In Split Role, McCain Adviser Is Sometimes a Lobbyist (NYT 8/14/08)
By MICHAEL COOPER
When Senator John McCain led a Senate investigation three years ago of Jack
Abramoff, the disgraced lobbyist who later pleaded guilty to fraud charges,
Mr. Abramoff's old firm turned to a former McCain campaign adviser for
help. The firm, Greenberg Traurig, which had quickly cut its ties to Mr.
Abramoff, hired Randy Scheunemann, who had been the McCain campaign's
foreign policy adviser in 2000 — and is again this year — for advice on
handling the Senate investigation.

Did Scheunemann Engineer McCain's 2005 Nobel Prize Nomination Of Georgian
President For Financial Gain? (ThinkProgress 8/13/08)
...there appears to be more evidence of Scheunemann using McCain for
financial gain. In 2005, operating as Georgia's lobbyist, Scheunemann may
have engineered McCain's nomination of Georgian President Mikheil
Saakashvili's for the Nobel Peace Prize just before his contract with the
Georgian government was due to expire.

McCain: 'In the 21st century, nations don't invade other nations.' (Think
Progress 8/13/08)
In recent days, Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) rhetoric toward Russia has mostly
been overblown bluster, including an accusation that the country wanted to
restore its old empire. However, since a cease-fire was announced and his
predictions were proven wrong, McCain has backtracked, saying there won't be
a Cold War. To justify his new position, he told reporters in a press
conference today:

Social Security Too Hot to Touch? Not in 2008 (NYT 8/14/08)
By LARRY ROHTER
Ignoring the warnings that Social Security can derail political careers,
Senator John McCain has infuriated his party's right wing by saying that
"everything has to be on the table" in discussions about keeping Social
Security solvent. Mr. McCain, the presumed Republican presidential nominee,
does indeed seem to have put everything on the table. In the space of one
week, he opened the door to an increase in Social Security taxes, denied he
would raise payroll taxes and then, through an ally, called a tax increase a
"dumb idea." He has also sowed confusion about whether he favors privatizing
Social Security, or continuing with the current system.

Ralph Reed's link to McCain brews storm of criticism (Atlanta
Journal-Constitution 8/14/08)
By AARON GOULD SHEININ
Ralph Reed's involvement in an upcoming Atlanta fund-raiser for John McCain
has the presidential candidate fending off an onslaught of criticism from
Democrats. Reed, the former head of the Christian Coalition, was tied to the
corruption scandal involving Jack Abramoff, the highly paid Washington
lobbyist now serving a six-year prison term. Much of the Abramoff scandal
was exposed by an investigation led by McCain when he chaired the Senate
Committee on Indian Affairs.

Another GOP senator to skip convo (FirstRead 8/13/08)

Sen. Pat Roberts (KS) is now the eighth Republican senator to announce that
they will not attend the GOP Convention in St. Paul, Minn., next

Roberts will be campaigning that week, finishing up his 105 county statewide
tour during the convention week. Four others who've announced they won't be
attending are -- Ted Stevens (AK), Elizabeth Dole (NC), Gordon Smith (OR),
and Susan Collins (ME). All are running for re-election and are in close
races. (Collins may have the easiest race, but she's never been a close ally
of McCain.)

We Are All Georgians (WSJ 8/14/08)
By JOHN MCCAIN; Page A13
For anyone who thought that stark international aggression was a thing of
the past, the last week must have come as a startling wake-up call. After
clashes in the Georgian region of South Ossetia, Russia invaded its
neighbor, launching attacks that threaten its very existence. Some Americans
may wonder why events in this part of the world are any concern of ours.
After all, Georgia is a small, remote and obscure place. But history is
often made in remote, obscure places.

Russia's War Is The West's Challenge (Washington Post 8/14/08)
By Mikheil Saakashvili; A17
Russia's invasion of Georgia strikes at the heart of Western values and our
21st-century system of security. If the international community allows
Russia to crush our democratic, independent state, it will be giving carte
blanche to authoritarian governments everywhere. Russia intends to destroy
not just a country but an idea.

The Wrong Force for the 'Right War' (NYT 8/14/08)
By BARTLE BREESE BULL
BARACK OBAMA and John McCain have plenty of disagreements, but one thing
they are united on is promising a troop surge in Afghanistan. Senator McCain
wants to move troops to Afghanistan from the Middle East, conditional on
continued progress in Iraq. Senator Obama goes much further, arguing that we
should have sent last year's surge to Afghanistan, not Iraq, that
Afghanistan is the "central front" and that we must rebuild Afghanistan from
the bottom up along the lines of the Marshall Plan.

Why Can't Candidates Be Celebrities? (TIME 8/14/08)
By MICHAEL GRUNWALD
John McCain's campaign has been working overtime to ridicule Barack Obama as
The One, the rock-star celebrity with adoring fans, the politician with the
chutzpah to announce his candidacy in a speech about Abraham Lincoln. So it
was a bit surprising to watch the opening of McCain's town hall meeting in
York, Pa., on Tuesday. ...What's not such a good thing is the way campaign
culture tries to slap down candidates who don't seem to fit someone's
definition of "ordinary Americans." One would think the presidency would
require a rather extraordinary American, but modern candidates are
apparently supposed to pretend to be just like us.

our economy and restore the balance that has been lost in recent years, we
hear the familiar protests and distortions from the guardians of the broken
status quo.

New Books Aim To Unweave the Obama Narrative (Washington Post 8/14/08)
By Eli Saslow; A01
In two autobiographies and dozens of speeches, Barack Obama has weaved the
narrative that defines his campaign: An introspective boy gradually comes to
terms with his mixed-race heritage and emerges with an "unprejudiced"
worldview. He enters politics because of his "love of country" and succeeds
by staying faithful to his morals and "transcending the partisan divide."

Kerry vs. Corsi (Politico blog 8/13/08)
By Ben Smith
John Kerry is launching a website, Truth Fights Back, to defend Obama and
other Democratic candidates against attacks. The site, paid for by his
leadership PAC, goes after the "80 lies" in a new book by Jerome Corsi,
whose 2004 attack on Kerry's military record helped sink the Democrat's
campaign, but whose Obama book seems likely to remain on the margins this
year.

Obama Ad: McCain's Economics 'Book' (NYT blog 8/13/08)

from Senator Barack Obama's campaign, begins with a picture of his opponent,
Senator John McCain, on the mocked-up cover of a book entitled "Economics."
