As the world's population ages, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's,
and others affect more and more people around the world. Few of us have been exempt
from the devastating physical and emotional blows patients and their families experience
when faced with these debilitating diseases. But at Hebrew University's Edmond and Lily
Safra Center for Brain Sciences, researchers are making huge strides in the fight against
neurodegenerative disorders:
• Early detection breakthrough — A new diagnostic tool developed by . student
Suaad Abd-Elhadi allows for earlier detection of Parkinson's giving new hope to
those suffering from the disease.
• Groundbreaking Alzheimer's drugs — HU Professor Marta Weinstock-Rosin
(inventor of Exelon, a drug that improves memory and slows its decline in people
with Alzheimer's) has since co-developed a novel neuroprotective drug that blocks

brain degeneration and memory impairment. She continues to advance the science
pushing toward an outright cure.
• Revolutionary brain disease treatments — Collaborating with researchers at the
startup company TyrNovo, Hebrew University's Dr. Ehud Cohen and Professor
Alexander Levitzki found a compound that inhibits the toxic proteins associated
with Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases — an important first step
toward finding a cure.
