With their assistance, we have a tentative plan to redesign the current environment, upgrade the software installed on our servers, and build out a virtualized environment on new hardware. This is similar to the original plan Dave had pursued; however, we will be taking advantage of Citrix's free virtualization platform rather than using VMWare's product which resulted in a substantial cost savings over the original design cost. We have built in redundancy by deploying hardware at both 71st street and here at 301 E 66th Street. In this way, a single failure should not prevent users from accessing key applications assuming connectivity to the other location remains. The first page in the attached document highlights the key changes in a bit more detail. There are two pages following that outline a number of existing user issues and how they will be resolved in the new infrastructure. This is followed by two estimates. One is for the price of the installation, configuration and hardware. The second price is the cost to renew eligibility for Citrix Upgrades for another 24-months. This upgrade option is expiring at the end of June and will be required if we wish to be able to upgrade to the most recent version of Citrix. Software vendors sell these agreement packages to defray the one-time cost of licensing and software upgrades that often amounts to tens of thousands; so long as you have a current software agreement, you don't have to pay these exorbitant one-time fees. Towards migrating all users to a Mac Desktop, this project would get us closer to that end by providing a secure web-interface for all applications. The web interface is accessible through a web browser on either a Mac, Windows or Linux client. Also, I intended to migrate all the QuickBooks data to these redundant servers. This application represents a consistent roadblock in migrating all users to Mac hardware as the enterprise version does not run on Mac Clients. The high-availability design should ease user concern that an outage at 71St street will disable users in STT from accessing QuickBooks since they could then use the published applications on the redundant Citrix server. Please let me know if you have any questions about this or if I am missing any key goals regarding the direction of the IT infrastructure here. Hope all is well.
