free trade?
JOHN MCCAIN: "I would take them to the arbitration that is supposed to be
part of our free trade agreement -- the North American Free Trade Agreement
- where their violations, there's been cases concerning Canadian lumber and
there's been other cases. I would take them right to those arbitration
panels.
"*I think it also maybe in violation to the WTO agreement, but I'm not that
much of an expert*. But this seems to me clearly in violation of the
agreement that we made that we would have free and open markets for all of
our products between our two countries.
"I just want to assure you*, I believe in free trade*. But I don't believe
in the abuse of free trade. I don't believe that people should have special
advantages over American workers and over American products. And I will
exercise those capabilities that I have in order to reach arbitration and
reach fairness and justice for American workers and American products.
"And I also want to tell you the next China, the next toy that comes in from
China with arsenic on it may poison our young children will be the last toy
that came into the United States of America from China."

*McCain asked about preemptive war responds "I believe we were justified in
going into Iraq"*
AUDIENCE MEMBER: "This is on Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. We preemptively
went into Iraq. And not one terrorist came from Iraq. And now there's Iran*.
And you made sort of the joke of 'bomb bomb bomb Iran' -- I hope that was a
joke. And Osama's still running around somewhere. So, I wonder what your
feelings are on preemptively going into countries where we don't really like
the leader if they have oil or if they don't have oil. *And, what you plan
to do if you're President on going into Iran, not going to Iran, pulling out
of Iraq, not pulling out of Iraq, going into Afghanistan, or ay other
countries that you think you want to win wars with, and we lost Vietnam, you
said you knew how to win wars, we didn't win there. And I don't know if
winning wars is necessarily something that a President wants to do or should
do."
JOHN MCCAIN: "Well, thank you, you ask a very profound question and I
appreciate it. And I will again not try to give a long response because,
because we have other questions but since Americans are in harm's way and
Americans have made enormous sacrifice, I think it's worthy and the Iranian
threat and the situation in Afghanistan could lead to further greater
sacrifices
"I'd like to just say to you very- we are in a dangerous world. There's the
threat of radical Islamic extremism, which threatens everything we stand for
and believe in. This is an evil sometimes it's hard for us to comprehend and
they're active in a lot of places in the world, there is some information
they try to reestablish cells in the United States of America. Obviously,
there's some small success in Europe. It's an evil that's hard to encompass.
"Not long ago, al Qaeda took two mentally disabled young women, put suicide
vests on them, and sent them into a market place in Baghdad and by remote
control detonated those suicide vests. It's hard for us to encompass how
evil these people are. They like to cut off people's heads and put it out on
the Internet. [...] They're dedicated to the extinction of everything we
stand for and believe in.
"Now, *I believe we were justified in going into Iraq* based on the fact
that every intelligence agency in the world, including the United States of
America, believed that Saddam Hussein had nuclear weapons. He'd used them-
excuse me- weapons of mass destruction, and he had used them twice before
and there's no doubt about his willingness and desire to develop them and
use them again. The sanctions were breaking down, American planes were being
shot at, there's multi-billion dollar oil for food scandal in the UN, etc.
etc.
"But that's a history and that is for historians to argue about and I'll be
glad to have that discussion at some academic forum.
"But, we are there. And we went there and we were losing. And we were losing
badly. And I went over there early on and saw the strategy and said 'this
can't succeed, it's going to fail, we gotta change it.' I was criticized by
the Republicans for being disloyal. I said, at the darkest time in my
political aspirations for President I said we've got to send 'we've got to
Send 30,000 more troops over there.' Everybody- the political pundits and
others said the McCain campaign is dead. And, my friends, I would rather
lose a political campaign than lose a war. And I said we had to do this new
strategy and that is a strategy, it isn't just an injection of troops.
"And they have succeeded. They have succeeded. My friends, they have
succeeded. And I'd be glad to give you all the data to back that up.
"Now have we had victory, final victory? No. The al-Qaeda and others are
back on their heels but they still are intent on doing bad things. And
they'd love to try to resurrect their efforts. And they've still got the
Iranians who are exporting the most lethal explosive devices into Iraq that
is killing young Americans. And we've still got the Iranians [...] moving
forward with developing nuclear weapons. But in Iraq, we have a government
that is pretty effective. We have a justice system that is stumbling, and
hauntingly moving forward.
"And we have succeeded. I'm not saying we are succeeding- we have succeeded.
And we will -- we will- win this war. We will win this war if we don't do
what Senator Obama wanted to do -- that's set a date for withdrawal and
predicate it on a date and not conditions on the ground."

*McCain: "At the moment, I support stem cell research"*
QUESTIONER: What I wanted to ask you, Senator McCain is how do you feel on
the stem cell research, and uh, just how do you feel on the stem cell
research?
MCCAIN: Well, I feel that we should fund stem cell research. I do believe
that there is now new technology advances called. On skin cell, skin cell
research, which I hope will make this discussion an academic one. Because
we're now making dramatic advances in technologies that we will not have to
do stem cell research that other technologies will suffice. But at the
moment, I support stem cell research because of the incredible potential
that it has for curing some of the most terrible diseases that afflict
mankind.
