KEY BLOCK----- By Brian Stelter and the CNNMoney Media team - [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) ** Disney's rare miss ------------------------------------------------------------ Are Disney's world-class TV properties -- particularly ESPN -- really a drag on the business right now? It's hard to believe, but yes, when the company's fiscal Q2 earnings came out today, (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/10/media/disney-second-quarter-earnings-espn-bob-iger/index.html?iid=Lead&mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) the"rare miss" (https://www.google.com/?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]#q=%22rare+miss%22+disney&safe=off&tbm=nws&tbs=sbd:1) was largely attributed to its cable networks division. $DIS fell more than 5% in after-hours trading. Broadcasting, parks and studio revenues were all up in Q1, but cable revenues were down 2%. Subscriber fee $$$ totals were up year-over-year, thanks to "contractual rate increases," but ESPN is continuing to lose (relatively small) numbers of subscribers due to cord-shaving and other pressures. Ad revenue also declined a bit. And/But... At the same time... Disney still posted double-digit growth in profit. And Bob Iger touted "our studio's unprecedented winning streak at the box office." Read Frank Pallotta's full report here... (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/10/media/disney-second-quarter-earnings-espn-bob-iger/index.html?iid=Lead&mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) Iger drops hints about new distributors How's ESPN going to stop the subscriber bleeding? This is a slow bleed, but it's still messy. Here's what Iger said on CNBC tonight: (https://twitter.com/CNBCFastMoney/status/730153452823666689?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "We're also in discussions with a number of entities — some current distributors that are coming forward with new packages, and some completely new distributors — all have expressed avid interest in having ESPN and our other channels included in their initial offerings. And we're very, very encouraged..." Iger's talking about Hulu... And YouTube... And maybe Apple and Amazon and a few others that are exploring cable-like streaming bundles... -- BTW: Today ESPN and Verizon settled that one-year-old lawsuit over bundling... (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/10/media/espn-verizon-settle/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) What Iger's not "currently" planning Brian Lowry writes: (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/10/media/disney-bob-iger-needs-heir/index.html?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "Having built Disney into a juggernaut, can CEO Robert Iger comfortably relinquish the keys to the Magic Kingdom?" During today's Q2 earnings call, Iger declined to elaborate about the recent, sudden, stunning exit of CEO-in-waiting Thomas Staggs. He said "I don't currently have any plans to extend beyond the current expiration date of June 2018" and that "the board is very actively engaged in a succession process, as it has been for some time..." -- Love this detail about Disney exceptionalism in Lowry's column (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/10/media/disney-bob-iger-needs-heir/index.html?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) : Execs "have long shared a rather unique experience: serving shifts as costumed characters in the studio's theme parks. The idea was to help top managers to gain insight into their customers and employees. (Those 6 feet or taller would often be outfitted as Goofy.)" Disney pulls the plug on "Infinity" Disney is getting out of game publishing. The sprawling sandbox game "Disney Infinity" is being discontinued. (http://www.disneyinteractive.com/blog/update-disney-infinity/?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) Here's the story as told in four Ben Fritz tweets: (https://twitter.com/benfritz?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "Disney cancels struggling Infinity video game line. Takes $147 million charge. End of Disney as video game publisher... Along with cancellation of 'Infinity,' Disney is closing Avalanche studio in Utah. Close to 300 jobs will be cut... Iger also says Infinity was a good product. 'I give the developers a lot of credit...' Disney has no problem making big investments when it believes in a business and no problem cutting losses promptly when things don't work." Fair treatment by Facebook? Republican Senator demands info Today's Facebook update: (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/10/technology/facebook-news-senate/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota, wants Mark Zuckerberg to explain exactly how Facebook chooses the news in its "trending" topics section.Among his requests: (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/10/technology/facebook-news-senate/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "Please provide a list of all news stories removed from or injected into the Trending Topics section since January 2014." Facebook is reviewing Thune's three-page letter... And says "we look forward to addressing his questions..." But it remains to be seen just how forthcoming the company will be. Floyd Abrams told (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/10/technology/facebook-news-senate/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) CNNMoney's Hope King: "The First Amendment leaves no room for Congress to investigate or otherwise insert itself into Facebook's editorial decision-making..." What about the "free market?" South Dakotan Tom Kludt emails: When our state gets name checked in national media, we get excited. I suspect Thune's letter is the first time many people in S.D. are hearing about the controversy. The state Democratic party seized on the letter, tweeting (https://twitter.com/SoDakDems/status/730082033347649536?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) , "John Thune is critical of facebook’s alleged liberal bias, two words for you John…'free market.'" It's kind of like the North Star for the paper. I was editor of The Sun from 2006–2007, and since Sunday my inbox has flooded with sad notes from former writers and editors at the news that the paper is reducing its print run to three days a week. We are, collectively, crushed. (Today the NYT wrote about the disappointing news. It even kept printing during the World Wars. I know The Sun will continue to be great – both its journalism and its digital presence (http://cornellsun.com/?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) -- and that sign in the newsroom will always be there, even if means something a little different... Road to 2016 Donald and Howard... Thanks to Donald Trump, Howard Stern has come up quite a bit during this campaign. The year of Carl Diggler Tom emails: If 2012 belonged to Nate Silver, then 2016 is the year of Carl Diggler. Oh, you’ve never heard of "The Dig"? That’s because he's not real, at least not in the same way as other political prognosticators. A sendup of Beltway punditry, "Diggler" has an ongoing column at Café.com written by a pair of (hilarious) Twitter personalities, Virgil Texas (@virgiltexas (http://twitter.com/virgiltexas?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) ) and Felix Biederman (@ByYourLogic (http://twitter.com/ByYourLogic?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) ). The parody eventually yielded real insight, as Diggler has called race after race correctly this year – including many for which Silver's 538 didn’t even bother to make a pick. Now The Dig is finally getting his due. MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki called the character the "breakout star of the 2016 cycle." Texas wrote about Diggler's unlikely emergence yesterday in the Washington Post, (https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/05/09/our-fictional-pundit-predicted-more-correct-primary-results-than-nate-silver-did/?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID] ) a piece that was quite critical of Silver. And today Café unveiled a new home (http://www.cafe.com/sixthirtyeight/?mc_cid=55b6ac0c7d&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) for Diggler’s wonkery: SixThirtyEight.com. The made-for-TV movie was supposed to be based on my 2013 book "Top of the Morning." When Lifetime bought the rights and commissioned a script by Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky, there was some chatter about who might play Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, etc. But Lifetime let its option lapse a while ago...
