EDGE PROFILE Jeffrey Epstein is a financier and science philanthropist. He is President of the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation and currently serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Trust Company. Mr. Epstein started his career at Bear Stearns with an educational background in physics and mathematics. Mr. Epstein is the founder of the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard University. Established in 2003, the Program studies the evolution of microsystems and microbiology with the use of mathematics. Under the direction of Martin Nowak, Professor of Biology and Mathematics at Harvard University, the Program has developed critical mathematical models of how viruses and cancer cells evolve. Mr. Epstein founded the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation in 2000 to fund and support cutting edge science around the world. He is one of the largest supporters of individual scientists, including theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and Nobel Laureates Gerard `t Hoofi, David Gross and Frank Wilczek. His foundation also plays an active role in supporting education across the United States as well as philanthropy in the US Virgin Islands, where the foundation is based. Mr. Epstein is actively involved in the Santa Fe Institute, the Theoretical Biology Initiative at the Institute for Advanced Study, the Quantum Gravity Program and the University of Pennsylvania. He recently sat on the Mind, Brain and Behavior Committee at Harvard University. Mr. Epstein is a former member of the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, the New York Academy of Science and a former Rockefeller University Board Member.
