How's life at the Gansevoort? la Um, well, I went upstate with some Russian people. It was nice. JD Upstate New York? ill Yeah. Urn, so we spend time there. And then I have a girlfriend she says, "come to my place." She rents her place on Airbnb. On the lower east side. So I pack my stuff and I went to her place and there was no A/C. JD These last few days...no a/c? -. So I couldn't stay there. So I went to...I try Rivington hotel for a night. Now I'm at Bowery. JD You're doing what I did that summer — you're trying all these different places. So what's your favorite? I don't mind Bowery actually. It has a good vibe which is nice. I don't know. Where was your favorite hotel? JD I like the suites at the Waldorf ... JD [JD discusses various hotels he has stayed at and which he likes) 21:58 ■ When I went to Rivington, I walked in and I saw my girlfriend, she works there. She works with clients. JD The Irvington? • The Rivington JD I don't know it. Downtown? ■ It's downtown. On the lower east side. And she gave me a very, very good price for a suite. It was like on the top floor. Practically the whole floor, glass instead of (UI). And on 171° floor, so I can see the whole of Manhattan... JD So why did you move? You found it. I had a reservation at the Bowery the next day. And ah, it was nice. At night you can see the whole city. I think it's one of the things in New York you can enjoy if you have a nice view at night. Which I never (UI). It's nice. It's very peaceful. At the hotel (UI) 23:05 JD When did you decide to darken? ■ I went today and I said, you know, because I've been in the sun so long they were getting lighter and I was like, can you add something to make it a little darker. I guess my hair is so dry from being in the sun it just absorbed really fast. But it's not the color. It's going to wash out JD I remember when you went blond too. Which was dramatic also. But, ah, I think your natural brown is actually the nicest. I My natural is the best. I don't want to (UI) anymore JD I agree. Um, I haven't felt great about the whole process over the last couple of months. Um...You're someone that I cared about and I still care about. Um, so I never quite understood why you just didn't come to me and say you wanted some help. As opposed to threats and so forth. Um, but I felt bad also last meeting...One, I think I did most of the talking. So I thought I should listen more. Um...what's kind of come through...um...I don't know if you remember the history...of course you do. You know what M.A.D is? M.A.D? What's that? JD So, when the Soviet Union and the US both developed nuclear wea ons...atomic wea ns...ah... 25:15 [Waiter interrupts) 25:31 JD So they both convinced each other that they could hurt each other. Um, and, they both got to a point of M.A.D. JD Assured Destruction. OK [Both chuckle] JD And... I was joking to someone that I was in the middle of World War 4 right now JD And they got to that point and kind of said, ok, we now know we can both destroy each. Let's see if there are rational, reasonable ways that we can coexist um...and get a lot of what we both need. And so, you know, I think we're at the point...we know that you can hurt me. You can hurt my family. You can hurt (UI). Um, you know, I can live through if I have to. But I'd rather not go that route. But I think you know, um, you can end up with nothing or worse. Um, and obviously that's your decision to take. But, there's no question we can hurt each other. As with the Soviet Union and the US, I hope we come to the conclusion that those aren't sensible pathways. Um...and that we've gotta find ways that we both can have some of what we need. And, peacefully coexist. So that was what I hoped we could work on. Um, even if it takes a little time. Um, I mean, you have the ability to pull the trigger any time you want. Whether it's today, next month, the month after, but I think it's worth both our whiles to try to reach a better place. So, you know, one of things I wanted to try to do as I said, I did a lot of the talking, I'd like to hear more. I mean, to me, the number you threw out - $100 million — didn't make much sense. In terms of me. It's a number. It's a nice get rich quick um, number but in terms of security and comfort over a long period, urn, I'm not sure why that's a relevant number. So I'd like to understand more from you what your needs really are and how can I be helpful in fulfilling them. /9: 11 I think I kind of made it very clear that I'm very, very upset emotionally, you know, that our relationship didn't work. I don't know um, (UI) I really (UI). It feels to me that I will never be able to trust anybody because I was young and, you were married. I knew it wasn't going to go anywhere. I think we spoke about it. It's a problem. It's really, really a problem. And ah, urn...(long pause)... Um, also I made it kind of clear that urn, I think some people who know about our relationship and it affects me and my son and I'm not very confident that I can have the same career opportunities as I had before I met you. Um, and even though I'm really, really upset, I don't want to fight with you. I don't want to hurt. I don't want to do anything you know, that's not good for you also. (UI) 3 1. 16 JD So, again, what are your needs that I can be helpful with? Like, I really tried when I kind of came up with my last proposal. I tried to give a long term period with (UI) for most people a million dollars a year after tax generally takes care of being able to live comfortably, and have a sense of security and I wanted to try and help you with your visa too. So certainly, it was on my part it was a good faith attempt to address some of the needs you outlined and especially um, in terms of you and living comfortably P:30 This is kind of the issue we have, right? I want to feel financially stable you la know because I have a lot of other issues. Maybe I'm getting paranoid sometimes, I don't know. Urn, I have to figure out what I want to do, how I want to pursue it. You know, I have to make sure my son studies well and feels comfortable. I mean again, it should have...I would have thought it would have shown you that I care about you when, a year ago, when you had to leave, I said "I'm sorry you have to leave, I'm going to give you a million dollars to get settled" and you hadn't even asked me for anything at that time and it was a lot more than (UI) had ever done before but I felt bad that you had to leave frankly. And you settling down in a new place and having a good sense of (UT) urn, so you knew you were getting a million and I gave you half a million when you left and then there were three payments after that the rest of the year. Why didn't you rent a place in Moscow when you moved to Moscow? I was a little surprised the last time we got together when you compared yourself to Nicolas Baku and that you were living out of hotels for the whole year. Why? 35:50 ■ I rented a place in Moscow. And, then I started having problems in my school and my son had problems in his school. And, I think it's all related to my relationships. And, I was running away from issues in New York that I had here. And urn, I find the same thing and...When I was moving to London I already knew that I can't escape it, this is gonna probably (UI). When I was living in NY I sort of thought it would stop but it didn't (UI). 36:37 JD Again, see I find this, and I'm not even not (UI). Number one, I've always cared about you. You're someone that I liked, I cared about, you're beautiful, you're smart. I respected you. MI But why... JD I mean, you really should know I've never badmouthed you to anybody. I would never do that. a But... JD And, and I've never talked to anyone about you. ill But were you aware that this is happening. That my son and me were getting attacked? JD No, I was not aware of that. No. I was not aware of that. 38:00 [Long pause] 38:08 JD If you were attacked, I am sorry, but I don't think that had much to do with me. But it doesn't mean I don't care about you and want you to be secure and comfortable. [Pause] ■ I am really scared um, because I really don't understand who has been doing, but I have a sick feeling about you. Yeah, because I thou ht ma be U -- JD I never heard you were bein attacked-- No, no, also you know maybe I thought it's you who was sick of me and I thought maybe, you know, I thought maybe if you would care about me, you'd find a job, you would help me with visa, I thought you were aware of this issue, you know, I thought if you care about me, you would make my life more comfortable, um, um, so. 39:46 JD I thought you had just graduated from Columbia. You were looking for a job. I knew banking at Goldman would be tough, but I tried. Um, but one of the things, you don't have a lot of patience. Um, you have a wonderful-- many wonderful qualities (laughs), but patience isn't one of them. I mean people go for jobs. They get rejected all the time-- No, I know-- JD I mean I see it, I see it with my kids getting rejected. I see it with all of the their friends ettin_• re'ected ... No but 1-- 40:29 JD ...and therefore, when they get rejected, they pick up and try again, and try another place, and try another place. Job hunting is not the easiest thing. I tried to explain to you that banking, especially at Goldman, was hard, but that I wanted to try because there were some people I knew, but if not there, then were other places we could try, if you wanted finance. If you didn't want finance, then there was marketing positions. You could always do something, as I said, in art, in the art world, so to me, Goldman was...yeah, made for you, you go to bat, sometimes you strike out, then you go to bat and you hit a home run. 41: IS E For me, it was very confusing the way our relationship suddenly...you know, it was very confusing. Basically, I had a lot of feelings for you, but I felt like I could not express it, I could not expect anything because I expect you to take care of me but you're not my husband. It was tough. And you know, when you have Mort making fun of you, and telling you that you have to sleep with him otherwise he's going to fire you from his job and other people... JD I had nothing to do with Mort... E ...I know, I know...but it was tough, it was really tough. You know, the day I was leaving, someone put a German newspaper in front of my door, then the woman came knocking at my door, saying "sorry for your loss, can you please give me money?" It was insane. JD I don't understand. ■ I don't understand either. You know, I don't know why, I don't understand why someone would try to poison me, you know... JD I'm sorry if I didn't take that seriously. I thought you were being dramatic. I don't know why someone would try to poison you.... I mean, it was this, like, Lewis Tappinger or Taschinger, something like that, Alexander von Furstenberg made fun of me, basically everyone in the society was making fun of me. I don't know, maybe they're friends of your wife? JD These aren't friends of my wife. We're not friends with Alex von Furstenberg. --. I don't know, I don't know. 43:15 JD [laughs] These aren't people I mix with or she mixes with. [Pause] But I have never talked about you to anybody. I thought this was our private relationshi in that we cared about each other, I tried to be su ortive. Maybe people just knew I was a little bit paranoid so they wanted to make me feel uncomfortable. I don't know. [JD praises the bread] 44:06 I think when I was poisoned I wasn't right at the job interview, during the job interview. JD Which job interview? ■ The one guy who works in the finance company we met to talk about my possibilities for me to work because I stopped going out, I stopped going out because I didn't want these thing (U/I). Like even when I went for job interviews or to pick up my son, these things were happening, when people were making fun of me. JD You went out sometimes. You reminded me when you told me about Len, about the rabbi's sons, you mentioned that you met a nice guy who was a rabbi's son, or something like that. No? 44:50 I don't know anyone. Maybe people want to find out what kind of a relationship we had, maybe they make jokes to see how I'm going to react, but I am just sick and tired of it, you know? JD As far as I knew, Len or Mort knew nothing about you and I. Anyhow, I'm sorry you've gone through that. It wasn't my intent or even that said, why would I even, I care about you, supporting you, why would I want you to be badmouthed? And I enuinel didn't want ou to leave. Ok JD But what is it that you need to live off? la Huh? JD What is it that you need to live off? I mean, if you were to live in London, what is the cost there? [pause] What is the cost for to go to a good private school? 47:34 I How about this? You remember your last proposal? JD No... You said you want to help me with investor's visa, right? JD Yep. al How about instead of an investor's visa, we'll make a passport. JD Right... al ...Which is ten million. I don't want to have to worry about money ever again, that's what I want, in general. I don't want to worry about money ever again, that's it. JD To not worry about money, on a yearly basis, do you know what you need? Urn, I will easily spend a million JD [laughing] On what? Clothes, vacation? Schools, etc. And I think... JD ...And I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just trying to understand. 50:07 JD If you had the visa money, the passport money, where you have to invest ten million, then why would you need the extra million for investment? You're alread investin . Wouldn't that be du licative? You have a passport separately JD But it gets invested. You don't just buy the passport, you put it into British securities ■ Well, who knows what happens then? You're investing in British bonds that don't bring much. JD You know, it could be in bonds, it could be partly in bonds, it could be partly in stock. It could appreciate, it could go down... a It could go down...it could go up, but if it goes down, then I have to have money to top it up. If it goes down I have to keep the same level. 51:/1 JD I haven't studied this, but at the beginning of the summer I looked into a little bit and I don't remember it totally, but I remember that there were definite...ways of getting a visa: five years temporary with two million pounds invested in British securities, then... I Three years... JD Then you could do something else...three years with a two year renewal, if I remember... --. Yeah, if you maintain, or something... JD Then, there was something for five million and something for ten, but I forget what those were. You know. --. Probably ten. It's an expedited way of getting a passport — you invest five million dollars to get a passport in three years, and ten to get it in two. But what I think will be possible, from this ten, for less than half, you can buy a house, or a home. You don't have to put all of it in... JD You mean you can't do that with five? It has to be ten? I mean, I don't know. It's all news to me. I'm just curious. (coughs] You ok? JD Yeah...I always thought you had an abusive relationship from what you described with your ex. I don't want to be angry and upset, you know? JD Uh-huh. Your experience at Columbia. That was pretty straightforward, wasn't it? In terms of studies... Well, everything was great, they wanted me to get a PhD and then again, the news broke, they started treating me differently, the last semester, the last two semesters... JD You never told me that... -. I never told you? I remember we came to the museum here and we were looking at modals and this arts teacher, she was making jokes, she was being really harsh JD Who? An arts teacher. Arts class. I took art class. JD At MoMA? ■ At Columbia, I took art class and we came to (UK) and there were lilies, you know, who did them... JD The Monet? The Waterlilies. ■ And she says, "look at the lilies and tell me what you think about it?" And I said, "well, it's so, it's done in a way where I think I could do it." And the teacher says, "no, you can't" and everybody started laughing. JD [laughs] Ok. Well, now are you projecting, that's a little bit of paranoia! [both laugh] I don't know, no? JD My kids always tell me that about Mondrian. You know, it's just geometric verticals and horizontals..."I could do that!" [laughs]. Or Malevich, with the Black Circle... .. ...the Black Square is more... JD Or the Black Square...Um. I spend half and with the other half little by little... JD What happens when you lose that? I'm playing devil's advocate, just thinking it out with you. How do we both get — I mean, we both — you have need, I have needs... --. Yeah 01:02:07 JD ...How do I get a sense of comfort — and the worst thing by the way (UI) investing is that somebody feels, "Well heads I win, tails you lose." And what I mean by that is there has to be UI. And if you feel, Okay, I can go for that, it has a big upside, and then you lose the money because you feel you can come back and say you need more, that's an impossible position for me I think I — art of the mone I have to allow to invest b someone else JD How do I get a sense that you are secure and comfortable but that there's finality? And that — you're coming back a few years from now and saying, "Oh I reall wanted that UI but I lost the mone , I need more." I'm trying to listen to everything you're saying because I think that ou should be listened to. 01:04:43 Well I mean, I'm at the point where I don't live in New York, we don't see each other, so there should be some kind of separate arrangement. I mean, I mean, I can promise that you know if you agree to these terms I will not ask for more. Um, I think...How do I know that you will keep your words? You canpromise me ten billion dollars in ten ears - JD Right You know what I mean? How do I know that... 01:05:23 JD Well certainly the up-front — the up-front payment whatever it is if that's the way we go — Yeah, eah JD That you have. Okay. So that there's no question about and then the rest would have to be some type of a Trust. There could even be two meanings to the word "trust" Uh-huh JD One, you could mist me. And two we could set up some kind of a special Trust. Urn. I don't know, that's something lawyers can work — Yeah JD can work through so that you know you're still provided for if I get hit by a truck tomorrow Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think that's good. 01:06:02 JD Um. So. I mean, I think that can be probably worked through it may take a little time to get it right but I think that's important for you as part of your sense of securi . Urn. Mmhm JD But all I'm saying the security has to work both ways — Definitely, yeah, mmhm. And I'm sure I'll, if you allow me, I'll come back to you for advice JD Mmhm ■ On how to manage and take care of it better the next time. There's probably no one better than you. I do not feel comfortable, And I haven't said any numbers. I haven't said. Just general picture. I think it's dangerous for me to meet with you. It could be seen as a blackmail case. I don't know. I think it's still early I think we should probably, I think the best thing for you would be if we could work out some type of an arrangement. And when you bring somebody in to get a document or work through so you feel that you're not getting screwed and. Um. And — and — but I think the danger of having one too early is they try to grab on to, you know — 7 Yeah JD A significant piece, which makes no sense for you al I - I mean. I mean. Um. I trust you JD Mmhm ■ I hope you trust me too and I hope you trust me too that I'm serious. I don't want to squander it and then come back again JD Mmhm Urn. !just want to, you know. I also know it's within your — your capability, if you want to pull a trigger, you can be hurtful. Um. So, I don't think it takes anything away from you to — for us to take a little bit of time to work this out and — but I want to say in good faith. Urn. I mean, this could take a few months to work out to both our satisfaction. Um. I want to be totally honest with you. Urn. I think my sister's going to die in the next three or four weeks.
