Subject: Relief Effort #2: Far Rockaway
Hello All,
If you look at the photos attached you will see Far Rockaway was =it very hard by the hurricane and its residents
are still without power =nd living day to day with out the basics we take for granted. Since New =ork is OUR city we have
to keep up with the need for help until we =ecover. We loaded up the bus graciously donated by the LFNY with twenty
=onderful volunteers from all over the city and headed to the Mount =armel Baptist Church
The Bergen Beach Community Center has their eyes and ears on the =round in Brooklyn, Coney Island and Far
Rockaway and as such, is able =o consistently help us get our groups, supplies and food into the right =ands. They
introduced us to the team at the church yesterday and we =ere able to get hot meals to over 150 people throughout the
course of =he afternoon. Amazingly, with our very limited "kitchen" (four charcoal =rills and two gas burners) and the
excellent team of volunteers, we =ere able to not only offer a hot BBQ chicken dinner to the residents =ut to extend one
hot meal into two by offering thermoses of =
of soup and wrapped hot =andwiches as well. As the afternoon wound down and our team prepared to =epart,
we donated the kitchen set up to the church and no sooner did we =lean up than another team of volunteers came and
took over the grills =o heat up another round of meals for the evening. Hazarding a guess, =hose grills will be working
overtime in the next few weeks.
The =esidents were so happy to know they were not forgotten and the event =as a great success. Our hope is to
be able to consistently help through =he coming weeks. With Thanksgiving and Christmas and more importantly, =old
weather, coming we are fine tuning our approach so that we can =ontinue to provide hot meals to the people in these
hard hit areas of =ur city that are still without the basic comforts of =ome.
Thank you so much to everyone who donated their time, =upplies, effort, money and good energy. As we learn
with each =nitiative: it is truly a collaboration to make a =ifference.
Watch your email for the next =ffort!
Our committed =eam trying to keep the hot meal hot!
