** Sumner Redstone... deposed
------------------------------------------------------------
Dylan Byers reports (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/06/media/sumner-redstone-testimony/index.html) from the halls of the L.A. County Superior Court:
The long awaited trial to determine whether media mogul Sumner Redstone is competent could be over in little more than a day. Judge David J. Cowan said today (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/06/media/sumner-redstone-testimony/index.html) that he would decide Monday whether to accept a motion by Redstone's attorneys to dismiss the case. Cowan's comments came after he listened to a video deposition. Redstone struggled to answer questions, but repeatedly used expletives to describe his ex-girlfriend Manuela Herzer. Read much more here... (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/06/media/sumner-redstone-testimony/index.html)
-- Context: Herzer has argued that Redstone was lacking mental capacity or was under undue influence when he ousted Herzer from control over his healthcare last fall...
-- What Dylan heard: The deposition video isn't being released, only a transcript. But Dylan could hear the video from his perch in the courthouse, and Redstone was "totally unintelligible. Just moans and grunts..."
"A very thin shadow" of former self
Quoting from Dylan's report: (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/06/media/sumner-redstone-testimony/index.html) Dr. Stephen Read, a psychiatrist who examined Redstone for Herzer's legal team, testified that Redstone's replies in the deposition were "stereotypical statements" Redstone made without seeming to think about them. In testimony that lasted well over an hour, Read described Redstone as "a very thin shadow" of his former self: suffering from dementia and delusions, completely unable to function on his own, and often angry or tearful at his physical and mental limitations."
-- A touching and sad vignette from today's hearing: Redstone loves betting on sports, but is too old to know which teams are playing, so his family members show him prerecorded games and let him win...
Trump says Joe's show is "rapidly fading"
Are Donald Trump and Joe Scarborough really fighting? Hmmm. Well they're at least acting like it. Today the two men had a Twitter spat, with Trump apparently objecting to Scarborough's remark on "Morning Joe" that "there is not a better time for someone to run as an independent candidate." Scarborough "initially endorsed Jeb Bush and Jeb crashed, then John Kasich and that didn't work," Trump tweeted. "Not much power or insight!" Then (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/06/media/donald-trump-joe-scarborough-morning-joe/index.html?iid=SF_LN) he said "Morning Joe" is "rapidly fading."
Scarborough reacted to Trump the way Trump typically responds to critics: by citing his popularity. "'Rapidly fading?' Umm... we are enjoying our best ratings ever." That's true -- "Morning Joe" set a new ratings record in Q1. Here's my full story with Frank Pallotta... (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/06/media/donald-trump-joe-scarborough-morning-joe/index.html?iid=SF_LN)
"Haldeman and Ehrlichman"
"Mike Bloomberg has a fun pet name for the pair of journalists who are the face of his company's politics coverage: "Haldeman and Ehrlichman." Yep, Hadas Gold and Joe Pompeo's sources (http://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2016/05/michael-bloombergs-nicknames-for-halperin-and-heilemann-haldeman-and-erlichman-222896) said Bloomberg described Mark Halperin and John Heilemann that way at a corporate town hall yesterday. (Even if you think it... Why say it out loud?)
Bloomberg also (http://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2016/05/michael-bloombergs-nicknames-for-halperin-and-heilemann-haldeman-and-erlichman-222896#ixzz47vX1RRN6) "mused that he bets Halperin and Heilemann will write a book about the election next year." I continue to believe that MSNBC's re-air of "With All Due Respect" is a transition plan... With Halperin and Heilemann moving full-time to MSNBC/NBC News after the election...
FCC approves Charter-Time Warner Cable deal
Per the WSJ: (http://www.wsj.com/articles/fcc-approves-charter-purchase-of-time-warner-cable-1462563847) "The FCC said Friday it had formally voted to approve Charter Communications' acquisition of Time Warner Cable, creating a telecommunications giant while imposing tough operating restrictions on it."
The DOJ has also signed off. So now Charter just needs the California Public Utilities Commission to bless the deal at a hearing on May 12. The deal will most likely close by the end of the month... Which made this afternoon's Time Warner Cable presentation to advertisers sorta odd. The TWC brand was front and center the whole time... But the logo and name are about to be retired. Charter's Spectrum brand is going to take over.
-- Related: TWC's presentation was a challenge to YouTube... AdWeek has details... (http://www.adweek.com/news/television/time-warner-cable-media-pushes-back-after-youtubes-bold-claim-about-audience-reach-171330)
Oaktree wants Tribune/Gannett talks
Oaktree Capital Management, Tribune Publishing's second-largest shareholder, says TribPub should "pursue discussions with Gannett to see if an acceptable agreement can be reached." OakTree said so in an SEC filing this afternoon...
This Sunday on "Reliable Sources"
Who got Trump wrong? Who got it right? And what sources are reliable as we head into the general election? That's our focus on Sunday morning's show. Kayleigh McEnany, Matt Lewis, Joseph Borelli, and Ben Howe will join me... Along with Norm Ornstein and Dana Milbank... And Time magazine editor Nancy Gibbs.
Gibbs co-wrote the book "The Presidents Club," about all the post-WW2 presidents, so I'm going to ask her to picture President Trump added to this scene...
Speaking of Norm Ornstein...
Vox's Andrew Prokop published this Q&A with Ornstein today. (http://www.vox.com/2016/5/6/11598838/donald-trump-predictions-norm-ornstein) Title: "The political scientist who saw Trump's rise coming."
"I would say this is a self-inflicted wound by Republican leaders," Ornstein says... (http://www.vox.com/2016/5/6/11598838/donald-trump-predictions-norm-ornstein)
Road to 2016
Jared Kushner's new assignment
Ashley Parker scoops: (http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2016/05/06/trump-asks-his-son-in-law-jared-kushner-to-plan-for-a-transition-team/) Trump "has asked his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to begin quietly working to put together a blueprint for a transition team should he win the White House in November." Kushner is, among other things, the publisher of The New York Observer. For your weekend reading: Devin Leonard's Bloomberg profile of Kushner... Obama's message for the media
When President Obama was asked about Donald Trump this afternoon, his answer was a media critique. "He has a long record that needs to be examined, and I think it's important for us to take seriously the statements he’s made in the past. But most importantly -- and I speak to all of you in this room as reporters, as well as the American public -- I just want to emphasize the degree to which we are in serious times and this is a really serious job. This is not entertainment. This is not a reality show. This is a contest for the presidency of the United States. And what that means is that every candidate, every nominee needs to be subject to exacting standards and genuine scrutiny..."
POTUS: We can't afford "circus" coverage
What the president said (https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2016/05/06/remarks-president-economy) -- without saying it -- is that as long as the American people are able to consume substantive reporting, they'll elect Hillary Clinton. He said:
"The one thing that I'm going to really be looking for over the next six months is that the American people are effectively informed about where candidates stand on the issues, what they believe, making sure that their numbers add up, making sure that their policies have been vetted and that candidates are held to what they’ve said in the past. And if that happens, then I'm confident our democracy will work... What I'm concerned about is the degree to which reporting and information starts emphasizing the spectacle and the circus, because that's not something we can afford. And the American people, they’ve got good judgment, they’ve got good instincts, as long as they get good information."
Brian Lowry on "bonkers" dramas colliding with reality
Brian Lowry emails: "With 'The Good Wife' about to end (and look for a piece assessing its finale on Sunday night) and 'Scandal' preparing for its season finale, this seemed like a good time to take stock of today’s political dramas. Specifically, how the current election season has caught up with them — and made their customary exaggerations look less bonkers." Don't miss Brian's column... Click here to read it... ** Super weekend for "Captain America?"
------------------------------------------------------------
Frank Pallotta emails: "Captain America: Civil War" opens this weekend, bringing together the two pillars of Disney’s nearly $9 billion Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man and Captain America, as adversaries rather than allies. "Civil War" looks to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, with analysts projecting an opening weekend around $200 million. (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/06/media/captain-america-civil-war-box-office-opening-day/index.html?iid=SF_LN) Some have gone even higher with predictions of $215 million – that’s "Jurassic World" territory, a/k/a the second biggest box office opening ever.
So far it has brought in a healthy $25 million on Thursday night and $316.2 million worldwide since opening overseas last week.
The film, which I saw on Monday, is more than just an explosive fistfight between the two men in tights. It’s instead a critically acclaimed film (with a 92% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes) that explores the family dynamic of the Marvel heroes (all 13 of them) in a very fun way.
Stay tuned to CNNMoney (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/06/media/captain-america-civil-war-box-office-opening-day/index.html?iid=SF_LN) all weekend for box office updates... ** Welcome to summer movie season!
------------------------------------------------------------
Frank writes: “Civil War” ushers in my favorite time of the year, summer movie season. This summer is jammed packed with family film fare, reboots, sequels, and even requels (is that a word?), so moviegoers have their pick at the cineplex. Here’s a brief list of the upcoming tentpoles in the warm (or at least we hope it’ll be warm!) summer months:
"Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” – May 20
“X-Men: Apocalypse” – May 27
“Alice Through the Looking Glass” – May 27
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” – June 3
