Nothing illustrates the impact of the Jewish brain drain from Europe to the U.S. more dramatically than nuclear research. In 1939, American scientists began setting up a project to exploit the newly discovered fission process for military purposes. At the urging of his fellow scientists, Albert Einstein approached President Roosevelt, explaining the unbelievable military potential of the atomic bomb, while also pointing out the dangers of nuclear research conducted in Nazi Germany. Einstein’s warning resulted in the Manhattan Project and the development of the American atomic bomb. The project was run by Robert Oppenheimer, himself an American of German Jewish descent. Many of the scientists working on the Manhattan Project were Jewish Americans or Jewish refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe. Nobel laureate Niels Bohr, who was half Jewish and had escaped from his native Denmark, worked on the development of the bomb as well. He was assisted by his son Aage Bohr (a future Nobel Prize winner) and the Jewish Hungarian Edward Teller (who would later lead the development of the hydrogen bomb). They were joined by Felix Bloch, another future Jewish Nobel laureate. Los Alamos in New Mexico, where the research took place, was simply packed with current and future Nobel laureates. Nuclear weapons would have almost certainly been used against the Third Reich, if it hadn’t already surrendered by the time the Americans produced their first nukes. In 1977, Albert Speer commented, “History is fraught with irony. The opportunities offered by a German atomic bomb were destroyed by Hitler himself, who regarded Einstein’s ideas and nuclear research in general as ‘Jewish science.’ This is why we didn’t have a cyclotron or something similar. We simply failed to use the lead in atomic research achieved before the war....” Germany owed its leading position to the work done by many brilliant Jewish scientists who fled Nazi Germany in the mid-30s and often went on to develop the American atomic bomb. Ironically, many of the top atomic scientists in the Soviet Union were also of Jewish extraction. German anti-Semitism both seriously depleted the country’s scientific potential and vastly increased that of the allies. The Americans, for example, warmly welcomed William F. Friedman, leader of the team that solved the Japanese PURPLE cipher machine, which provided great insight into German and Japanese policy. By contrast, the Germans never managed to break any of the major military codes used by the allies, and their intelligence-gathering effort was basically a failure.
