campaign ad that mocks Barack Obama as Moses. "We're having fun," he added,
"and enjoying it." Presumably, the fun resided in the advertisement's
portrait of the Democrat before worshipful crowds, a dishonest use of
Obama's own self-mockery, and a clip of Charlton Heston parting the Red Sea.
When explaining himself, though, McCain did not seem to be having fun.
Called upon to defend the ad, there was a snide, unhappy edge to his now
familiar smile, which combines a sinister inauthenticity with nervous
insecurity. McCain's grimace is to smiling what his ad is to humor.

face of $4-a-gallon gas and other energy concerns, giving Republicans a rare
opening to go on the offensive against congressional Democrats and Sen.
Barack Obama (D-Ill.). Nearly two-thirds of Americans now put a priority on
"finding new sources of energy" over improving conservation -- a significant
shift since 2001 -- and majorities support all of the five potential federal
initiatives tested in a new ABC News poll.
