KEY BLOCK----- By Brian Stelter and the CNNMoney Media team - [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) ** Imagine Sumner Redstone on the stand... ------------------------------------------------------------ Editor Mark Mooney emails: A California judge ruled today (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/judge-rules-sumner-redstone-trial-888276?mc_cid=4da261cfbb&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) that Sumner Redstone’s competency trial will be public – and the ruling may have created new pressure for a settlement. The trial is set for next Friday, May 6, and could be embarrassing for the 92-year-old Viacom and CBS owner, whose infirmities include being unable to speak coherently. Lawyers for Redstone’s ex-girlfriend Manuela Herzer will likely try to insist that Redstone appear in court. Herzer claims that Redstone was not competent to dismiss her as his healthcare proxy. A settlement was announced last month, but collapsed when Herzer’s team believed they had evidence that Viacom officials had been keeping his true condition from the board. Now the trial is just days away and would likely provide daily headlines. Settlement anyone? ** Standing by for Comcast/DreamWorks news ------------------------------------------------------------ Comcast won't confirm anything, but all signs point to the company possibly buying DreamWorks Animation for $3+ billion. Jeffrey Katzenberg is expected to leave if the deal gets done, according to the WSJ (http://www.wsj.com/articles/dreamworks-ceo-will-leave-company-if-comcast-deal-completed-1461787157?mc_cid=4da261cfbb&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) , and "it is unclear what he might do if he leaves DreamWorks." So will it get done? DreamWorks deal talks have fallen apart before, but "this time it's different," THR says. (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/dreamworks-comcast-deal-time-888345?mc_cid=4da261cfbb&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "The acquisition of DreamWorks Animation would fit squarely into the entertainment strategy, allowing Comcast to build on an already successful part of the company," the NYT adds (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/28/business/media/dreamworks-deal-would-serve-comcasts-entertainment-strategy.html?mc_cid=4da261cfbb&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) . I wrote a whole column about the scene. (http://money.cnn.com/2016/04/27/media/donald-trump-time-100/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=4da261cfbb&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) Trump was definitely in his element, in the same room as Caitlyn Jenner, Rand Paul, Karlie Kloss, Nick Kristof, David Koch, and Samantha Power. I didn't see any of them say hello to the GOP frontrunner. But RNC chairman Reince Priebus repeatedly came over to chat. After Ariana Grande performed and dinner was served, a crowd formed around Trump immediately. Martha Stewart leaned over a railing to greet him… Emily Smith and Keith Kelly of the NY Post took notes… Charlie Rose and Gayle King both pressed him to come on "CBS This Morning" (in person; no phone calls)… And I showed him primary results on my phone. "Over 60%?" he asked. Read all about it here... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tU-D-m2JY8&mc_cid=4da261cfbb&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) In this four-minute video by Just Not Sports (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tU-D-m2JY8&mc_cid=4da261cfbb&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) , "REAL guys read REAL comments made about sports reporters Sarah Spain and Julie DiCaro – to their face. These fans learn some tweets are #MoreThanMean – they’re harassment." The video -- produced on Sunday and posted on Tuesday -- now has more than 1.6 million YouTube views. "I had no idea it would blow up like this," Spain told ex-ESPNer Josh Elliott on CBSN today. (http://www.cbsnews.com/live/video/men-read-real-mean-tweets-about-women-in-sports/?mc_cid=4da261cfbb&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) Elliott said to his other guest, CBS Sports Network's Dana Jacobson, "This is where our lives as colleagues doing the same exact thing just absolutely diverge." Online harassment isn't gender-specific, but the tone and volume of harassment toward women is different. -- More: Spain asks in this espnW essay: (http://espn.go.com/espnw/voices/article/15412369/women-sports-media-ignore-abuse?mc_cid=4da261cfbb&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "You wouldn't defend someone calling a woman at the bar something repulsive, and you wouldn't defend an employee threatening the life of a co-worker at the office. So why is harassment on Twitter something that must simply be accepted?" ** YouTube CEO on gender inequality ------------------------------------------------------------ In recent years, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has voiced her concerns about gender inequality in the tech industry. When I taped an interview with her recently, I asked if she perceives progress being made. "I wish I could say yes," she said. "I think there's a lot of awareness about that issue right now, which is great," but not as much action. She has a similar view about the male-exec-dominated media biz. Watch our conversation here... "That said, it's all extremely weird." What makes it even weirder: Greenwald is involved with a competing project at Sony... Here's an example of how it works: The Brady Campaign is also circulating a petition calling on news organizations to avoid showing and naming shooters. This project, dubbed "Zero Minutes of Fame," is independent of the "No Notoriety" campaign, but carries a similar message. Details... Following a pattern that has played out repeatedly throughout the litigation, the trial judge had denied Gawker's motions -- but she was overturned by an appeals court. As Gawker sees it, the documents prove Hogan's real motivation behind the lawsuit: not because he was aggrieved by publication of his sex tape, but rather to suppress a racist rant that was on another recording. Gawker said in a statement that the unsealed papers "show how Hogan engaged in a massive cover up, denying under oath that he knew about the tape with his racist rant despite clear evidence proving he did." Hogan's team was dismissive. "One has to wonder what [Gawker's] true motive may be, because it isn't relevant for any legitimate purpose," the wrestler's lawyer David Houston said in a statement.
