In a word: organizing. Field organizing, commonly referred to as "the ground game," is the most overlooked aspect of political campaigns. But in the age of Citizens United, on-the-ground organizing is the biggest advantage Democrats have. President Obama's ground game left John McCain and Mitt Romney in the dust. And now, we're seeing presidential candidates like Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton pour resources into building massive field operations of their own. Our plan is to launch robust field campaigns in many of the tightest races across the country. By taking advantage of nationwide grassroots support, we can build the kind of targeted, local campaigns that previously only Presidential campaigns have been able to afford. Furthermore, research has shown that one-on-one conversations, as opposed to mail and television ads, are immensely effective. A study by two professors at Yale University found that a well-trained organizer having just one face-to-face conversation with a voter boosts the likelihood of the voter going to the polls by 20%.[2] Put simply, one-on-one conversations are the game-changer that can help Democrats retake the Majority in 2016. Will this really make a difference? YES -- we wouldn't be doing this if we weren't confident that our data-driven approach can impact elections. Experts agree that turnout efforts can swing an election by as much as five points. As a frame of reference, in the past two elections, 61 Congressional races were won by 5% or less. Michele Bachmann (ugh), for example, won by just over 1% in 2012. A robust Democratic ground game can be the difference between two more years of Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan setting the agenda or a Democratic Majority ready to work with the next Democratic President of the United States. The electoral math shows that taking back the majority will require us winning races projected to be purple or Republican-leaning.
