Washington D.C. - On the first anniversary of the signing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act <http://www.recovery.gov/Pages/home.aspx> that the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office found has so far resulted in up to 2.4 million jobs <http://links.mkt2079.com/ctt?kn=34&m=2799633&r=MTMyNDYxMjYyNTIS1&b=0&j= MTcxNTk4MzEzS0&mt=1&rt=0> , Americans United for Change wondered if U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) is still trying to take credit for the jobs created in North Carolina by the President's economic recovery plan -- after harshly criticizing and voting against it. In 2009, AUFC waged a wide scale media campaign <http://www.jobsandeconomicrecovery.com/er> and helped lead a major coalition of organizations urging Congress to pass the Recovery Act, which only three Republican Senators stepped forward to support on behalf of their struggling constituents. The Hickory Daily Record <http://www2.hickoryrecord.com/content/2009/oct/16/2-million-fight-fires /news-local/> reports that Burr appeared in Bethlehem, North Carolina, to deliver ARRA funds <http://www2.hickoryrecord.com/content/2009/oct/16/2-million-fight-fires /news-local/> for a fire station there: This summer, the department applied for and won a $2,008,515 federal grant that will pay for a new 19,000-square-foot fire station. On Friday, U.S. Sen. Richard Burr was in Bethlehem to present the grant to the department. * Senator Burr Voted Against The Recovery Package Twice [Record Vote 59 <http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cf m.cfm?congress=111&session=1&vote=00059> ; Record Vote 60 <http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cf m.cfm?congress=111&session=1&vote=00060> ] -Senator Burr slammed the stimulus on Fox News: "This isn't a stimulus package, this is a spending package." [Fox News, 3/1/09 <http://www.thehopeforamerica.com/play.php?id=269> ] Tom McMahon, Acting Executive Director, Americans United for Change: "How do we know the President's economic recovery plan is working to create jobs and stabilize the economy? Just ask a Congressional Republican that showed up to a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new bridge, road or rail project or issued a press release praising stimulus money putting more teachers in the classrooms and more cops and fire fighters on the streets in their districts. Over 100 Republican lawmakers, including Richard Burr, have been caught talking out both sides of their mouth - voting against the Recovery Act and then turning around and taking credit for the jobs it created back home, like the construction surrounding a new fire station in Bethlehem. The plain fact of the matter is if Richard Burr had had his way, up to 2.4 million Americans would be without jobs today. Senator Burr does deserve plenty of credit however for being party to the worst rash of political two-facedness in recent memory and enabling the failed Bush-era policies that got us into this mess to begin with."
