** Morley Safer, 1931-2016
------------------------------------------------------------
Morley Safer died this morning. He was the longest-serving correspondent in "60 Minutes" history. 46 years, 919 reports. Simply awe-inspiring.
No one wanted to say it last week, when CBS announced his retirement, but it was clear that Safer's health had taken a turn for the worse this year. He was thrilled to read all the kind words written about him on the day of the announcement, and he was able to watch Sunday's hour-long retrospective about his career from home.
-- Tom Kludt published this story with five of Safer's most memorable segments (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/19/media/morley-safer-top-stories/index.html?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) . He emails: "What I like best about the list is that it shows Safer's breadth. Whether it was exposing governmental lies or ridiculing the highfalutin art world, he could do it all."
-- From the "Encyclopedia of Television News:" Safer's "1965 film report showing a marine at Cam Ne setting a hut on fire with a cigarette lighter almost single handedly ushered in the era known as 'the living room war.' President Lyndon Johnson was irate over the negative publicity Safer created concerning the Vietnam War and unsuccessfully pressured CBS to censor him."
One of the last links to "60" origins
Brian Lowry notes (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/19/media/morley-safer-last-links-to-60-minutes-heyday/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) that Safer's death at the age of 84 severs one of the last remaining links to the early days of "60 Minutes." Of the original team members -- Harry Reasoner, Mike Wallace, Dan Rather and Ed Bradley and producer Don Hewitt -- only Rather is still with us. Safer actually joined the program in 1970, two years after launch, but his name became synonymous with "60." Read Lowry's reflections here... (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/19/media/morley-safer-last-links-to-60-minutes-heyday/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
"He set the standard"
-- Les Moonves statement: "Morley was one of the most important journalists in any medium, ever."
-- Dan Rather tweets: "Reflecting with sadness on the news of Morley Safer's passing. Superb reporter, writer and chronicler of his times."
-- Anderson Cooper emails: (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/19/media/morley-safer-death/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "He was an extraordinary writer and reporter, and a true gentleman. From his work during the War in Vietnam to his completely unique and evocative pieces for 60 Minutes, he set the standard for what we all want to be as journalists. His kind shall not pass this way again."
UT-Austin to house Safer's papers
CBS New York reporter Tony Aiello tweeted (https://twitter.com/AielloTV/status/733378433531695105?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) this peek inside Safer's office. "His papers destined for archive at UT-Austin," he says...
Tribune chair turns tables: We'll buy Gannett!
Dylan Byers emails: You've got to at least admire the moxie: Tribune Publishing chairman Michael Ferro has responded to Gannett's takeover proposal by dreaming up a bid to take over Gannett -- a pipe dream. "On Tuesday, Ferro told a gathering of some five dozen L.A. Times sales staffers he was working on a bid to take over Gannett," Ken Doctor reports. (http://www.capitalnewyork.com/article/media/2016/05/8599610/tribune-chair-sell-gannett-well-buy-gannett?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "'I am going to bid on Gannett,' he told the group, according to a confidential source. 'I have lawyers working on it.'" Ferro actually does have lawyers working on it, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. Gannett's current market value is $1.84 billion, and they're most recent offer to Tribune of $15-per-share already puts a 99% premium on Trib's current value...
For the record
-- Tom Kludt notes: Prosecutors finally dropped their B.S. charges against Ryan Reilly and Wesley Lowery stemming from their arrests in Ferguson almost two years ago... (HuffPost (http:// http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/ryan-reilly-ferguson-arrest-st-louis-county_us_573cb0eae4b0646cbeebce8a?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) )
-- The Village Voice announced today that it has a new publisher: Suzan Gursoy, who most recently served in the same role at Adweek...
--In this wonderful THR interview with (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/legendary-editor-harry-evans-has-894692?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) Harry Evans, he says "with all the fragmentation of reporting and opinion, we've lost something important. The institutionalized weight of the press used to make a difference. It used to mean something if the Times or the WashPost weighed in on an issue. Now it doesn't matter..." (THR (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/legendary-editor-harry-evans-has-894692?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) )
-- Don't miss this in Vogue:"Have Female Journalists Ended the Boys-on-the-Bus Era of Campaign Reporting?" (http://www.vogue.com/13436451/campaign-reporting-politics-female-journalists/?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) (Vogue (http://www.vogue.com/13436451/campaign-reporting-politics-female-journalists/?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) )
Megyn Kelly skewered
Tom Kludt emails: Megyn Kelly is accustomed to flattering headlines and glowing profiles. But that wasn't the response she got for her much-ballyhooed prime time interview with Donald Trump. Many media critics thought Kelly went soft on him. If Kelly was as bothered and hurt by the insults hurled her way by Trump and his trolls, then why was she laughing with him about it on national TV? Those critics provoked Kelly's wrath in a way that Trump didn't. Last night, she fired back at them -- Erik Wemple, Jim Warren, Amy Davidson, among others.
This morning, she sent out a mocking tweet aimed at Trevor Noah, who skewered the interview last night: "So grateful I have men like Trevor Noah to advise on how to deal w/gender attacks -- I'm sure his life experience far better than mine on this!" Here's Tom's story... (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/19/media/megyn-kelly-trevor-noah-donald-trump/index.html?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
-- Kelly's "brand" is partly about unpredictability, right? I still subscribe to this theory, which Callum Borchers brought up: (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/05/18/after-barbara-walters-esque-donald-trump-interview-megyn-kelly-no-longer-such-a-media-darling/?tid=sm_tw&mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "Kelly seemed to view Tuesday's interview as a bridge to other — presumably newsier — interviews in the future... Kelly believed there could be no hard-hitting interviews on her prime-time show (which Trump was boycotting) without repairing their professional rapport first..."
"Jackie" created fake persona?
T. Rees Shapiro's latest for the WashPost: (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2016/05/18/lawyers-in-rolling-stone-lawsuit-file-new-evidence-that-jackie-created-fake-persona/?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "New evidence shows that a University of Virginia student who alleged that she was gang raped at a campus fraternity created the fake persona of the alleged ringleader of the attack, according to lawyers representing a U-Va. official who is suing Rolling Stone magazine for defamation." Lots of new information here... (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2016/05/18/lawyers-in-rolling-stone-lawsuit-file-new-evidence-that-jackie-created-fake-persona/?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
-- I second Michael Smerconish's tweet: (https://twitter.com/smerconish/status/733312706619543552?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "I sure hope @TReesShapiro writes a book on @UVA @RollingStone 'Jackie' fake rape case - he's been all over it where other media let it go"
Early preview of Sunday's show
The lineup is still coming together, but on Sunday's "Reliable Sources" I'll be joined by WashPost editor Marty Baron, former Post reporter Carl Bernstein, former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, and many more...
"Trending" on Facebook
The status of Facebook's investigation
Facebook said last week that it is conducting a full investigation into the allegations of biased behavior by managers of the "Trending" topics box. What's the status of that investigation? Will the company release the results publicly? I keep asking... No comment from the company so far...
Like the "Salem Witch Trial?'
Dylan reports: (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/19/media/glenn-beck-facebook-hiring-quotas/index.html?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) Glenn Beck is criticizing fellow conservatives for their response to Facebook's alleged suppression of right-wing news outlets. In a post on his website, (http://www.glennbeck.com/2016/05/19/what-disturbed-glenn-about-the-facebook-meeting/?utm_source=Medium&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=Medium-post20160519&mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) Beck, who attended the big Facebook meeting yesterday, chastised some attendees for making demands — based off of one unproven accusation — that he likened to "affirmative action for conservatives."
"The overall tenor, to me, felt like the Salem Witch Trial: 'Facebook, you must admit that you are screwing us, because if not, it proves you are screwing us,'" Beck wrote. Check out Dylan's full story here... (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/19/media/glenn-beck-facebook-hiring-quotas/index.html?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
"A closed chat with elites"
Did Facebook blow an opportunity? Time's Khan Shoieb thinks Zuck (http://time.com/4341571/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-conservatives-meeting/?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "should have had an open conversation with users, not a closed chat with elites."
Shoieb writes: (http://time.com/4341571/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-conservatives-meeting/?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "It's a move that cuts decidedly against the democratizing, user-centered values that underpin Facebook's brand, and looks instead like a symptom of one of the most disruptive tech companies in the world starting to mimic the interest group entanglement of traditional corporations... It was a missed opportunity to broadcast Facebook’s stated mission of giving everyone a voice."
Quote of the day
"This is a reality show. If you've watched any reality shows, you know the quiet people get knocked out very early in the race. The loud people are the ones who make it to the end. Donald Trump reminds me of Richard Hatch from the first season of Survivor. He came on, caused chaos, got naked, formed a few key alliances and walked away with the prize."
--Trevor Noahin this excellent Playboy interview... (http://www.playboy.com/articles/playboy-interview-trevor-noah?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
John Cena enters a new ring: The ESPYs
Frank Pallotta emails: WWE wrestler John Cena will be your host for this year’s ESPYs on July 13, and before you scroll down to the next story, let me quickly explain to you why that’s important. Cena entering the ESPY ring broadens Cena’s brand (remember, he was pretty funny in this summer’s “Trainwreck”) while also helping ESPN/ABC tap into a different type of sport fan, like the hard-to-reach demo of men 18 to 34 who make up a big portion of the WWE’s base. As a devotee to the WWE, I’ll be watching to see if Cena pulls it off and if Seth Rollins hits him with a metal chair halfway through when the audience's back is turned...
The CW gets super
Frank emails: Broadcast upfronts week came to an end today with The CW showcasing a literally "super" lineup for its upcoming 10th season on the air. The network announced that "Supergirl," which flew over from sister network CBS, will join its other DC shows like "Arrow," "The Flash," and "Legends of Tomorrow" in a mega four-way crossover event. (sound familiar, Marvel Cinematic Universe?)
The CW president Mark Pedowitz said that the adventures of Kara Zor-El belong at The CW, and he’s right. With the popular DC lineup and its announcement of teenage drama, "Riverdale," based on Archie comics, it appears comic books are to The CW what the city of Chicago is to NBC.
-- Related: Joe Adalian warns (http://www.vulture.com/2016/05/cw-is-a-tv-success-story.html?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) the superhero network to not overdo it with the caped crusaders, or it may prove to one day be the network’s kryptonite: "They've given the network buzz, ratings and, yes, an identity. But they’re now 40 percent of the network’s lineup. That's a lot!" Adalian wrote. (http://www.vulture.com/2016/05/cw-is-a-tv-success-story.html?mc_cid=75f191f4da&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "If viewers suddenly feel like they’ve seen this all before, it’s not hard to imagine a tipping point where all the DC shows suddenly collapse..."
